Plainsman Retired To Buck Pond Farm For 2023

Plainsman, a multiple Grade 3-winning son of Flatter, will retire to Buck Pond Farm in Lexington, Ky., for the 2023 breeding season, where he will stand for an advertised fee of $5,000.

The 7-year-old retires with nine wins in 32 starts, and earnings of $1,408,412, for trainer Brad Cox and owner Shortleaf Stable.

Plainsman got his first taste of graded stakes success as a 3-year-old when he won the Grade 3 Discovery Stakes at Aqueduct in wire-to-wire fashion.

His best season came in 2021, when he tallied victories in the Jim Rasmussen Stakes at Prairie Meadows and the listed Michael G. Schaefer Memorial Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis, before splitting foes to win the G3 Ack Ack Stakes at Churchill Downs. He then finished the season with a third-place effort in the G1 Cigar Mile Handicap.

Plainsman was among the top horses in Oaklawn Park's handicap division earlier this year, winning the G3 Razorback Handicap and finishing in the money in the G3 Essex Handicap and G2 Oaklawn Handicap.

Bred in Kentucky by Joseph Minor, Plainsman is out of the winning Street Sense mare S S Pinafore. He was a $350,000 purchase at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Plainsman will be available for inspection at Buck Pond Farm beginning Saturday, Oct. 29.

Golden Pal To Stand At Ashford Stud After Breeders’ Cup

Wesley Ward's speedball Golden Pal is set to retire to Coolmore America's Ashford Stud following his final start in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland on Nov. 5, where he bids to make it three straight Breeders' Cup successes.

Unbeaten in the U.S. since breaking his maiden in the Skidmore Stakes at Saratoga, the son of Uncle Mo has since won seven graded stakes over five and 5½ furlongs including last year's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar, which he took in breathtaking fashion, along with the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland the previous November.

“This is the fastest of the fast,” exclaimed Wesley Ward after the colt's spectacular tour-de-force in the Grade 2 Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland in April. Ward has long maintained that Golden Pal is the best he has ever trained.

Golden Pal's sire Uncle Mo and broodmare sire Midshipman were both Breeders' Cup Juvenile winners on the main track while his dam Lady Shipman won 13 times, earned over $900,000 and set a course record of 1:00.46 for Saratoga's 5½-furlong turf course.

“We've followed Golden Pal's career closely and he's a very welcome addition to our roster,” said Ashford's Dermot Ryan. “He has speed to burn and like many of those by Uncle Mo, he's a very good-looking horse. I don't think any horse has come close to beating him here in the U.S. since he broke his maiden in the Skidmore Stakes and Uncle Mo has made a very good start as a sire of sires so it's all good news.”

Gainesway Announces 2023 Stud Fees

Gainesway has announced its stallion roster and fees for the 2023 breeding season, led once again by the world-renowned sire Tapit, who will remain at $185,000.

Three-time champion sire Tapit is the leading active sire by Grade 1 winners (29), Grade 1 performers (62), graded stakes winners (96), graded stakes performers (184), stakes winners (154), and stakes performers (299), and he is the all-time leading sire by lifetime progeny earnings ($188,654,112).

Tapit's runners have been led in 2022 by the unbeaten Flightline, whose dominant victories in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap and G1 Pacific Classic Stakes have made him a towering favorite for this year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

As a sire-of-sires, Tapit's top sons at stud include Constitution, Tonalist, Tapiture, Essential Quality, Frosted and the promising young sire Tapwrit.

The brilliantly fast McKinzie will stand for $30,000 in his third year at stud, with the weanlings from his well-supported first book of mares on display at the 2022 fall mixed sales. Street Sense's best son, McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in a career that saw him win top-level races at two, three, and four. Included in those Grade 1 victories was an impressive ¼ Ragozin in the G1 Whitney Stakes.

Joining him with first weanlings at this fall's breeding stock sales is Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run. Hailing from the influential Danzig sire line, Spun to Run showed remarkable speed during his 3-year-old campaign, collecting three consecutive triple-digit Beyers and five times ran a “0” on his Thoro-Graph chart. Spun to Run will stand for $10,000 in 2023.

A $1.2-million yearling, Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit's first foals will be 3-year-olds of 2023. His freshman crop of juveniles has posted wins around the globe, including maiden special weight winners at Monmouth Park, Keeneland, Colonial Downs, Delaware Park, and Lone Star Park. Tapwrit will stand for $10,000 in 2023.

Breeders' Cup Mile winner Karakontie, standing for $10,000 in 2023, has continued to establish himself as one of the best values in Central Kentucky. This year's runners have been led by Spendarella, winner of the G1 Del Mar Oaks, G2 Appalachian Stakes, G3 and Herecomesthebride Stakes, along with a thrilling runner-up effort in the G1 Coronation Stakes during the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting.

Raging Bull (FR), a multiple Grade 1-winning son of top international sire Dark Angel, will stand his second season at stud for $10,000.

A $1.6-million earner, Raging Bull (FR) proved to be a consistently talented racehorse who competed at the top of his division over four racing seasons. He made 18 consecutive graded stakes starts, winning or placing in nine of 14 Grade 1 events, including victories in the G1 Hollywood Derby, G1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes and G1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes.

Gainesway will add two new stallions to its roster for the 2023 breeding season, Olympiad and Drain the Clock.

Olympiad, a five-time graded stakes winner by Speightstown, has been one of North America's top older males of 2022, and he will make his next start in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland.

His year started with a track-record setting performance over 1 1/16 miles in the G3 Mineshaft Stakes at the Fair Grounds, and his resume expanded later in the year with headline-grabbing scores in the G2 New Orleans Classic Stakes, G2 Stephen Foster Stakes, and the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes. He has earned triple-digit Beyers on seven occasions, and won from seven furlongs to 1 ¼ miles.

Drain the Clock stood out as one of the top sprinters of his class, highlighted by his duel with champion sprinter Jackie's Warrior in the G1 Woody Stephens Stakes, where he prevailed by a neck and handed Jackie's Warrior his first defeat around one turn.

The son of Maclean's Music also picked up victories in the G3 Swale Stakes and the G3 Bay Shore Stakes, and he showed precocity winning six of his first eight career starts. Drain the Clock will stand for $10,000.

Gainesway will host a stallion open house from Nov. 7-11 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hot lunch will be served each day.

Following is the complete Gainesway stallion roster and their advertised fees for the 2023 breeding season:

Tapit – $185,000

McKinzie – $30,000

Drain the Clock (NEW) – $10,000

Karakontie – $10,000

Raging Bull – $10,000

Golden Pal to Ashford After Third BC Win Attempt

Dual Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo–Lady Shipman, by Midshipman) will retire to Coolmore America's Ashford Stud after attempting to win his third consecutive Breeders' Cup race next week. The Wesley Ward pupil won the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2021 and the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2020. Owned by the partnership of Westerberg Limited, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Golden Pal will make his final career start in the Turf Sprint Nov. 5 at Keeneland before standing alongside his sire at Ashford.

“We've followed Golden Pal's career closely and he's a very welcome addition to our roster,” said Ashford's Dermot Ryan. “He has speed to burn and like many of those by Uncle Mo, he's a very good-looking horse. I don't think any horse has come close to beating him here in the U.S. since he broke his maiden in the Skidmore S. [at two] and Uncle Mo has made a very good start as a sire of sires, so it's all good news!”

In a career spanning three years, Golden Pal is enjoying perhaps his best season yet as he opened the year with a visually impressive 4 3/4-length win in Keeneland's GII Shakertown S. and shipped to England for a rough trip in the G1 Kings Stand S. before returning stateside for back-to-back scores in Saratoga's GIII Troy S. and Keeneland's GII Woodford S., his second consecutive victory in that race. Overall, he's won eight black-type events–seven graded–and placed in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot. His current record stands at 12-8-2-0 with earnings of $1,815,131. All of his wins have come between five and 5 1/2 furlongs.

“This is the fastest of the fast,” said Wesley Ward after the Shakertown. Ward has made no secret about his feeling that Golden Pal is the best he has ever trained.
