Idol To Stand At Taylor Made Stallions; Full Brother To Nest Won 2021 Santa Anita Handicap

Idol, winner of the 2021 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) for trainer Richard Baltas and a full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Nest, has been retired and will stand the upcoming breeding season at Taylor Made Stallions, the farm announced on Friday. The son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin out of the stakes-winning A.P. Indy mare Marion Ravenwood was a $375,000 Keeneland September Sale graduate and he retires having hit the board in six of eight starts for owner Calvin Nguyen.

Idol will stand the 2023 season for $10,000 S&N as a Repole Stable/Taylor Made Stallions Venture.

“Idol fits the profile of what we are looking for,” said Taylor Made's Ben Taylor. “He's by a world-class sire and out of a world-class producer. He's got the looks and he's a G1 talent. It's the same ingredients Not This Time possessed when he arrived at Taylor Made.”

In his biggest victory in the historic Santa Anita Handicap (G1), Idol defeated a contentious field that included Grade 1 winners Maxfield—who was previously unbeaten—and Express Train, as well as graded stakes winners Independence Hall and Tizamagician. With Joel Rosario aboard, Idol traveled five-wide around the far turn, collared the leaders in the stretch following a powerful rally and won by a half-length, recording a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 102.

It didn't take long for Idol to announce his arrival on the scene. He broke his maiden in his second career start at three, winning a seven-furlong maiden special weight event in 1:22 flat at Churchill Downs, running a 94 Beyer. Next up, he set a Churchill Downs track record in just his third lifetime start, winning a 1 3/16-mile allowance race by 5 ¾ lengths in 1:55.97 and earning a 98 Beyer.

Bred in Kentucky by Leonard Riggio's My Meadowview LLC, Idol hails from a strong and active family replete with black-type. His full sister Nest has banked more than $1.8 million thus far in her sensational racing career and on Sunday she crushed her opposition by 9 ¾ lengths in the Beldame Stakes (G2) to add to her already impressive resume. In addition to her facile win in the Beldame, Nest has captured the Alabama Stakes (G1), the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), and the Ashland Stakes (G1). She also finished second to males in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and was runner-up in this year's Kentucky Oaks (G1). Idol's 2-year-old half-brother, Lost Ark, won his first two career starts, including the Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park in August by 7 ½ lengths.

Nest is co-owned by Repole Stables.

California Angel Returns To Scene Of Her Biggest Victory For Queen Elizabeth II

One of the most visually impressive performances of the 2021 Keeneland Fall Meet was the dash to victory by California Angel in the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G2).

Twelfth in a field of 13 at the top of the stretch, California Angel rallied eight-wide in the middle of the track to win by a head and earn a spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Del Mar.

California Angel, who is owned by Chris Walsh and trained by George Leonard III, returned to Keeneland Thursday morning for a start in Saturday's 39th running of the $600,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) Presented by Dixiana for 3-year-old fillies to be contested at 1 1/8 miles on the grass.

“We were honored to be invited,” Leonard said of California Angel, who finished third in the Dueling Grounds Oaks (L) going 1 5/16 miles at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 5 in her most recent start.

In the Breeders' Cup going a mile, California Angel drew post 14. She finished 11th but only 4 lengths behind the winner, Pizza Bianca.

“It was a tough day,” Leonard said. “She got bounced around and didn't get a good trip. It was one of those races that you would like to run over and get a whole different outcome.”

California Angel spent the winter at Fair Grounds in New Orleans and got a break after running second in the Allen Black Cat LaCombe Memorial in her return to the grass.

“She had a tough campaign as a 2-year-old and she deserved a little time off,” said Leonard, who did not bring her back to the races for nearly six months.

“I was very pleased with her race at Kentucky Downs. She was bottled up down on the inside and I wish she could have gotten outside a little more.”

Rafael Bejarano, who was aboard California Angel for her first four starts that included the victory here, has the mount Saturday and will break from post one.

“She's trained very well since her last race,” Leonard said. “After this, she will probably go back to Fair Grounds and see how things go.”

Signator Becomes 50th Rising Star for Tapit

Signator (Tapit) earned the 'TDN Rising Star' tag with a good-looking score at second asking at Belmont at the Big A. A $1.7-million OBSAPR acquisition after breezing in :20 4/5 for Eddie Woods, he finished up well to be second on debut going six panels at this oval Sept. 16 and was hammered down to 3-5 favoritism to go one better here. Away a beat slow from his inside stall, the gray tugged his way up the fence, sitting near the back of the tightly bunched group. Saving ground off a modest half-mile in :48.73 over a muddy surface, Signator was patiently handled under a smart ride from Javier Castellano, who didn't panic behind a wall of horses turning for home and got the opening he was looking for at the top of the lane. Signator dove through and rolled clear for an impressive 4 1/2-length score over Weekend Tizzy (Bernardini).

Signator is the 50th 'TDN Rising Star' for his perennial leading sire Tapit. He is a full-brother to $900,000 FTSAUG buy and GSW Thoughtfully. He is also a half to GSW Annual Report (Harlan's Holiday) and MSW Giant Payday (Giant's Causeway). His second dam is GISW Furlough (Easy Goer) and this is also the family of top-level scorers Dancing Spree, Fantastic Find and Finder's Fee. Signator also shares the same female family as GSW Feathered (Indian Charlie), dam of unbeaten sensation Flightline (Tapit).
