Kylee Jordan, Manny Franco Tied In Jockey Of The Week Voting

Two noteworthy riding performances by Manny Franco and Kylee Jordan at completely different racing venues during the week of Sept. 26 through Oct. 2 led to a rare voting tie by the panel of racing experts for Jockey of the Week. The award honors jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

New York-based jockey Manny Franco travelled to Finger Lakes on Monday for the mount on Christophe Clement trainee Acoustic Ave in the Aspirant Stakes for NY-bred 2-year-olds. Off as the prohibitive favorite, Acoustic Ave rolled to a 9 1/4 length win in 1:05.48 for 5 1/2 furlongs.

Returning to his NYRA base, Franco rode Finest Work for the first time for trainer George Weaver in the John Hettinger Stakes for NY-bred fillies and mares on Friday. Breaking from post nine, Finest Work held off a late run from race favorite Marvelous Maude to win by a half length in 1:48.50 for 1 1/8 miles.

On Saturday, Franco was in the irons on Dancing Buck for trainer Michelle Nevin in the Grade 3 Belmont Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds and up. Off as the second choice in the nine-horse field, Dancing Buck broke sharp and lead at every point of call to post a five-length victory in 1:09.60 for six furlongs on turf.

Trainer Chad Brown called on Franco to ride Rocky Sky in the G3 Fasig-Tipton Waya on Sunday. Racing in fourth early, Rocky Sky ranged up on the final turn and held off stablemate Capital Structure to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 2:21.42 for the 1 3/8 miles.

Franco's weekly statistics included six wins and total purse earnings of $615,685. He is currently in second place in the standings at the Belmont at Big A meet.

On the final weekend of racing at Prairie Meadows, apprentice jockey Kylee Jordan, 20, won the Iowa Sorority Stakes at six furlongs with My Happiness for trainer Christine Hicklin and the Iowa Cradle Stakes also at six furlongs on Tyler's Tribe for trainer Tim Martin. Tyler's Tribe won for the fifth time with Jordan in the saddle for all five victories. The connections of Tyler's Tribe are pointing the gelding to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Jordan topped the Prairie Meadows standings with 81 wins and $2,086,624 in total purses for her second leading rider title. Jordan won her first leading rider title at Will Rogers Downs earlier this year. She is the daughter of Iowa-based trainer Todd Jordan and made her riding debut and recorded her first career win at Will Rogers on May 3, 2021.

Jordan's weekly statistics included seven wins and total purses of $268,812.

Other contenders for Jockey of the Week were Tyler Gaffalione who won the G2 Lukas Classic and won the leading rider title at Churchill Downs, Irad Ortiz, Jr. with four graded stakes wins, and Mychel Sanchez who recorded his 1,000th career win.

Preakness Stakes Winner Early Voting Retired To Ashford Stud

Klaravich Stables' classic winner Early Voting has been retired from racing and will stand at Coolmore America's Ashford Stud for 2023.

The son of Gun Runner, out of a Tiznow half-sister to Speightstown made each of his first three starts at Aqueduct, winning a 2-year-old maiden special weight and the Grade 3 Withers Stakes before going down by just a neck to Mo Donegal in the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes.

Despite having the required points for the Kentucky Derby he bypassed it and went straight for the Preakness Stakes on owner Seth Klarman's birthday, where he defeated Epicenter to record a Beyer Speed Figure of 105.

“Early Voting was an outstanding physical specimen as a yearling,” enthused purchaser Mike Ryan. “He had size, strength, scope, substance and tremendous quality. It is very easy to be impressed by him, he has all the credentials to become a successful stallion and I am very confident that breeders will love him.”

“Early Voting identified himself very early in his initial training as one of our top colts in his crop,” said trainer Chad Brown. “He has tremendous gate speed for a horse his size and incredible stamina to compliment it. His performance in the Preakness confirms his talent as one of the best in this talented division.”

“We're delighted to be standing classic winner Early Voting,” said Ashford's Dermot Ryan. “He's a very good-looking son of a remarkable sire in Gun Runner – with an incredible six Grade 1 winners from his first crop – and he's out of a half-sister to the sire of our own Munnings.”

A fee for Early Voting will be announced at a later date.

Classic Winner Westover To Stay In Training At Four

Classic winner Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will remain in training at four, according to trainer Ralph Beckett. The Juddmonte homebred ran sixth in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe behind Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) on Sunday. The G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown went his way in April and was then a running-on third in the G1 Derby in June. The bay blitzed the G1 Irish Derby field by seven lengths at the Curragh later that month and was fifth in Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire})'s G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on July 23.

“Yes, that looks like happening,” Beckett confirmed on his star's pending 4-year-old campaign.

“I thought he ran close to his Irish Derby run, if not his Derby run, on ground which perhaps didn't play to his strengths, and it was great to get him back on track and that close to what his best is.

“He's a big horse, he's been growing through the year as well and he should improve from three to four. He's come out of the race really well, I'm really pleased with him and the way he's come out of it. We haven't made any plans yet, but I'm sure we will.”

Perfect Power In Good Form For Champions Day

Multiple Group 1-winning sprinter Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) is pleasing trainer Richard Fahey in advance of a start in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint at Ascot on Oct. 15. The Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum runner won both the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. at two, and also prevailed in the G3 Greenham S. on his 3-year-old bow. After failing to stay in the G1 2000 Guineas, the colt bounced back to take the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. He was seventh in his two most recent starts–the July 9 G1 July Cup and the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Aug. 7.

“He's in great form–we're very happy with him,” said Fahey.

“We gave him a little bit of a break and he's been training real good. We've had him away a couple of times, he's in great order and we're looking forward to it.

“He loves Ascot. I thought about going to France, but speaking to Sheikh Rashid we decided to go straight there [Ascot] with him.

“He just doesn't want the ground very firm. He's had quite a few runs on very firm ground and it just wasn't suiting him. A bit of decent ground would be great.”

Normally paired with Christophe Soumillon, Perfect Power's team is hunting for a new jockey after the Belgian's two-month suspension begins on Oct. 14.

He added, “There have been discussions and Bruce Raymond [owner's racing manager] is on with that at the moment.”
