Nest Romps in Beldame

Nest tuned up for her engagement in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland next month with an effortless victory in the GII Beldame S. at Aqueduct Sunday. Making her first start against her elders, the 1-9 favorite broke well from her inside post and was on the lead in the early strides before allowing Travel Column (Frosted) to take over heading into the first turn. Nest settled into third as Travel Column set the tempo with First to Act tracking in second as the quarter went up in :24.52 and the three fillies lined up across the track after a half in :49.01. Three wide on the far turn, Nest floated wider into the lane, but once straightened she produced an emphatic burst of speed to power clear to an 9 3/4-length victory.

“I was a passenger,” said winning rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. “She's doing so good right now. I broke good. Before, she used to break a step slow. Now, the last couple of times she's been breaking good out of there and that's a big advantage because I don't have to use that much. She put herself in the race and I just waited for my time to go. In the turn, I stayed away from the other horses because I was already going by them a little early, but I don't get in her way. I stayed away a little bit just to keep her there and let her do her thing.”

Winner of the GI Ashland S. in April, Nest was second in the GI Kentucky Oaks and against the boys in the GI Belmont S. She staked her claim to the top of the 3-year-old fillies division this summer at Saratoga with wins in the July 23 GI Coaching Club American Oaks and Aug. 20 GI Alabama S.

“She's going to race at four,” said co-owner Mike Repole. “She's so special. She's by Curlin and she's getting better. Those were three 'wow' performances we just saw out of her and she's improving every start. It's great for racing. She's a special filly.”

Repole will hold a strong hand at the Breeders' Cup, with Nest joined by GI Frizette S. winner Chocolate Gelato (Practical Joke) and GI Hopeful S. and GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner Forte (Violence).

“Nest will probably be a top two or three favorite [in the Distaff],” he said. “Chocolate Gelato will be first or second choice [in the Juvenile Fillies], Forte will probably be first or second choice [in the Juvenile]. It's been an incredible blessing this year. Seven Grade Is and horses like this have made this year incredible.”

Pedigree Notes:

Marion Ravenwood, the dam of last year's GI Santa Anita H. winner Idol (Curlin), has also been represented this year by Sapling S. winner Lost Ark (Violence). The 14-year-old mare, a half-sister to graded placed Abstraction, was barren in 2021 and 2022 and was bred to Curlin this spring. She was purchased by co-breeder Ashview Farm for $400,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale.

Half To Coroebus Debuts At Yarmouth

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Monday's Observations features a Shamardal half-brother to Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

1.20 Killarney, Mdn, €18,000, 2yo, 8f 60yT
WATER NYMPH (IRE) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), one of two Ballydoyle representatives in the line-up, is a half-sister to the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. heroine Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and the stable's G1 Dewhurst S.-placed Smuggler's Cove (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). She is joined by Wednesday's Navan fourth Londoner (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), the €270,000 Goffs Orby graduate whose dam is the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye heroine Gilt Edge Girl (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}).

1.55 Yarmouth, Novice, £9,950, 2yo, 7f 3yT
PHERENIKOS (IRE) (Shamardal) is a half-brother to this year's 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace S. hero Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who was such a big loss to Godolphin, Charlie Appleby and to racing in general when suffering his life-ending injury last month. One of the last of the Shamardals, the relative of another high-class Godolphin stalwart in Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) faces a tough task on debut opposed by the Gosdens' well-regarded Alzahir (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), not seen since disappointing when too free in the Listed Chesham S. at Royal Ascot.

War Like Goddess Earns Triple-Digit BSF For Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Win, Takes Aim On Breeders’ Cup Turf

George Krikorian's War Like Goddess, who was a dominant winner of Saturday's Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) at the Belmont at the Big A fall meet, will now set her sights on another matchup with male rivals in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) on November 5 at Keeneland.

A bay daughter of English Channel, War Like Goddess scored the second Grade 1 victory of her career with a smart ride by Jose Lezcano, tracking in third through the first mile and a quarter of the 1 1/2-mile turf marathon before unleashing her bid in the final turn and powering away to a 2 3/4-length score over determined pacesetter Bye Bye Melvin. That rival is under consideration for the Turf, trainer Graham Motion said.

War Like Goddess' win, which earned a career-best 105 Beyer Speed Figure, came on the heels of a troubled second when attempting a title defense in the Flower Bowl (G2) at Saratoga Race Course where she stalked a pedestrian pace set by the victorious Virginia Joy and came up a neck shy after a late run in the stretch.

Mott said it was satisfying to see War Like Goddess work out a clean trip in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic with Lezcano in the irons for the first time.

“It was good. I was happy to see her get an opportunity to run her race,” said Mott. “I think it helped that there was a little pace in the race and they strung the field out a little bit and that they weren't all jammed up going super slow. There was a legitimate pace horse in there.”

With the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf contested at 1 3/16-miles at Keeneland, War Like Goddess will instead set her sights on added distance against the boys in the $4 million Turf at 1 1/2 miles.
