Late September Returns From Layoff Following Royal Ascot Trip To Win Louisiana Legacy

Delta Downs hosted the $100,000 Louisiana Legacy Stakes for state-bred 2-year-olds on Saturday night as the track closed out another race week in Vinton, Louisiana. The race was won by Kevin Stedman's Late September under jockey Jose Rodriguez.

The bay colt was making his first start for Stedman and trainer Jose Camejo, who had to wait a while to celebrate in the winner's circle as a jockey's objection was lodged against him by C. J. McMahon, the rider King's Lute, who finished second. After several tense moments the claim of foul was disallowed and the win was made official.

Late September was making his first start in four months in the Legacy following at trip to Royal Ascot and was facing state-bred company for the first time. Fresh and ready to run, he broke sharply and settled back into fifth position early in the seven-furlong test around two turns.

The pace was set by Bisping who traveled the opening quarter mile in :22.73 and reached the half-mile mark in :47.24. The pacesetter, and 2-1 co-favorite along with Late September, was challenged by the eventual winner as the field entered the second turn but he could not repel the challenge. Bisping would go on to finish fifth in the field of nine.

When Late September entered the final furlong he was put to the test by King's Lute, who had rallied stoutly from the back on the pack. The pair came together in the upper stretch before Late September pulled clear to finish one length to the good of his rival at the finish line.

The Boss Soss checked in third, another 5 3/4 length behind the runner-up.

Late September finished the trip in 1:28.13 over a fast track.

The win by Late September was the second of his four-race career. He earned $60,000 for the effort and now has a bankroll of $97,870.

Bred in Louisiana by Coteau Grove Farms LLC, Late September is a son of Munnings out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Hello Maggie May. Stedman purchased him this summer in Lexington for $60,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Horses of All Ages Sale, where Grovendale Sales consigned for the complete dispersal of Dew Sweepers LLC.

In his previous start, Late September finished last of 17 runners in the six-furlong Coventry Stakes (G2) June 14 at Royal Ascot for Dew Sweepers and trainer Rusty Arnold. Prior to his trip abroad, he broke his maiden May 20 at Churchill Downs after finishing fourth in his career debut in April at Keeneland.

Late September returned $6.

Addeybb Bows Out On A High

No longer a force to be reckoned with in the major events across Europe, Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's stalwart Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) provided the deflated William Haggas stable with a much-needed boost on Sunday as he signed off with a hard-fought success in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris.

Haggas issued a statement after the race to the PA news agency which read, “I'm absolutely thrilled to bits and we would like to call it a day with him now. He's been a fantastic servant and it is wonderful he has finished on a high. So, we'll retire him now. He's been magnificent and has taken us across the world. He did us proud in Australia, he's won a Champion Stakes at Ascot, he's been a marvellous horse.”

Only sixth in the G2 Prix Dollar at this ParisLongchamp venue at the start of the month, the four-times group 1 winner was nevertheless shown due respect as the 17-10 favourite and quickly settled in the wake of Monty (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) under Tom Marquand. Left behind by that rival in the straight, the cause looked lost but the veteran responded to his rider's urgings to make up the deficit inside the last 50 metres and prevail by 1 1/4 lengths.

“Obviously, on heavy ground he is very effective, and we were keen to finish on a winning note. Now he has done we'll let him enjoy a wonderful retirement. He means a lot to the yard, he's been a friend to all of us. Kind, sweet-natured horse, just a lovely horse. This is just a great result today.”

A three-time winner at three, Addeybb registered his first group score at four when taking the Sandown's G2 bet365 Mile. The following season, he took the Wolferton S. at Royal Ascot and came back later that summer to annex the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. before rounding out the year with a runner-up finish behind Magical (Ire) in the G1 Qipco Champion S. Poised for the best season of his career, he returned at six to vanquish Australian star Verry Elleegant (NZ) in both Rosehill's G1 Ranvet S. and G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at Randwick. Runner-up in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. while returning to the Royal meeting, he bounced back to secure the Listed Doonside Cup before going one better than the previous season and landing the 2020 renewal of the Champion S. Returning Down Under for last year's Ranvet and Queen Elizabeth, he had to play the bridesmaid to Verry Elleegant in the former, but turned the tables narrowly in the latter. Given over two months off, the gelding was bested by St Mark's Basilica (Fr) in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S., and would only make one more start that season, finishing sixth in the Champion S. Earlier this term, Addeybb finished third in a pair of races at Sandown–the May 26 G3 Brigadier Girard followed by the Listed Gala S. July 1.

Addeybb was back in the blinkers that had been employed once only during his career, when dealing with Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) in last year's Queen Elizabeth S. For Marquand, his last ride on the 8-year-old was an emotive one.

“It's special–he took my career to a new level and we have been trying to get that spark back in him,” he said. “We were hoping he'd come and win and he's a real pleasure to have anything to do with. We've changed up his headgear a few times and it worked–the ground helped as well as the blinkers–he's been fantastic.”

Pedigree Notes
Addeybb's dam Bush Cat (Kingmambo), whose other stakes performer was the GIII Generous S. third Meer Kat (Ire) (Red Ransom), is a daughter of the German listed scorer and G3 Royal Whip S.-placed Arbusha (Danzig). She is a full-sister to the G2 Goldene Peitsche winner Nicholas and to Danlu, whose descendants include the G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Gran Premio di Milano hero Strategic Choice (Alleged). This is the dam line of the US Fillies' Triple Crown heroine Shuvee (Nashua).

Lope De Vega’s Quantanamera Slays Winterkonigin Rivals

Jurgen Sartori's unbeaten 2-year-old filly Quantanamera (Ger) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Quaduna {GB}, by Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) posted an impressive three-length debut success tackling nine furlongs at Dortmund last month and blitzed those that dared once more in Sunday's G3 BBAG Preis der Winterkonigin, Germany's premium event for juvenile fillies, at Baden-Baden. The well-backed 6-4 favourite was sharply into stride from the outside stall and bowled along under a firm hold on the front end. Settling the contest in an instant when shaken up at the top of the straight, she left toiling rivals trailing in her wake from the quarter-mile marker and quickened clear in impressive fashion before gearing down inside the final furlong to easily outclass Empore (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by an untroubled 8 1/2 lengths.

“After Quantanamera had worked two weeks ago, I said to my wife that we might have a really exceptional horse in the stable,” Cologne trainer Andreas Suborics told GaloppOnline after registering a first win in the one-mile contest. “She is the best filly I've ever had in training and my pulse was racing today. It was a gala performance and she will now get entries for all the major races, including the [G1] Prix de Diane, but we will enjoy this success first.”

Quantanamera, a half-sister to Listed Prix Le Fabuleux runner-up Quello (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), becomes the 61st pattern-race winner for her sire (by Shamardal) and is the third of five foals and second scorer from as many runners out of dual G3 Premio Verziere victrix Quaduna (Ger) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}). Quaduna is the leading performer for G2 Schwarzgold-Rennen winner Quelle Amore (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), herself a full-sister to Listed Prix Max Sicard victor Quidamo (GB). Quelle Amore is also kin to Listed Badener Steher Cup winner Qsar (Ger) (Tiger Hill {Ire}). Quaduna, who hails from the family of dual Group 1-placed G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) and G2 German 1000 Guineas heroine Que Belle (Seattle Dancer), has a yearling filly by Saxon Warrior (Jpn) and a weanling filly by Too Darn Hot (GB) to come.

Back to Deauville as the Arqana October Sale Begins

DEAUVILLE, France–The broodmare shopping spree of Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals several years ago has already resulted in his first homebred Group 1 winner, Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), a daughter of the Jeremy mare Queen Blossom (Ire) who heads next to the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland.

It was next door to that track that Fernandez Pujals, who operates as Yeguada Centurion, bought Needmore Flattery (Flatter) from Lane's End Farm in 2019. That same year she had foaled a Gun Runner colt, who was later named Taiba and went on to to win this season's GI Santa Anita Derby and G1 Pennsylvania Derby. His trainer Bob Baffert is not known for scouting the European yearling sales, but it would be no surprise to see some transatlantic interest in Taiba's yearling brother from the first crop of Arc winner Waldgeist (GB), who features on the opening day of Arqana's October Yearling Sale as lot 51.

Consigned by the Garcon family's Haras de l'Hotellerie, which boards mares for the Yeguada Centurion operation, the chestnut colt is the fourth foal for his dam, a hard-knocking multiple stakes winner who claimed 17 victories during a four-season racing career and hit the jackpot with her first foal, Taiba.

The October Sale in Deauville was expanded during the pandemic to incorporate some Osarus yearlings and that larger format has remained, with a five-day auction conducted in three parts, commencing from Monday morning.

Part 1 of last year's sale featured as many international names on the buyers' sheet as one might see during the August Sale and, following solid trade throughout the season, we can expect that to roll on this week to Arqana, which has catalogued 781 yearlings, with 333 of those in Part 1, staged over Monday and Tuesday.

Included among the early offerings is a half-brother to last season's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Tiger Tanaka (Fr) (Clodovil {Ire}) by the increasingly popular Mehmas (Ire) who is consigned as lot 42 by Haras d'Etreham. In fact consecutive lots from that draft could well attract plenty of interest as the next through the ring will be the Almanzor (Fr) second foal of the G2 Prix de Sandringham winner Mission Impassible (Ire), who is herself a daughter of Galileo (Ire) and the G1 Nunthorpe S. winner Margot Did (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}).

A little later on the opening day, Haras du Logis Saint German will offer lot 157, a full-brother to its Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Dream And Do (Fr), who is one of 19 yearlings by the French champion sire Siyouni (Fr) in the sale.

On of the this season's freshman sires in Europe whose stock will not have been seen too far outside France is Siyouni's fast son City Light (Fr), who is represented by 32 yearlings at Arqana. Trained locally in Deauville by Stephane Wattel, City Light was a dual Group 3 winner in France and runner-up in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot, and he is now standing at the farm that launched Wootton Bassett, Haras d'Etreham.

Selling begins on Monday at the Elie de Brignac complex at 11am local time.
