Jose Lezcano Wins Two Graded Stakes En Route To Jockey Of The Week Title

Two graded stakes wins, including the prestigious Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, led veteran New York jockey Jose Lezcano to be voted Jockey of the Week for Oct. 3 through Oct. 9. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, honors jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

Riding for Hall of Fame trainer, Bill Mott at the Belmont at the Big A meet on Saturday, Lezcano was aboard Elite Power in the G2 Vosburgh Stakes, a “Win And You're In” for a berth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. As the favorite in the field of five, Elite Power sat in second early making the front before a half-mile was run. Turning for home, Elite Power opened up and won as easily as the 1-2 odds suggested to post a 5 3/4-length win in 1:23.98 for seven furlongs.

“He was very comfortable the whole way around, I could go to the lead when I want,” said Lezcano.

Riding again for trainer Bill Mott, Lezcano was the pilot for the first time on the 5-year-old mare War Like Goddess taking on males for the first time in the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic. Breaking from post position two, War Like Goddess sat a comfortable third, two paths off the rail down the backstretch. Around the far turn, she matched strides with Bye Bye Melvin and surged clear to post an emphatic by 2 3/4-length win in 2:27.29 for the 12-furlong inner turf test.

The connections intend to run War Like Goddess against males again in the G1 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf.

“She's a very nice mare and she does everything right,” said Lezcano. “When I asked her, she gave me her race. When you ride a horse for Billy, you've always got a chance to win this kind of race.”

Lezcano, a 37-year-old native of Chiriqui, Panama, began riding horses on father's farm before attending the Laffit Pincay, Jr. Jockey School in Panama. Lezcano moved to the United States in 2003 and made his first start on March 14, 2004 at Gulfstream Park winning his first race that same day. Lezcano has won multiple leading rider titles including Gulfstream Park, The Meadowlands, Monmouth Park and at the 2019 Belmont Park spring/summer meet. He won his 3,000th career win on May 5, 2022 at Belmont Park. He is currently in second place in the Belmont at the Big A jockey standings with 16 wins.

Weekly statistics for Lezcano included six wins and $633,688 in total purses.

Other nominees for Jockey of the Week were Arnaldo Bocachica who won three stakes races at Charles Town, Irad Ortiz, Jr. with four graded stakes wins, Umberto Rispoli with two graded stakes wins, and Miguel A. Vasquez who led all riders in wins with 10.

The 2022 Foal Crop Dips Again, by 2.2%

The Jockey Club (TJC) announced Wednesday that breedings in 2021 have resulted in 18,609 live foals of 2022. At this same time last year, The Jockey Club reported that the breedings had resulted in 19,021 live foals, which marks a year-over-year decline of 2.2%. The foal crop has declined every year since 2015 and was at 35,274 as recently as 2008.

The Jockey Club estimated that the number of live foals reported so far is 85-90% complete.

In total, 1,303 stallions covered 29,065 mares, according to statistics compiled through Oct. 6. The number of stallions declined from the 1,447 that were active in the preceding year, a drop of 10%, and the number of mares bred declined by 2.1%.

Kentucky was once again the runaway leader when it comes to Thoroughbred breeding activity, accounting for 57.8% of the mares reported to be bred in North America and 61.6 % of the live foals.  A total of 16,796 mares were bred to 207 different Kentucky-based stallions, producing 11,460 live foals, for a 0.7% decrease over figures from the previous year. However, the number of mares bred to Kentucky stallions showed a slight increase of 1.9%.

Among the 10 states and provinces that were among the top 10 in terms of mares covered, four–California, Ontario, Oklahoma and Indiana–produced more live foals in 2022 than in 2021. Indiana had the biggest gain, with the number of live foals reported going up by 20.3%.

Outside of Kentucky, California was the leader in number of mares bred with 1,939. Florida was next with 1,617.

The Coolmore stallion Practical Joke (Into Mischief) led all stallions in the category of mares bred. He was bred to 231 mares. Second on the list was Goldencents (Into Mischief) at 230. Showing the popularity of sons of Into Mischief, Authentic (Into Mischief), in what will be his first crop, was next at 229 mares. Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}), also a first-crop sire, came in fourth, having been bred to 222 mares. Maclean's Music (Distorted Humor) was next at 221, making a remarkable jump after being bred to 57 mares the prior year.

Still another son of Into Mischief (Honest Mischief) led the way in the category of non-Kentucky-based sires. Standing in New York, he was bred to 127 mares.

Twelve stallions were bred to 200 or more mares and 43 were bred to 140 or mares, which exceeds the cap The Jockey Club had attempted to impose to encourage diversity in the breed.
