Australia: Rich Purses Abound For 4-Year-Olds

The retirement to stud of so many gifted horses after their 3-year-old season is a global gripe among racing fans. The innovators at Sydney's major racetracks – who next week will present the sixth running of The Everest under a slot-holder format – are dangling some very rich carrots as encouragement for owners to prolong their horses' careers. After all, these noble steeds are supposed to be racehorses, not breed horses. The southern hemisphere season commenced in August and, this Friday night in Sydney, 4-year-olds will contest the million-dollar Silver Eagle. First post at Royal Randwick is 9:35 p.m. Eastern or 6:35 p.m. Pacific.

While lucrative, the Silver Eagle's purse pales in comparison to the forthcoming Golden Eagle on Oct. 28. Worth a mouth-watering AU$8 million, the Golden Eagle was quickly established as Australia's third-richest race – a remarkable incentive for a specific age group of older horses. Both races were inaugurated as recently as 2019, but the Silver Eagle has already provided a thrilling finish with last year's winning margin a nose. The horse on the frowning end of that win photo was Ellsberg, who was involved in last week's historic dead-heat for 1st in the G1 Epsom Handicap.

The certainty of a “heavy” track surface holds no fears for Silver Eagle favorite Mr Mozart (3-1), who is three-for-three in the wet. A winner of three straight races prior to a layoff, Mr Mozart was narrowly beaten in his recent resumption. He was compromised by a questionable call of judgment early in that race, and fans of Mr Mozart will be hoping new jockey Brenton Avdulla composes a better trip. The horse has drawn a normally disadvantageous wide gate, but this may well be negated due to the wet conditions. The Silver Eagle, Race 8 of 10 on Friday night, is six and a half furlongs; its richer cousin, the Golden Eagle, will be at seven and a half furlongs. Neither “Eagle” is graded because of their recency, but Sydney can be relied upon at this time of year to dish up plenty of races with group/graded status.

Race 4 is the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes for 3-year-olds at six furlongs. Prior to a setback that saw him scratched two weeks ago, Best of Bordeaux (9-5 favorite) was flirting with a possible slot in The Everest. There are still a couple of vacancies in the 12-horse field for next week's The Everest, whose AU$15 million purse makes it the world's richest race on turf. Recent addition Snapdancer became a sudden subtraction after incurring a minor injury. And Godolphin remains undecided as to what member of the “blue army” will be their representative.

Reverting to this Friday night's undercard, 3-year-olds with a propensity for endurance will contest Race 7, the G3 Gloaming Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. In addition, fillies and mares are well catered to: Race 5 is the G3 Nivision at six furlongs, while Race 9 is the G3 Angst Stakes at a mile. A personal highlight of the undercard will be the sixth,  a new $500,000 race named for famous Sydney race callers John Tapp and Ian Craig. It was John Tapp who was offered the Hollywood Park job in 1990 and brought me with him, to continue after he spent a few weeks on a working vacation. Both long-nestled in retirement, John and Ian will be guests of honor at Royal Randwick and treated to “a lavish bill of fare,” to quote the ever-quotable “Tappy.”

The Randwick card (AUS-A) will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV this Friday night (First Post: 9:35 p.m. ET / 6:35 p.m. PT) alongside cards from Eagle Farm (AUS-B), Scone (AUS-C) and Gold Coast (AUS-D). All races will be livestreamed in HD on the new Sky Racing World Appskyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbet, and AmWager. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to livestreaming, past performances and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.

Former Chicago-Based Jockey Edgar Perez Enjoying Career Year At Gulfstream

Forced to make a career decision last spring due to the closure of Arlington International, Edgar Perez opted to return to South Florida, where he had first ridden without much success shortly after venturing from Venezuela in 2009.

The 42-year-old journeyman, who eventually found a welcoming and comfortable home on the Chicago circuit until this year, has reason to celebrate his move to Gulfstream Park, where he is enjoying the most successful season of his career.

“I'm very very happy. The first time at Gulfstream I didn't do much. Then, I went to Delaware and Chicago,” Perez said. “I came back to Gulfstream and I am thankful for the opportunities. I'm very happy here. I like the weather; I like Miami; I like the track; I like the Tapeta.”

During his first full-time meeting at Gulfstream Park in years, Perez finished third in the jockey's standings behind South Florida mainstays Miguel Vasquez and Leonel Reyes in both wins and purses-won while riding the winners of 75 races and more than $2.4 million in purses during the recently concluded Royal Palm Meet.

“It was a good meeting for me with 75 wins,” said Perez, who enjoyed a five-win day on June 24. “Everything is good for me. I'm happy.”

Perez had even greater reason to celebrate his return to Gulfstream Saturday on the second day of the Sunshine Meet when he rode Atomically to an upset victory over heavily favored Lynx in Saturday's $400,000 My Dear Girl, the 1 1/16-mile final leg of the 2022 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series for 2-year-old fillies sired by accredited Florida stallions.

The Jose Pinchin-trained daughter of Girvin, who had previously finished third in her debut and graduated by seven lengths prior to making her first start in the lucrative FSS series Saturday, made a sweeping move to the lead on the turn into the stretch under Perez and drew away by 6 ¾ lengths over Lynx, who had dominated the first two legs of the series in the $100,000 Desert Vixen and the $200,000 Susan's Girl.

“She's a very nice filly. The first time, she wasn't ready. The second time, she ran big. Saturday, she won easy going long,” said Perez, whose 2022 purses-won total soared to more than $2.8 million — $720,000 more than his previous career high achieve in 2018 with nearly three months to go.

Agent Rene Douglas has been able to book mounts for Perez for a wide range of trainers at Gulfstream, where the resurgent jockey notched stakes victories aboard Armando De La Cerda-trained California Frolic (English Channel, Not Surprising), Elizabeth Dobles-trained Don't Get Khozy (Surfside), Fausto Gutierrez-trained Omixochitl, and Michael Maker-trained Me and Mr. C (Mr. Steele) during the Royal Palm Meet.

Perez has been named to ride Fernando Abreu-trained Boris in Saturday's Hollywood Beach, a five-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds on Tapeta.

Perez has ridden 902 winners since departing Venezuela, where he was the regular rider for trainer Gustavo Delgado's superstar, Bambera, a winner of nine Group 1 stakes, including the 2009 Classico del Caribe at Puerto Rico's Camarero.

Equibase Analysis: Ivar Poised To Upset Coolmore Turf Mile

The 2022 edition of the Grade 1, $1 million Coolmore Turf Mile, an opening weekend staple at Keeneland and run since 1986, drew a full field of 12 plus four also-eligibles. The race will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8. Among the group vying for the top share of the purse and a qualifying spot in the Breeders' Cup Mile in four weeks are seven horses that have banked over $1 million in their careers.

Ivar (BRZ), who won this race two years ago, is one of that group and his last effort may have him ready to become a repeat winner as he was second in the similar $1 million G1 Woodbine Mile Stakes last month. Casa Creed proved he belongs with these following a win when last seen in August, in the G1 Fourstardave Handicap. Similarly, Somelikeithotbrown enters the race off a win in the $1 million G3 Mint Million Stakes. Santin just won the G1 Arlington Million Stakes and adds more depth to the field. Order of Australia (IRE) won the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile in 2020 at Keeneland and was most recently second in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp in France. Smooth Like Strait won the G1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes in May of 2021, and although winless in seven since has been second in six of those. Classic Causeway is the only one of the seven who has yet to win at one mile on turf, because he's never run the distance, but he did win the G1 Belmont Derby in July in wire-to-wire fashion.

Next, there are a number of recent graded stakes winners who have the potential to step up their game to this level. Annapolis is one of those, as he enters the Coolmore Turf Mile off an easy five-length win in the G3 Saranac Stakes. Emaraaty (GB) won the G3 Barnard Baruch Stakes last month. Masen (GB) won the G3 Poker Stakes at the distance of this race in June before a third place finish behind Casa Creed in the Fourstardave. Set Piece (GB) enters the race off a win at the distance on grass in the G3 Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup Stakes. Another recent stakes winner is Gray's Fable, who won the Evan Williams Turf Mile Stakes before a fifth place finish behind Somelikeithotbrown in the Mint Million, in which Atone (one of the also-eligibles) was second. Dark Shift (GB) is another also-eligible, bringing a six for 12 record into the race including a neck defeat in the International Stakes when last seen in July. Natural Power (IRE) and Greyes Creek round out the field, both also-eligibles entering the race off allowance level wins and never having been competitive in a stakes race to date.

Top Win Contenders:

Ivar (BRZ) has been adeptly handled by trainer Paulo Lobo and may be able to duplicate the feat of winning this race in 2020, then at odds of 14 to 1. Prior to that Ivar (BRZ) had raced three times in his native Brazil, winning all three races impressively. After getting acclimated to U.S. racing and winning his second stateside start that June, he was rested two months and returned to finish third in the Tourist Mile Stakes at Kentucky Downs, then four weeks later won this race with a career best 122 ™ Equibase Speed Figure, which remains the best figure earned by any horse in this field in a North American race. After a fast finishing fourth behind Order of Australia (IRE) in the Breeders' Cup Mile, also run at Keeneland that year, Ivar (BRZ) was rested for six months, returning to finish fourth in this race last year in his second start off the layoff. Once again rested for many months, Ivar (BRZ) ran a lot better than one year earlier off the layoff, winning the John B. Schuster Memorial Stakes in July. Given a short rest similar to 2020, Ivar (BRZ) made his next start at this level in the Woodbine Mile Stakes and although no match for five length winner Modern Games, he rallied from 10th in the early stages to get second by a neck. That effort earned him a 113 figure setting him up to repeat his win two years ago this week.

Casa Creed finished fourth behind Ivar (BRZ) in the 2020 edition of this race, then was 12th of 14 in the Breeders' Cup Mile that year. Returning in January of last year, Casa Creed ran the best race of his career when winning the Tropical Turf Mile with a 117 ™ figure, then three races later won the Jaipur Stakes, earning his first grade one stakes win. That form was short lived as he lost three in a row including when eighth in last year's Breeders' Cup Mile, in which Ivar (BRZ) finished third. This year has been a different story, particularly his two most recent races. In June Casa Creed repeated as the winner of the Jaipur with a 105 figure, then two months later won the Fourstardave Handicap, earning a 112 figure in the process. Now on a pattern for another improvement in form and figure, Casa Creed could have a big say in the outcome of this race.

Set Piece (GB) appears to be another top miler who is on the improve and who can do well in this situation. He proved that when closing from last of six to win the Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup Stakes last month with a 112 figure, the same as he earned winning the Wise Dan Stake in June of last year. Set Piece (GB) has experience over the course, having been beaten just two lengths this past April in the Maker's Mark Mile, the spring equivalent of this race. That effort came following seven months off and I'm pretty sure trainer Brad Cox had wished for a race under the horse's belt before that. Now with four races since then including two wins in graded stakes on turf, Set Piece (GB) has a similar potential to Ivar (BRZ) to be closing fastest of all in the stretch and win this year's Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes.

Notes about three others who are contenders but may be ever so slightly a cut below the three above – Santin is two for two at this mile turf trip and four for eight in his career. The wins at a mile came two years ago but one of them was at Keeneland and that's a positive factor. He enters the race off a 113 figure effort winning the Arlington Million and two races before that won the Turf Classic Stakes on Kentucky Derby Day with a 115 figure which, if repeated, would be competitive against the top choices.

Order of Australia (IRE) is attempting to use this race as a prep to become one of few horses to win the Breeders' Cup Mile more than once. When winning that race at odds of 73 to 1 in 2020, he was making his first start in the U.S. and coming off a ninth place finish in Ireland. Then when attempting a similar feat to this year in 2021, Order of Australia (IRE) finished 12th and last in the Keeneland Turf Mile then went back to Europe instead of competing in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Similar to last year, Order of Australia (IRE) enters the race off a runner-up effort in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, with a very strong 122 figure, but it remains to be seen if he will run as well as he did in 2020 or as poorly as he did last year.

As to Smooth Like Strait, the best description is he shows up with his “A” game every time. However, his “A” game hasn't been good enough to win at this level in his last seven races, all in grade one or grade two company. He has finished second in six of those seven races, and third in the other, which happens to have been the Maker's Mark Mile this past spring, where Smooth Like Strait led from the start and for the first six furlongs, then battled head and head for the last quarter mile before losing by a neck and a nose. He ran just as well in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Mile five months earlier, leading from the start and coming up a half-length short at the wire to be second with a career-best 119 figure. Likely to be on the lead early but battling with Somelikeithotbrown, who has the same running style, Smooth Like Strait will likely fight hard to the wire as always, but just like in his last seven races, he could give just enough ground to other horses in the final strides to come up short.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Annapolis (107), Atone (111), Classic Causeway (110), Dark Shift (GB) (102), Emaraaty (GB) (110), Gray's Fable (112), Greyes Creek (103), Masen (GB) (110) and Natural Power (IRE) (108).

Win Contenders (in probability/preference order):

Ivar (BRZ)
Casa Creed
Set Piece (GB)

Letruska, Malathaat Resume Rivalry In Sunday’s Spinster

St. George Stable's Letruska and Shadwell Stable's Malathaat will clash for a fourth time as they headline a field of five fillies and mares entered Thursday for Sunday's 67th running of the $600,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track.

The Juddmonte Spinster is a “Win and You're In” race for the 39th running of the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) to be run here Nov. 5. The Juddmonte Spinster winner has come back weeks later to the win the Breeders' Cup Distaff six times with Bayakoa (ARG) doing it twice in 1989 and 1990. The most recent horse to accomplish the double was Blue Prize (ARG) in 2019.

The Juddmonte Spinster will go as the ninth race on Sunday's 10-race program with a 5:45 p.m. ET post time. First post is 1 p.m.

Trained by Fausto Gutierrez, Letruska will be bidding to become the fifth horse to win the Juddmonte Spinster in back-to-back years. The most recent was Blue Prize in 2018-2019.

Letruska, who has won two of four starts this year, in her most recent race was third behind Malathaat in the Personal Ensign (G1) at the 1 1/8-mile distance. Tyler Gaffalione has the mount on Letruska in the Juddmonte Spinster and will break from post position three.

Malathaat, who also finished in front of Letruska in last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff as well as in the Ogden Phipps (G1), is perfect in two starts at Keeneland. Here she won the Central Bank Ashland (G1) in 2021 and opened her 2022 campaign with a victory in the Baird Doubledogdare (G3). Trained by four-time Juddmonte Spinster winner Todd Pletcher, Malathaat will break from post position one and be ridden by John Velasquez.

Stepping back into Grade 1 company is Rigney Racing's Played Hard.

Trained by Phil Bauer, Played Hard comes into the Juddmonte Spinster off a 5¾-length victory in the Locust Grove (G3) at Churchill Downs on Sept. 17. In her previous Grade 1 test, Played Hard finished fifth behind Malathaat in last year's Alabama at Saratoga.

Joel Rosario has the mount on Played Hard and will break from post position four.

Also returning to Grade 1 competition is Three Diamonds Farm's Army Wife.

Third in the Alabama and Cotillion last year, Army Wife has won one of four starts in 2022 for trainer Mike Maker. Luis Saez has the mount Sunday and will break from post position two.

The field for the Juddmonte Spinster, with riders from the rail out, is:

  1. Malathaat (Velazquez)
  2. Army Wife (Saez)
  3. Letruska (Gaffalione)
  4. Played Hard (Rosario)
  5. Princess of Cairo (Geovanni Franco)

All starters will carry 124 pounds.
