Matron S. Heroine Pearls Galore Joins Tattersalls December Catalogue

Group 1 winner Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) will be offered at the upcoming Tattersalls December Mares Sale from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1. Part of the boutique Sceptre Session on Nov. 29, the G1 Matron S. winner has five group and listed races to her credit for breeder Andreas Putsch's Haras de Saint Pair and trainer Paddy Twomey. A daughter of Group 3 winner Pearl Banks (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Pearls Galore is a half-sister to G3 Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung winner Lucky Lycra (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) and listed heroine Pearly Steph (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself the dam of dual group winner Eternal Pearl (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Haras De Saint Pair's homebred Pearls Galore is another top class Group 1-winning filly coming to this year's Tattersalls December Mares Sale and anyone who saw her recent emphatic victory in the G1 Matron Stakes could not fail to have been impressed.”

Putsch added of the granddaughter of G1 Prix Vermeille victress Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}), “Pearls Galore has everything you could want in a broodmare prospect. She is sound and healthy after 17 career starts.

“She comes from a great family we have had at Saint Pair since her granddam Pearly Shells won the Prix Vermeille, but which also includes the Classic winners St Mark's Basilica (Fr), Magna Grecia (Ire), Sariska (GB) and Beauty Parlour (GB).”

Cave Rock Rolls in Final Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Prep, And Tell Me Nolies Makes Statement in Chandelier

The nearest a horse not trained by Bob Baffert could get in the Oct. 8 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita Park was 24 1/4 lengths behind undefeated winner Cave Rock. That’s because all four of the Baffert runners finished ahead of the other four in the race, with daylight between every one of them.

Who’s The Star Zips To Woodbine Track Record In Durham Cup

Who's the Star, rallying from last place following a sluggish start, roared past his seven rivals to record an impressive victory in Saturday's 1 1/16-mile Durham Cup (G3) at Woodbine.

The 4-year-old Tonalist gelding, one of three horses in the field trained by Mark Casse, was making his first start on a synthetic surface and finished in a track record time of 1:40.73 while scoring by a half-length over Artie's Storm, in the $157,500 event.

“I knew this horse would come running on in, that's what he did the last time he was here,” said jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, who was recording her second straight upset stakes score with the 9-1 Who's the Star after capturing the Niagara over 1 ¼ miles on the E.P. Taylor course at 13-1 in their first partnership. The Kentucky-bred had finished a non-threatening eighth when making an interim appearance in the 1 ½-mile Kentucky Downs Turf Cup (G2).

“And he's pretty speedy that last quarter, so I just wanted to make sure I got going down the backside into the turn and you know that's a bit of a shorter stretch than the E.P. Taylor. But he handled it beautifully, he was just motoring home. I was really impressed.”

Like the Storm, a second Casse trainee, was sent up from his inside post to duel with War Bomber for the leading into the clubhouse turn and held a half-length advantage through a quarter mile in :23.81.

War Bomber moved up just outside the leader to take charge just after a half-mile went by in :47.05 and led by a half-length as the six furlongs went by in 1:09.93.

Artie's Storm, meanwhile, had been sitting just a couple of lengths back while hugging the rail and swung out to launch his move around the final turn. That momentum carried him to the front after they straightened out for home and he led by a head at the stretch call. But Who's the Star had moved up quickly to take dead aim while racing widest and was not to be denied.

Artie's Storm was a clear second, three lengths before War Bomber with Hombre another two lengths behind in fourth.

Frosted Over, the third Casse entrant, ended fifth as the 2-1 choice with Special Forces, Like the King and Irwin rounding out the order of finish.

Riptide Rock was scratched.

Who's the Star, who began his career in California, joined Casse's string in Florida this winter and looks to have developed a fondness for Woodbine with the Durham Cup his third win in as many outings. The Durham Cup win was the fifth for Casse and the fourth for Wilson.

Owned by M Racing Group LLC, Who's the Star is out of the Carson City mare Shine Forth and was a $375,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase by Golden Star Farm. Penn Sales consigned.

The winner returned $20.10.

Cave Rock Romps To Victory In ‘Win and You’re In’ American Pharoah, Baffert Runners Dominate Finish

Cave Rock kept his record perfect Saturday with a commanding victory in the $300,000 American Pharoah (G1) for 2-year-olds at Santa Anita.

The Arrogate colt led from the start under Juan Hernandez and won by open lengths dominating in his first start at 1 1/16 miles, finishing in 1:43.05 on a fast track.

Cave Rock was one of four runners from Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and they swept the top four spots. Cave Rock led in stablemates National Treasure, the runner-up; Hajazi, third; and Gandolfini, fourth in the field of eight.

With the victory, Cave Run earned an automatic, fees-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Nov. 4 at Keeneland as the American Pharoah is a Breeders' Cup Challenge 'Win and You're In' qualifier.

Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, Cave Rock set early fractions of :22.96, :46.82 and 1:11.07 for six furlongs with National Treasure in pursuit but he could not best the winner.

A perfect 3-for-3 with Saturday's win, Cave Rock came in off a wire-to-wire 5 ¼-length triumph in the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1) Sept. 11 at Del Mar that followed an eight-length gate-to-wire romp in his career debut there Aug. 13.

Cave Rock, who was bred in Kentucky by Anne and Ronnie Sheffer Racing LLC, was a $550,000 purchase by Three Amigos Racing Stable (Pegram, Watson, and Weitman) from the Gainesway consignment at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. His dam is the Bellamy Road mare Georgie's Angel.

Cave Rock returned $2.80.
