Breeders’ Cup Ins And Outs: Awesome Strong Pulled From Juvenile, Three European Entries Withdrawn

Several defections from the Breeders' Cup pre-entries lists have already occurred.

Early Friday Changes*

A minor shin problem will keep undefeated 2-year-old Awesome Strong from competing in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile next Friday, according to the Daily Racing Form. The colt will get 60 days off.

“We're doing what's best for him,” trainer Jorge Delgado told DRF. “We want him to have a 3-year-old career, a 4-year-old career. We have high expectations for him.”

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has withdrawn Naughty Gal from consideration for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, DRF reports, and will instead target this Sunday's $200,000 Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill Downs. Her defection makes way for the Dallas Stewart-trained Sabra Tuff to enter the field.

Although Tami Bobo and Lugamo Racing Stable's Congruent was pre-entered in both the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) with first preference in the Juvenile Turf, trainer Antonio Sano told Keeneland publicity that the Laurel Futurity winner would be entered in the Juvenile. He worked five furlongs on Keeneland's main track in 1:01 Friday morning.

Never Ending Story, one of two Aidan O'Brien-trained pre-entrants in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, will also not make the trip overseas, according to DRF. Her defection allows Jessamine runner-up Knockyoursocksoff into the main body of the field for trainer Chris Block.

Early Saturday Changes**

Trainer Doug O'Neill told Keeneland publicity that Reddam Racing's Awake At Midnyte, who was pre-entered in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) and the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) with first preference in the Sprint, would be entered in the Distaff.

“We weren't getting in the Sprint,” O'Neill said of Awake At Midnyte, who was third on the preference list of the oversubscribed race. “So she will go in the Distaff.”

Two European runners have been ruled out of Saturday's card thus far.

Two-time Group 1 winner Saffron Beach returned poor bloodwork and will not board the plane to contest the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam told TDN.

“I drew blood on Wednesday to look at her profile and it wasn't good, so we started her on a course of antibiotics and we looked at the profile again on Thursday,” said Chapple-Hyam. “Even though it had improved, it is not in the right zone to be putting her on an aircraft and potentially giving a bug to everyone else and perhaps getting travel sickness.

“We couldn't take the risk for the welfare of her and all the others on the aircraft, so we decided not to go.”

Bayside Boy, the Roger Varian-trained upset winner over Modern Games in the Group 1 QEII Stakes, also will not make the trip to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup Mile, reports DRF.

Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky-Breds: A Closing-Day Play At Keeneland

Though Kentucky Downs features some of the richest races on the calendar, the boutique meet also serves as a launching pad for many horses to stage a big fall and winter campaign.

On this edition of Longshot Look, J.D. Fox examines Saturday's closing day card at Keeneland, and finds a Kentucky Downs alum at a price in Race 8, the Grade 3 Bryan Station Stakes.

Fox's pick has been active on the Kentucky circuit this year, and he comes into Saturday's Bryan Station off a victory in the Gun Runner Stakes at Kentucky Downs.

Revolutionary Racing Kentucky Breaks Ground On New Quarter Horse Track

Joined by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, dozens of state and local officials and hundreds of supporters, Revolutionary Racing Kentucky broke ground Friday on what will be a world-class Quarter Horse track, equestrian center and entertainment complex.

The $55-million investment in eastern Kentucky is expected to create hundreds of union construction jobs over the next year and, when complete, more than 200 good-paying, full-time positions. The track is expected to open for the 2024 racing season.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to take this step and we are excited about what this means to the people of eastern Kentucky,” said Larry Lucas, chairman of Revolutionary Racing Kentucky. “This investment will create jobs, bring in new tax revenues and make Boyd County a destination for horse owners and racing fans from around the country.”

State Sen. Robin Webb, as well as State Reps. Danny Bentley, Scott Sharp, Adam Koenig, Patrick Flannery and Bobby McCool, were among those joining Gov. Beshear at the groundbreaking ceremony.

“Congratulations to Larry Lucas and the entire Revolutionary Racing team on this game-changing milestone,” Gov. Beshear said. “This $55-million investment will help build the future of horse racing in Kentucky, and it will create great jobs for our people in Ashland, adding even more economic momentum to what the commonwealth is seeing as a whole. Companies are betting their futures on Kentucky because of our world-class workforce.”

Also taking part in Friday's ceremony were Revolutionary Racing Kentucky's strategic partners Keeneland Association and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

“The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is grateful for the opportunity to be a strategic partner with the great state of Kentucky and the good people of Ashland to bring employment opportunities and economic development to the region,” said Richard Sneed, principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

In July, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission awarded Revolutionary Racing Kentucky the Commonwealth's ninth and final horse racing license. Set to be built on nearly 200 acres in Boyd County, near Ashland, it will serve as Kentucky's only track dedicated to Quarter Horses. It will feature a 660-yard sprint track and daily purses of $500,000, placing it among the premier quarter horse racing tracks in the nation.

And while racing will serve as its centerpiece, plans call for year-round use for Quarter Horse shows and competitions, as well as an adjacent entertainment complex. Those investments will help generate nearly $1 million in new local tax revenues each year.

“We welcome this substantial investment in horse racing because of what it will mean to so many Kentucky families and small businesses,” said David Osborne, Kentucky Speaker of the House and a respected leader in the horse racing industry. “This investment is the direct result of the legislature's work to cement Kentucky's place as the horse capital of the world. Without a doubt it will translate into jobs and local economic growth, while providing Kentucky's quarter horse enthusiasts with a world-class facility to race and show. Today we break ground, but this track will benefit the region for generations.”

Juvenile: Amoss ‘Very Comfortable’ With Time Between Races For Iroquois Winner Curly Jack

Michael McLoughlin's Curly Jack had his first timed Keeneland workout this Friday, a week in advance of the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance on Nov. 4.

With regular jockey Edgar Morales aboard, the son of 2017 Juvenile winner Good Magic covered the half-mile in :49.80 on a fast main track. The Juvenile will be Curly Jack's first start since capturing the Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs Sept. 17.

“This is his last work going into the race,” trainer Tom Amoss said. “I know the big question on everyone's mind is the time between races and how he will respond to that. I am very comfortable with that. Today's work was designed to be an easy half-mile with a good gallop out. We got just that.”

Curly Jack, a Keeneland September Yearling Sale graduate, began his career with a 4-length victory in a Churchill Downs maiden race June 2. After finishing fifth in the Sanford (G3) at Saratoga in July, he was beaten a head in the Runhappy Ellis Park Juvenile Aug. 14 in his only other start.

Curly Jack's previous works have been at Amoss' Churchill base.

“I am at Churchill more than I am here and I wanted to be around him on a daily basis,” Amoss said.

Working about the same time as Curly Jack was Anderson Stables, Christian Hays and trainer Eddie Kenneally's Shoplifter, who breezed a half-mile in :48.20.

The NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) pre-entrant had been training at Churchill since her runner-up finish Sept. 17 in the Pocahontas (G3).

“She went right after the (renovation) break and did it the right way,” Kenneally said. “It was just a maintenance work. She had her major work last Friday at Churchill (5 furlongs in 1:01.60).”
