Two Trainers, Jockey, Suspended After Searches at Parx

Parx-based trainers Miguel Penaloza and Cesareo Marquez and jockey Edwin Rivera have been summarily suspended by the Pennsylvania Racing Commission after recent investigations found the three to be in possession of contraband. The trainers were found to be in possession of hypodermic needles, syringes and injectable substances, while Rivera was caught with an electrical device.

According to a press release from the Organization of Racing Investigators, investigators from multiple jurisdictions assembled the week of Sept. 19 and conducted barn searches and stopped cars at the backstretch gates at all three of Pennsylvania's thoroughbred tracks. The effort was led by Jason Klouser, director of enforcement, Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission. The investigators came from Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Arizona, Florida and Kentucky.

The search at Parx that caught the three individuals took place on Sept. 23, the day before the running of the GI Pennsylvania Derby. The Organization of Racing Investigators dubbed the team sent to Parx the “Pennsylvania Derby Racing Integrity Team.”

“By establishing a strong presence, the Racing Integrity Teams at each site protected Thoroughbreds, ensuring that equine safety and integrity were the top priorities,” the press release read. “The investigations at Parx produced some important results, after sweeps at the gate and stable areas.”

According to the ruling posted on the Pennsylvania Racing Commission's website, a search of Penaloza's barn and tack room uncovered two loaded syringes and a needle. Under Pennsylvania rules, no person, except a commission veterinarian, racetrack veterinarian or veterinarian licensed by the commission, may possess or use a hypodermic needle, hypodermic syringe capable of accepting a needle and injectable substances of any kind, type or description on the licensed racetrack grounds, in that person's custody, control or possession.

Penaloza has been training since 2015 and has 172 winners from 1,360 starters for a winning rate of 13%. He is 15-for-107 on the year at Parx. He had a positive for dexamethosone during the 2021 Monmouth meet and received a 15-day suspension. That same year he had a positive for Methocarbamol at Parx and was fined $1,000.

According to the ruling, Marquez was found to be in possession of multiple loaded needles and syringes. Represented by attorney Alan Pincus, Marquez appeared at a hearing before the board of stewards on Sept. 26, where the ruling was affirmed.

Marquez is in his first year of training and is 3-for-73 on the year for a winning rate of 4%.

According to the commission's ruling, after his car was stopped at the backstretch gate, Rivera was found to be in possession of two electrical devices. A hearing for Rivera was held Sept. 26, but, according to the press release, he refused to testify. The press release also noted that under Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority regulations a jockey found with an electrical device faces a ban of up to 10 years.

Rivera has been riding since 2007 and has 847 career winners. He has 42 winners on the year at Parx and is in tenth place in the standings.

According to its website, the Organization of Racing Investigators, Inc. is “comprised of professionals responsible for investigations associated with professional horse racing” and its members “are employed by government, police, and regulatory entities as well as private security firms and racetracks.” The description on the website continues: “ORI members actively investigate race fixing, horse doping, animal abuse, drug abuse, money laundering, cyber crime, fraud, conspiracy, and a host of other infractions of the laws and rules that govern professional horse racing and pari-mutuel activity. ORI members assist with the most expansive and aggressive drug testing program in professional sports, conduct background investigations, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies at all levels of government.”

King Charles III’s First Runner To Race At Salisbury On Thursday

Educator (GB) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), trained by William Haggas, will be the first runner for The King at Salisbury on Thursday, Sept. 29. Previously His Majesty had runners in the colours he shared with the Queen Consort when they were the Prince Of Wales and the Duchess Of Cornwall, respectively. However, Thursday will be the first time the royal colours will take to the racecourse in his name. Educator was one of two horses who galloped up Warren Hill in the royal silks as a tribute to the monarch at Newmarket's Open Weekend earlier this month. He will start in the Radcliffe & Co. H.

Tom Marquand, who will ride the 3-year-old, told Sky Sports Racing, “Having ridden for The Queen they will remain some of the proudest moments of my career for the entirety of it. Riding the first runner [for the King] is a moment to cherish as well.

“Educator is a lovely horse, he's shown a bit of character at home and he thankfully got his head in front at Newmarket at the start of the season.

“He's obviously an important runner, it will be a sad day and a happy day at the same time.”

Added British Horseracing Authority Chair Joe Saumarez Smith, “The loss of Her late Majesty was keenly felt within the racing and breeding industries given her lifelong passion for the sport, and so we are naturally thrilled to see that the horses previously owned by her will race on in the ownership of His Majesty King Charles III.

“Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II left an indelible mark on our sport and her legacy will continue to be felt, not only through the horses that will continue to run in the name of King Charles III, but also those she bred who are yet to be seen on the racecourse in the years to come.

“We wish Educator and King Charles III the very best of luck on Thursday and keenly look forward to further successes in those famous royal silks on British racecourses.”

Grade 2 Winner Eurosilver Dies In Korea At Age 21

Eurosilver, a Grade 2 winner and veteran sire, died on Sept. 13, per Korea Racing Authority records. He was 21.

The son of Unbridled's Song had stood in Korea since the 2015 breeding season, arriving in the county the previous summer.

A Kentucky homebred for Buckram Oak Farm, out of the stakes-winning Nijinsky II mare Russian Tango, Eurosilver was a quick-starting juvenile. He broke his maiden in his second career start at Saratoga Race Course, and parlayed that into a mild 11-1 upset victory in the Grade 2 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

Eurosilver won a Gulfstream Park allowance in his 3-year-old bow, then finished second in the G3 Swale Stakes at the same track.

Following seven months away from the track, Eurosilver was moved from the barn of trainer Nick Zito to Carl Nafzger's shedrow, and he finished second in the Perryville Stakes at Keeneland in his first start for his new conditioner.

During his 4-year-old campaign, Eurosilver won the G3 Skip Away Handicap at Gulfstream Park, and he finished second in the G1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs. His final start came in that season's G1 Whitney Handicap, where he finished sixth and came out of the race with a hairline fracture in his left hind leg that led to his retirement. He finished his career with four wins in 12 starts for earnings of $622,310.

Eurosilver retired to Dromoland Farm in Lexington, Ky., for the 2006 breeding season. In 2011, he was moved to Penn Ridge Farm in Harrisburg, Pa., where he resided until the end of the 2015 breeding season, when he was sold to stand in Korea.

From 13 crops of racing age, Eurosilver has sired 202 winners and amassed combined progeny earnings of more than $12.1 million.

His top North American-born runners include Grade 3 winner Neversaidiwassweet, multiple stakes winners Silver Sashay, Euro Platinum, Wild Jacob. He's also the sire of Grade 3-placed stakes winner Will's Wildcat.

The stallion became a desired target for the Korean breeding program following the success of Gippeumnuri, a U.S.-born filly who was exported to Korea prior to her racing career. She earned that country's champion 2-year-old filly honors in 2009.

Eurosilver currently sits in 31st among Korea's leading general sires in 2022. His best finish on the country's general sire list was 23rd place in 2020.

Eurosilver's most active breeding season in Korea was his debut in 2015, when he covered 64 mares. His numbers gradually declined each year after that, save for a fifth-season spike in 2019 when he was visited by 30 mares. In 2021, he covered three mares.
