Zebedee’s Pogo Best In The Challenge

Confirming his love for Newmarket, Gary and Linnet Woodward's Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) made all under a perfectly-judged ride from William Buick to register a third pattern-race success in Friday's G2 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Challenge S. Always happy against the far rail shading it from the eventual third Misty Grey (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the May 28 G3 John of Gaunt S. and June 25 G3 Criterion S. winner drew away from that rival and beyond the reach of Sacred (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) to score by 1 1/4 lengths. In seven starts here, the Charlie Hills-trained Pogo who was second last time to Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G2 City of York S. and traded as the 7-4 second favourite has won four and been second on the other three.

No Nay Never’s Midnight Mile Pounces Late For Oh So Sharp Triumph

Roisin Henry's once-raced Midnight Mile (Ire) (No Nay Never–Ruby Tuesday {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), who opened her account with a July 16 debut score tackling six furlongs at Doncaster, returned in style with a last-gasp victory in Friday's G3 Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp S. upped to seven for her black-type debut at Newmarket. The 22-1 chance was steadied and shuffled back through the pack to race in rear after a slick exit. Nudged along to reduce arrears approaching the dip, she negotiated traffic to go seventh entering the final furlong and kept on powerfully up the hill to deny Lose Yourself (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) by a head in the dying strides for a career high.

“She had her first run at Doncaster and Richard [Fahey] said we will let her have a learning experience and she won which was fantastic,” the winning owner explained. “She then had a bit of break and we said we would let her have a bit of a run here today if the ground was soft enough. We didn't expect anything, we thought it was another bit of education as it was another step up, but that was fantastic. She was checked and I thought that had knocked the wind out of her sails. She was running well prior to that, but she battled on and she did that in her first race to. She is a battler.”

Reflecting on a difficult start to life for the filly, Mrs Henry added, “This filly was born by caesarean section as they knew that the mare was in trouble so the veterinary team in Coolmore and the Fethard Veterinary Hospital were amazing. When she was born they must have had 15 guys standing around her awaiting this foal. It was incredible. The fact we got a live foal was amazing and the fact the mare is still alive is amazing. She is really special. You don't expect these kind of ones to go on to be race fillies. She is very well bred and we thought we would hang on to her. It is so exciting. I've dreamt enough now, but if it doesn't get any better than this that's fine. The jockey [Oisin Orr] gave her a super ride and he was very confident with her. He rides her at home so he knows her which is lovely.”

Orr continued, “Through the race I was on and off the bridle and when we can down to the two [-furlong pole] I really asked her. I was just tight of room for a stride or two, but I switched left she has quickened up nicely and done it well. She does everything well at home and has done nothing wrong on the racetrack so far. Hopefully she can keep on improving.”

Midnight Mile, full-sister to a yearling colt, is the third of four reported foals and lone runner out of a full-sister to G3 Noblesse S. and Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Betterbetterbetter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The January-foaled bay's dam is also kin to an additional five black-type performers headed by G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Yesterday (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and the multiple Classic-placed G1 Moyglare Stud S. victrix Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Descendants of the latter include G1 Pretty Polly S. winner Diamondsandrubies (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and G1 Fillies' Mile third You'll Be Mine (Kingmambo), herself the dam of multiple Group-winning G1 Irish Champion S. and G1 Ranvet S. placegetter Eminent (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Midnight Mile's third dam is Lanwades Stud stalwart Alruccaba (Ire) (Crystal Palace {Fr}).

Race to Give Kicks Off Friday

The second annual “Race to Give,” an online giving and awareness campaign running from Oct. 7 to Nov. 12 in support of Thoroughbred aftercare, was launched Friday by its organizers, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA).

RaceToGive.org will again serve as its central hub.

“2022 marked Hagyard Equine Medical Institute's 146th year caring for the equine industry,” said Dr. Luke Fallon, DVM, of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. “These equine athletes have given us so much over the last century and a half. Our veterinarians created the Race to Give to demonstrate our appreciation. Leading an effort to support the critical area of aftercare in conjunction with other leading horse racing organizations was the right thing to do. I hope that last year's generous donations of over $125,000 are just the beginning of what we can continue to do for aftercare support. I look forward to seeing this event grow even more in its second year.”

RaceToGive.org encourages peer-to-peer fundraising with a call to the Thoroughbred industry to create teams and to challenge each other to raise funds for aftercare in fun and creative ways.

“The highlight for me last year was seeing the diversity of donations Race to Give received,” said Ken Ford, CEO of Hagyard Pharmacy. “Traditionally the same people and groups are the ones always supporting aftercare. Race to Give demonstrated that the people who have a heart for caring for horses after their careers are over is more widespread than we have seen in the past. That's the difference we are so fortunate to be a part of. This is an initiative that people in our industry can be proud of and also, we should appreciate the horse enthusiasts and the casual fans who made donations too.”

The number of organizations that have come alongside Hagyard and TCA is impressive and demonstrates the positive support of Thoroughbred aftercare. Organizations including Keeneland, FanDuel TV, Thoroughbred Daily News, Churchill Downs, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, and Resolvet have stepped forward to offer their support.

“It was excellent to see how everyone came together to raise over $125,000 in its first year,” said Mike McMahon, TCA President. “It was incredibly rewarding to be part of an initiative that was able to help so many different groups. TCA was able to use these generous donations to help 55 different aftercare programs. I hope that, in its second year, all of the people who participated last year will be able to share that enthusiasm and pass it on to their friends as well.”

To create or join a team or make a donation, visit RaceToGive.org and follow the program at #aracetogive. All funds raised will be allocated to TCA for distribution to approved grant applicants. All donations are tax deductible and tax receipt will be provided by TCA.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Breeders’ Cup CEO Drew Fleming

The Breeders' Cup championships on Nov. 4-5 will be held at Keeneland for the third time since 2015 and the second time in three years.

The 2020 Breeders' Cup was conducted during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic with limited attendance and officials were anxious to give the Lexington, Ky., racetrack an opportunity to come back as quickly as possible to put on the kind of show they did in 2015 when Triple Crown winner American Pharoah brought down the curtain on the successful  two-day championships with a rousing victory in the Grade 1 Classic.

Drew Fleming, who succeeded Craig Fravel as president and CEO of the Breeders' Cup in November 2019, joins publisher Ray Paulick on this week's edition of the Friday Show. Earlier this year, Fleming became the first horse racing executive to be named to Sports Business Journal's “40 Under 40” roster that recognizes leading young executives in the sports world. Prior to being named CEO, Fleming was chief operating officer for the Breeders' Cup.

The wide-ranging conversation touches on the return of the championships to Keeneland; the event's impact on the local community; the importance of international participation; the health of the organization through its primary revenue streams of nominations, ticketing and sponsorships, and wagering; potential future host sites; the need for greater diversity among Breeders' Cup leadership and throughout the Thoroughbred industry; and Breeders' Cup's longtime focus on safety and integrity and its support of the newly created Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.
