Kingman’s TDN Rising Star Nostrum Dominates HQ Feature

Sir Michael Stoute had not won Newmarket's G3 Tattersalls S. since 1994, Annus Mirabilis (Fr) (Warning {GB}) doing the deed back when it was known as the Somerville Tattersall S., and the local elder bridged a 28-year gap after 'TDN Rising Star' Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake {GB}, by Dubai Destination) asserted his superiority in taking fashion to frank the impression given on debut in July. Juddmonte's March-foaled bay had delivered a scintillating performance over seven furlongs at Sandown in that only prior outing and accepted a tow in second after a sharp getaway in this black-type bow. Sent forward to dispute the lead from halfway, the 7-4 second choice was shaken up in front passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing on the climb to the line to easily tame Listed Chesham S. winner and G2 Vintage S. second Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Godolphin's G2 Superlative S. runner-up and Listed Denford S. scorer Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was unable to land a telling bow from off the pace and finished three lengths further back in third. Rank outsider Abravaggio (Ire) (Caravaggio) made a bold attempt from the front and was outclassed, but not disgraced, once headed and finished 15 lengths adrift of third.

“I thought it was a very warm race, but he did it very nicely first time and was entitled to come and run in a race like that,” said Stoute after notching an overall fourth winner of the race. “We expected a very big run, but for a horse racing for the first time like he was it is always difficult to fathom. It is so far so good and you could only be pleased. I don't know if we will see him again this season. We will take him home and chill him out and relax him and put him back in fast work. It is a difficult time of year, especially for 2-year-olds when the weather turns, so we don't know. I would like to give him one more run [this year].”

Holloway Boy's trainer Karl Burke was not downcast in defeat and commented, “We're delighted with that as he missed eight to 10 days with a dirty scope and missed the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster]. Danny Tudhope said he would be suited by a mile, so we could look at the [Oct. 22 G1] Vertem Futurity Trophy or, beyond that, the Breeders' Cup.”

Nostrum becomes the third black-type scorer produced by the dual stakes-winning G3 Select S. runner-up Mirror Lake (GB) (Dubai Destination), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Lanwades Stud S. victrix Hateya (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-brother to dual Group-winning G1 C F Orr S. second Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Listed Heatherlie S. victor Titus (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and a yearling filly by Frankel (GB). Descendants of his third dam Roupala (Vaguely Noble {Ire}) include this term's G1 Saudi Cup hero Emblem Road (Quality Road), multiple Grade I-winning distaffer Ventura (Chester House), dual elite-level winners Harlem (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) and Queen Supreme (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and stakes-winning G1 Prix Royal-Oak runner-up Erudite (GB) (Generous {Ire}).

The Horse Comes 1/ST, Presented By 1/ST Racing: From The Track To The Trail

A former junior rider in the show jumping arena, Emma Gurnick began galloping horses at Golden Gate several years ago. During her time in the show ring, she gravitated towards Thoroughbreds for their athleticism and bravery on the course. Determined to help the equestrian community see the value and performance potential of the Off-the-Track Thoroughbred (OTTB), Emma became the Aftercare Liaison for Golden Gate Fields. In her role, Emma works tirelessly to ensure the horses at Golden Gate Fields find their perfect person. Her unique ability to know the horse inside and out comes from working horses in the morning and some of the horses she has galloped are those that she helps to find second careers for.

Fireitup, affectionately known as “Fu” or “Kung Fu Panda” is one such horse.

Emma met Fireitup when the filly first came to the barn of trainer Quinn Howey, where she is employed as an exercise rider. Exercise riders often get on over a dozen horses each day. They do not get a chance to develop a rapport with a horse unless the horse (and the trainer) like them.

Although a “plain bay,” the 2-year-old horse radiated personality and with Emma and Fu, the rapport was instantaneous, and she quickly became a barn favorite.

Fu was always eager to train and competitive, but it was clear that her heart exceeded her ability. After one win and one second from six starts, Howey decided it was time for Fu, by then a 4-year-old, to find a new career and new person to love her. Emma set out to find her perfect home.

In late July Stacey Schoeningh contacted Emma after seeing her 1/ST Racing business card on the bulletin board at a stable near Golden Gate Fields. Stacey was looking for a forever horse, a partner to go on trail rides with and a companion for many years to come. Fu fit the bill — a brave and steady filly who was never phased by new sights or sounds. Her smooth gaits would make her a comfortable ride up and down hills and her willing and energetic nature was ideal for a trail mount.

Emma sent Stacey a photo of Fu and after the 4-year old filly made an appearance in her dream that night, it was settled — Fu was going home with her. That weekend Fu hopped right up into the trailer without blinking and was on her way to her forever home in the Sonoma valley.

Fu at Golden Gate, Aislinn Finn up

Since Fu was a newly-minted OTTB, Emma volunteered to take her on her first trail ride in her new surroundings. Stacey had spent a few weeks getting acquainted with Fu and introducing to her new stablemates, who were unlike any she had ever met before — two camels who terrified her. Soon she had accepted the two dromedaries as friends.

On a sunny August morning, they set out for a ride with Stacey on a Friesian mare and another friend on a Belgian. The two of them dwarfed little Fu, who had never seen a vineyard before.

The trio trotted through rows of grapes and waved to the workers tending to them. Less than a month prior, Fu had breezed on the track. Now she marched along the trail like she had been born to do it.

Since that day, Fu has gone on several more adventures in Northern California's wine country, proving that the stoicism and athleticism of the Thoroughbred Racehorse transfers from the track to the trail.

Fu is just one of many horses placed through 1/ST Racing's aftercare team, which is comprised of a team of hard-working individuals dedicated to making sure the Thoroughbreds at 1/ST tracks are paired with the best individuals for continued success. Nothing is more rewarding to Emma and the team than seeing an off- track Thoroughbred thriving in their new environment.

Aftercare Facility Spotlight

In the Sonoma Valley not far from where Fireitup is stabled is Pamela Berg's aftercare facility. Glen Ellen Vocational Academy is home to several dozen retired racehorses and singlehandedly run by Pamela, a former racing steward.

The farm serves as a permanent sanctuary for former racehorses who are unable to thrive in a second career after racing as well as aiding in placement of horses who can go on to new homes.

The farm and its then 34 horses survived the Nuns fire that devastated the valley in 2017. Pamela has remained committed to her animals in the face of in the face of disaster and has come out on top.

If you would like to contribute to Glen Ellen Vocational Academy and provide resources to the horses who call it home, you can donate through their website.

Australia: A Golden Rose For Godolphin?

The Godolphin global juggernaut, which captured four million-dollar races in three countries last weekend, targets the same purse this Friday night at Sydney's Rosehill Racecourse. The Group 1 Golden Rose has attracted a field of 17 newly-turned 3-year-olds, including a trio carrying the ubiquitous “Godolphin blue.” The seven-furlong Golden Rose is one of five stakes on a Rosehill card which gets underway at 9:55 p.m. Eastern.

Barely after the dust settled from the heroics of Modern Games and Mysterious Night in Toronto, Nations Pride in New York and Anamoe in Sydney, Godolphin will furnish the top two horses in Golden Rose wagering. In Secret (2-1) has three wins and an unlucky second from four career starts. The filly comes off a victory in the Run to the Rose (watch replay), a prime example of a “key prep” with eight of the last ten Golden Rose winners having contested that race.

In Secret's popularity was cemented by the engagement of champion jockey James McDonald, who rode five winners last Friday night and is hitting at a 30% clip since the new season began on Aug. 1. Golden Mile (5-1) has two wins and an excellent second (against a bias) in his three career starts. The colt was sired by Godolphin's 2016 Golden Rose winner, Astern. The “blue army” also entered Daumier (40-1), a longshot winner at G1 level last season who did little in his seasonal debut.

Beyond Godolphin, the race features last season's champion 2-year-old. Fireburn is the most experienced horse in the field with eight races under her belt and, as a dual G1 winner (including the Golden Slipper, the world's richest juvenile race), is also the best credentialled. She's Extreme developed into Fireburn's biggest rival last season, ultimately defeating the champion in their final clash. Both fillies are quoted at 10-1 for Friday night's Golden Rose, and each did enough in their 3-year-old debuts to warrant consideration second-up.

However, there is a sobering historical counterweight to the positive profiles of In Secret, Fireburn, and She's Extreme: fillies have an abysmal record in the Golden Rose, winning only one of the 19 runnings. Combining this with the aforementioned Run to the Rose stat, I recommend considering the colts who exited that key prep race: Best of Bordeaux (12-1), Sejardan (25-1), Political Debate (60-1) and Promitto (35-1). Of these, Best of Bordeaux is cross-entered (see below) and my preference is Sejardan. A winner of three from six starts, this colt had support when luckless in the Golden Slipper last March, gives every indication of enjoying his first race beyond six furlongs, and is 2-for-2 second run off a layoff.

The Golden Rose (Race 8 of 10) bears watching as a future form reference. Last year, the favorite and runner-up was none other than Anamoe, whose most recent of four subsequent G1 wins came last weekend for Godolphin. Fourth home in 2021 was Artorius, who finished third in this year's G1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. Yes Yes Yes parlayed a second-place finish in 2019 with victory in The Everest, the world's richest turf race which will be run in Sydney on Oct. 14. The Everest is conducted under a slot-holder format and, with six slots still open, the Golden Rose will be keenly observed and evaluated.

Friday night's supporting stakes are:

G3 Colin Stephen Quality (Race 4), a traditional prep for the G1 Metropolitan Handicap on September 30. Both races are at 1-1/2 miles.

Heritage Stakes (Race 6), for 3-year-olds at 5-1/2 furlongs. Best of Bordeaux, a 12-1 shot for the Golden Rose, is more likely to contest the Heritage, where he is 9-5 favorite with James McDonald listed to ride.

G2 Golden Pendant (Race 7), for fillies and mares at seven furlongs.

G2 Shannon Stakes (Race 9), for 3-year-olds and up at 7-1/2 furlongs; won last year by a Chris Waller-trained 40-1 shot.

The Rosehill card (AUS-A) will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV this Friday night (First Post: 9:55 p.m. ET / 6:55 p.m. PT) alongside cards from Newcastle (AUS-B), Gold Coast (AUS-C) and Belmont (AUS-D). All races will be live-streamed in HD on the new Sky Racing World Appskyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbet, and AmWager. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to live-streaming, past performances and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.
