Two-Time World Series Winner Alex Bregman Becomes Winning Racehorse Owner At Churchill

Two-time World Series-winning third basemen Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros became a winning horse owner Wednesday at Churchill Downs when his family's 2-year-old filly Goldblooded was victorious in her third-career start.

Bregman was in attendance with his wife, Reagan, their three-month-old son, Knox, and several other family members for the victory.

“We've been at this for about a year and it's the first time we've been able to watch one of our horses in person,” Bregman said. “We got in town about 45 minutes before the race and got over here just in time to check out Goldblooded in the paddock. Then, we got to watch the race with (trainer) Rusty (Arnold), my wife, son and in-laws.

“This is surreal to watch (Goldblooded) go on to win like that. In the World Series with two outs in the ninth inning you're not as nervous as this. Being a player is just sort of what you do. Here you're watching your horse run, freaking out, sweating and hearts beating. This is what it's all about. This is my first time here at Churchill and it's unbelievable.”

Goldblooded officially tallied a 3 ½-length victory with jockey Martin Garcia in the irons in the maiden $150,000 claiming event. Goldblooded earned $40,980 for her victory and awarded bettors with an $8.74 return. This was Goldblooded's first start on the dirt. In her previous two starts the Goldencents filly finished eighth and third on the turf at Kentucky Downs and Horseshoe Indianapolis, respectively.

It's been a good four weeks for Bregman after helping the Astros win their second World Series in the last six years. The 28-year-old is signed with the Astros through 2024.

“That's always the hope to make to the World Series,” Bregman joked. “We've got a good group of guys to try and get back there.”

Will Take Charge To Darley Japan

Champion Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song–Take Charge Lady, by Dehere), whose 13 black-type winners includes this year's GI Hollywood Gold Cup hero There Goes Harvard, will join the stallion roster at Darley Japan in 2023, according to a post on the nursery's website. Will Take Charge has stood his first eight seasons at stud at Three Chimneys Farm.

Campaigned by the late Willis Horton during his first two seasons at the races and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Will Take Charge won the 2013 GI Travers S. and GII Pennsylvania Derby before dropping a heartbreaking decision in that year's GI Breeders' Cup Classic. A defeat of his elders in the GI Clark H. secured him the Eclipse Award for champion 3-year-old male. With Three Chimneys joining in as part-owner for his 4-year-old season, the blaze-faced chestnut won the GII Oaklawn H. at Horton's home track and was placed in the GI Stephen Foster H. and GI Whitney S. prior to his retirement to stud.

Overall, Will Take Charge is the sire of 224 winners from five crops to race and a dozen stakes winners in addition to There Goes Harvard, including this year's GII Phoenix S. upsetter Manny Wah and Grade III winners Will's Secret and Abaan. His four Japanese winners from five to race includes France Go de Ina, who participated in the 2021 GI Preakness S. and GI Belmont S.

Will Take Charge is out of the gifted MGISW Take Charge Lady, making him a half-brother to WinStar stallion Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy); GISW As Time Goes By (American Pharoah); and to Charming (Seeking the Gold), the dam of promising young Spendthrift sire Omaha Beach (War Front) and Horton's Eclipse Award winner Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway). This is also the family of GISP 'TDN Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit) and of Japanese MSW Strong Souther (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), a son of Take Charge Lady's MSW/GSP half-sister Eventail (Lear Fan).

“We are delighted to be able to introduce this horse at a time when he has produced a Grade I winner in the U.S. and has further enhanced his reputation in Japan,” said Darley Japan CEO Harry Sweeney. “We are confident he will be a success in Japan.”

Canterbury Park Applies For 54 Race Dates In 2023

Canterbury Park racing officials have submitted a request to the Minnesota Racing Commission for a 54-day mixed-breed horse racing season in 2023. The proposed meet would begin Saturday, May 27, and conclude Saturday, Sept. 16.

Four days of racing per week would be conducted from July 12 through Aug. 20 with racing on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. central and Sunday at 1 p.m. Three-day weeks would begin and end the season with Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday racing. Racing will also be conducted on three Mondays: Memorial Day, July 3 and Labor Day.

The 2023 schedule was submitted with the consent of the Minnesota Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association which represents the interests of horse owners and trainers participating in thoroughbred racing in the state. Daily purse distribution is expected to average $200,000.

The May 27 opening date is later than customary to allow additional construction time for the redevelopment and improvements underway in the horse stabling area. Construction of a 100-stall barn will begin this month while nine barns are scheduled for demolition as the result of a land sale making way for an outdoor amphitheater.

Other projects currently in progress include a reconfiguring of the training track, repositioning of the main track entrance gap for morning training, conversion of the receiving barn to a 70-stall stabling area, construction of a 34-room dormitory, a relocated stable gate entrance and complete replacement of main track and paddock lighting.

The first condition book along with the 2023 stakes schedule will be released in early January. Stall applications will be available in March and are due at the beginning of April. The stable area is expected to be open for arrivals May 5, 2023.

The Minnesota Racing Commission, a nine-member panel appointed by the state's governor tasked with overseeing the integrity and safety of horse racing at Minnesota's two pari-mutuel racetracks, is expected to consider Canterbury's race date request at its December meeting. Minnesota Administrative Rule 7872.0100 requires Canterbury Park to submit its request for 2023 racing dates no later than November 15.

Canterbury Park's 24/7 card casino and simulcast racebook remain open daily. For more information, visit www.canterburypark.com .
