Wicked Halo Caps Keeneland Stakes Double For Winchell Thoroughbreds, Sire Gun Runner In Raven Run

Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred Wicked Halo swept to the front at the top of the stretch and breezed to a four-length victory in the 24th running of the $350,000 Lexus Raven Run (G2) for 3-year-old fillies Saturday at Keeneland.

About 90 minutes earlier, Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred Gunite cruised to a 3 3/4-length victory in the 14th running of the $250,000 Perryville, a listed stakes for 3-year-olds.

Steve Asmussen trains both runners, and Tyler Gaffalione rode both winners.

The Raven Run victory was the third of the afternoon for Asmussen and gave Gaffalione a second Raven Run victory to go with the 2018 triumph on Shamrock Rose.

In this year's edition of the Raven Run, Smash Ticket and Freedom Speaks led the field of nine through fractions of :22.73 and :46.09 with Wicked Halo racing in the three path just off the flank of Freedom Speaks.

Midway on the far turn, Wicked Halo drew on even terms with the leaders. By the time the field reached the top of the stretch, she had a clear advantage and raced to the finish under no pressure.

Wicked Halo completed the seven furlongs on the fast main track in 1:24.30 to notch her third graded stakes victory and fifth overall. She could start next in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) in two weeks at Keeneland.

A Kentucky-bred daughter of Gun Runner out of the Tapit mare Just Wicked, Wicked Halo improved her record to 6-0-3 from 10 career starts in winning her fourth consecutive start. Saturday's victory was worth $206,150 and increased her earnings to $780,200.

Wicked Halo returned $7.04 as the favorite in the field of nine. Fingal's Cave rallied for second under Joel Rosario and finished a neck in front of Midnight Stroll.

It was another 3¾ lengths back to Freedom Speaks, who was followed in order by Last Leaf, Smash Ticket, Colorful Mischief, Republique and Union Lake.

Lexus Raven Run (G2) Quotes

Steve Asmussen (winning trainer of Wicked Halo and Perryville victor Gunite; both are 3-year-olds by Gun Runner): “(Winning the two stakes is) extremely special. Their level of ability is obvious, but the fact that they thrive with racing and have continued to get better is so rare. I think she (Wicked Halo) and Gunite are very similar in the fact that they've just accepted their job and continuously gotten faster. Obviously, they're very sound horses – great homebreds for Winchell (Thoroughbreds). I'm very fortunate to have them.”

On whether the Breeders' Cup also is on the table for Wicked Halo: “Yes.”

Tyler Gaffalione (winning rider):

On the similarity of Wicked Halo's race to Gaffalione's earlier win in the Perryville on Gunite: “Definitely seemed that way. She did everything very easily. I'm just so thankful I was able to get the opportunity to steer them around there. It was a lot of fun today.”

Joel Rosario (rider of runner-up Fingal's Cave): “She broke fine. Right away I got pinched a little bit, so I had to take hold. I thought we were going to be a little more in the race (from the beginning). She did well after that. She came running at the end, so that was good. We were just second best.”

Luis Saez (rider of third-place finisher Midnight Stroll): “She tried. She ran her race. The winner is a tough filly. I thought she (Midnight Stroll) was going to hold on for second, but she got pretty tired.”

‘Maryland’s Day At The Races’: Ournationonparade Wins Maryland Million Classic, Wicked Prankster Goes Gate To Wire In Turf

Happy Go Lucky Stable Inc.'s Ournationonparade, racing first time for his new connections, paid immediate dividends with a popular and decisive 5 ¾-length triumph in Saturday's $150,000 Maryland Million Classic at Laurel Park.

The 1 1/8-mile Classic for 3-year-olds and up headlined the 37th Jim McKay Maryland Million Day program of 12 races featuring eight stakes on 'Maryland's Day at the Races,' celebrating the progeny of stallions standing in the state.

It was the second win of day for trainer Jamie Ness and jockey Jaime Rodriguez, who also teamed up in the $100,000 Lassie with 2-year-old filly Chickieness, bred and co-owned by Ness' Jagger Inc. It was also the second Maryland Million win for Ournationonparade, coming three years after his victory in the 2019 Nursery.

Ournationonparade ($6) was sent off as the 2-1 favorite in a field of 11 that included the past two Classic winners, Prendimi and Monday Morning Qb along with multiple stakes winners Double Crown and Tappin Cat.

Bred in Maryland by John Williamson III, Ournationonparade is a 5-year-old Cal Nation gelding out of the mare Parade of Colors, who Ness also trained.

“She was slow. She really was,” Ness said. “He approached me and said, 'What about that old mare? When you're done racing her, can I have her?' He said, 'I don't know what it is about her, but I just like her.' She's produced winner after winner after winner. Good for him. He was pretty choked up after the race, and that made me a little choked up.”

As he did in his front-running 2020 triumph, Monday Morning Qb took the initiative from outermost Post 11 and was in front after a quarter-mile in :24.65 and a half in :49.74, chased by Prendimi and Vance Scholars, winner of an off-the-turf Bald Eagle Derby Aug. 6 at Laurel.

Rodriguez had Ournationonparade settled in fifth with an eye on Predimi who, like Monday Morning Qb, was trying to become just the sixth multiple winner of the Classic and first since Admirals War Chest in 2015-16.

“He kind of broke a little bit slow out of the gate and when I saw the outside horse go so wide, I just let him go and I just sat off the pace. When [Prendimi] moved I just sat right behind him and every time he moved I just moved with him,” Rodriguez said. “When I got to the half-mile pole, I was loaded.

“By the time I got to the quarter pole, he just exploded. I didn't even ask him. I'm just sitting on him and he was cruising on,” he added. “When he changed leads he gave me another gear. Thank God everything came out good and we got it done today.”

Ournationonparade ranged up on Prendimi midway around the turn, matching strides approaching the stretch and surging past once straightened for home, going a mile in 1:38.71 and continuing to gain separation to the wire, finishing up in 1:51.78 over a fast main track. Vance Scholars came on to be second, a half-length ahead of The Poser, with Double Crown another head back in fourth.

Monday Morning Qb, Prendimi, Crouchelli, Ain't Da Beer Cold, Tappin Cat, Virginia Fulla and Torch of Truth completed the order of finish.

Ness claimed Ournationonparade for $50,000 out of a Sept. 28 win at Churchill Downs sprinting seven furlongs. He had never been 1 1/8 miles before but did win a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer by 9 ¾ lengths Aug. 2 at Horseshoe Indiana one start before he was claimed.

“It looked like the distance was no problem. That was the only thing I was worried about,” Ness said. “I didn't really know the horse that well. I've only had him a short period of time, so I just tried to keep what the previous trainer was doing and that's what we did.

“I think he's just a good horse. He's just a little bit better than these horses, and he proved it today,” he added. “I didn't do a lot with him since I claimed him. He had a nice, easy work at Parx where I am most of the time and he looked like he was much the best today.”

Ournationonparade extended his win streak to four races and now owns eight wins from 25 starts, the victory pushing him over the $300,000 mark in purse earnings.

“We'll probably leave him here. I don't think there's a lot of Maryland-bred races left, but he looks like a horse that could compete in open company,” Ness said. “We'll probably point for some open company stakes races and go from there.”

Johnyz From Albany Rolls To Victory In Nursery

Charles J. 'Chip' Reed's homebred Johnyz From Albany, out of a two-time Maryland Million winner, lived up to the family tradition by jumping out to an early lead and rolling to a front-running, five-length triumph in the 100,000 Nursery for 2-year-old fillies.

Johnyz From Albany ($10.20) is by Blofeld out of the Oratory mare Monster Sleeping, winner of the 2013 and 2015 Maryland Million Lassie going long on the grass.

Ridden by Jorge Ruiz, who won the 2020 Nursery with Capuano-trained Kenny Had a Notion, Johnyz From Albany exited sharply from Post 7 in a field of 11, quickly established command, and was never headed.

Time was 1:11.35 on a fast track.

Heldish finished second, 1 ½ lengths head of Wildhunch, who edged Bestsugardaddyever by a neck for third.

Chickieness Is Best In Lassie

Chickieness, the 4-5 favorite, drove past Skylar's Sister and Bosserati inside the final sixteenth to win the $100,000 Lassie, covering six furlongs in 1:12.58 under jockey Jaime Rodriguez.

A 2-year-old daughter of Blofeld, co-owned by breeder Jagger Inc. and Morris Kernan, and trained by Jamie Ness, Chickieness won by 1 ½ lengths over Skylar's Sister. It was three-quarters of a length back to Bosserati.

Chickieness retured $3.80.

Sky's Not Falling Takes Turf Sprint

Larry Johnson and RDM Racing Stable's Sky's Not Falling, making just his second start of the year, raced near the lead approaching the stretch before taking over the top spot and holding off Rock the Boat through the lane for a half-length victory in the $100,000 Maryland Million Turf Sprint.

Ridden by Paco Lopez, the 5-year-old Seville gelding won by a half length and finished 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:02.75 on firm turf. He returned $9.40

Coconut Cake Captures Ladies

Coconut Cake, nearly two years since she last visited the winner's circle, held off a game Double Fireball to win the $125,000 Maryland Million Ladies by a head. It was three-quarters of a length to Amplio Esquema in third.

Sheldon Russell piloted Coconut Cake, a 5-year-old Bandbox mare, across the finish line in 1:50.22 for the 1 1/8 miles on firm turf. Owned by N R S Stable, James Chambers, and Timothy L. Keefe, she paid $4.40.

Wicked Prankster Wins Turf

Samuel G. Davis' Wicked Prankster, who raced six days earlier after coming off a three-month layoff, led gate-to-wire to win the $125,000 Turf over Street Copper.

A 4-year-old gelding by Mosler, Wicked Prankster covered the firm 1 1/8-mile course in 1:49.44 under jockey Richard Monterrey and returned $11.80.

Wicked Prankster previously won at a mile on a good turf course Oct. 16 at Laurel after having last raced in July.

He set fractions of :23.42, :48.28, and 1:11.91 Saturday while being pressed a bit down the backstretch and around the turn by Nick Papagiorgio and then Crabs N Beer.

“I figured a week would not hurt him [between races],” Davis said. “Instead of breezing him last week we would run him and just get ready for this race.”

Fille D'Esprit Rallies For Distaff Victory

It didn't start out the way they planned, but CJI Phoenix Thoroughbreds and No Guts No Glory Farm's Fille d'Esprit, by Great Notion, made sure the $100,000 Maryland Million Distaff ended exactly the way they hoped.

Fille d'Esprit ($5.40) became a Maryland Million winner for the first time in the 11th start of her 6-year-old season with a 1 ¼-length triumph over fellow multiple stakes winner Malibu Beauty in the seven-furlong sprint for fillies and mares.

Under jockey Xavier Perez, Fille d'Esprit covered the distance in 1:25.05 over a fast main track to give trainer Jerry Robb his ninth career Maryland Million win and second in the Distaff following Anna's Bandit in 2019, also with Perez.

Malibu Beauty stayed up for second, a length ahead of Sweet Gracie with Bourbon Wildcat another 2 ½ lengths back in fourth.

Fortheluvofbourbon Wins Sprint

Smart Angle LLP's Fortheluvofbourbon, off at 1-2, moved three-wide entering the stretch under jockey Paco Lopez and drove to victory in the $125,000 Sprint.

A 5-year-old gelded son of Bourbon Courage, Fortheluvofbourbon ($3) covered the six furlongs in 1:10.96 and beat Karan's Notion by 1 ½ lengths. It was a neck back to Alwaysinahurry in third.

Gun Runner’s Wicked Halo Streaks to Raven Run Win

Sent off the lukewarm 5-2 choice, Winchell Thoroughbred's Wicked Halo (Gun Runner) made that price seem like a gift after rolling home an emphatic four-length winner in Saturday's GII Lexus Raven Run S. at Keeneland. Settled in third, Wicked Halo waited as Smash Ticket (Midnight Lute) sprinted to the front and carved out an opening quarter in :22.73 while Freedom Speaks (American Freedom) pressed the issue. Three wide and ready to pounce at any moment following a half in :46.09, Wicked Halo collared the front-running duo while fanned out several paths wide turning for home, bounded clear through the stretch as the early leaders faded and proved much the best while scampering home comfortably ahead of SW Fingal's Cave (Carpe Diem), who closed from well off the pace to edge Midnight Stroll (Not This Time) for the runner-up spot. The victory represented the second stakes win on the card for Winchell, Asmussen and Gun Runner following Gunite's score in the Perryville S.

“It's extremely special,” said Asmussen. “Their level of ability is obvious, but the fact that they thrive with racing and have continued to get better is so rare. I think they are very similar in the fact that they've just accepted their job and continuously gotten faster. Obviously, they're very sound horses–great homebreds for Winchell. I'm very fortunate to have them.”

Showing her talent right out of the box, Wicked Halo went wire-to-wire in her career bow at Lone Star and added a victory in the GII Adirondack S. at the Spa later that summer. Sidelined for the rest of her juvenile season after that, she needed a few starts to get going, finishing third in two of three starts in the first part of 2022 before kicking off a three-race win skein in Churchill's Leslie's Lady S. In June. Stretching to a mile for the Tepin S. July 2, the grey handled that with aplomb and duly followed up with a narrow victory in Saratoga's six-furlong GII Prioress S. Sept. 2.
“She did everything very easily,” added winning rider Tyler Gaffalione, who was also aboard for Gunite's win earlier in the day. “I'm just so thankful I was able to get the opportunity to steer them around there. It was a lot of fun today.”

Pedigree Notes:
Wicked Halo's dam, Just Wicked, also showed early precocity to win the 2015 renewal of the Adirondack. Following Wicked Halo, the half-sister to GSW My Miss Lilly (Tapit) produced a pair of Gun Runners, a colt in 2020 and a filly last term. She was bred back to the hot sire for 2023.

‘I Think We’ve Learned A Little More About Him Now’: Celestial City Unleashes Explosive Rally To Win Hill Prince

Stuart S. Janney III's Kentucky homebred Celestial City tallied his first stakes triumph with a powerful stretch run to capture Saturday's $300,000 Hill Prince (G2), a nine-furlong inner turf test for sophomores at the Belmont at the Big A fall meet.

Trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey and piloted by Jose Lezcano, the Uncle Mo bay hit the board in both his previous graded attempts this summer at Saratoga Race Course, finishing third in the one-mile Grade 2 Hall of Fame in August and dead-heating for second in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 3 Saranac in September.

Celestial City stumbled at the start from the inside post and saved ground at the back of the nine-horse field as longshot Nantasket Beach set early fractions of :24.23 seconds and :49.83 over the firm going with Grade 1-placed Mackinnon pressing from second position in front of Constitutionlawyer and Grand Sonata.

Nantasket Beach continued to lead the way into the final turn with MacKinnon ready to pounce and Be Better edging closer to the outside of Constitutionlawyer through three-quarters in 1:15.26.

The Flavien Prat-piloted Mackinnon took over at the stretch call but Celestial City, full of run, rallied to the inside of Constitutionlawyer before angling outside and vaulting past Mackinnon to secure a 2 1/4-length win in a final time of 1:50.27.

Mackinnon completed the exacta by a head over an outside-charging Grand Sonata, who nosed out the rail-rallying Wicked Fast. Constitutionlawyer, St Anthony, Nantasket Beach, the McGaughey-trained Limited Liability, Be Better and Unanimous Consent rounded out the order of finish.

McGaughey said Celestial City improved with the addition of blinkers for the Saranac when completing the exacta behind Annapolis, who exited that event to capture the Grade 1 Turf Mile at Keeneland.

“This horse's races have been good. He's run against some pretty tough competition. I think he's learning now and I think we've learned a little something today with him not breaking well,” McGaughey said. “He got farther back than I thought he would, but he made a pretty explosive run so maybe that's what he wants to do. That's a little bit my style, but the way the turf courses have been playing, a lot of the time you got to be playing up close.

“His race when he dead-heated at Saratoga against Annapolis–a pretty darn good horse–[was good],” added McGaughey. “I'm pleased with him, he's trained well. His last race was a good race and I think we've learned a little more about him now.”

Celestial City entered the Hill Prince from a sharp allowance score against older company on September 24 at the Belmont at the Big A fall meet with Lezcano at the helm for just the second time.

“He didn't break the way I wanted, but at least it worked out in our favor,” Lezcano said. “After that, I had to go with the second plan and let him make one run. When I started asking him, he gave me everything he has. He's improving mentally more than anything.”

Prat said he thought he was in a winning position turning for home.

“I broke well and felt like there was no pace in the race, so I was trying to get myself as close as I could without rushing him,” Prat said. “He really gave me a great turn of foot when I asked him to run and just got outrun. To be honest, turning for home, I thought I was gone.”

McGaughey said Celestial City could possibly target the $400,000 Hollywood Derby (G1) on December 3 at Del Mar.

“I'm not ready to stop as long as he's saying 'Go,'” McGaughey said. “I hadn't thought about his future, but I'll give it some thought now after seeing him run today.”

Bred in Kentucky by his owner, Celestial City banked $165,000 in victory, while improving his record to 9-3-2-2. Celestial City is out of the Malibu Moon mare Lunar Evening, who is a half sister to the McGaughey-trained Grade 1 winner Hymn Book. He returned $9.60 for a $2 win bet.
