Speaking Scout, Encourage Top Saturday’s Hawthorne Derby

A competitive field of nine was drawn on Monday for the $100,000 Hawthorne Derby, presented by BetMakers. The 52nd running of the Hawthorne Derby will take place as race seven on Saturday at 1 1/8 miles on the Hawthorne turf course.

The very evenly matched field is led by Speaking Scout, from the barn of Graham Motion. Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Speaking Scout comes into the Hawthorne Derby as one of the more seasoned runners, making 11 career starts. Racing primarily on the turf in 2022, Speaking Scout followed up a sixth-place finish in the Grade 3 Kitten's Joy at Gulfstream in February with an allowance score over the Keeneland turf in April. That victory was followed by four consecutive turf stakes efforts. Speaking Scout finished a good fourth in the Grade 3 Kent at Delaware on July 2, followed by a fourth-place finish in the Bald Eagle Derby at Laurel on August 6. His most recent race came in the Dueling Grounds Derby on September 5, a race where he was only a length off the lead mid-stretch before tiring late. Speaking Scout is the 3-1 morning line favorite in the Hawthorne Derby and will be ridden by Jareth Loveberry.

Second-choice at 7-2 is Encourage from the barn of Kenny McPeek. Owned by Stephen Baker, the move to the turf has brought out a different racehorse in 2022. After three juvenile starts on the main track that produced no better than a fourth-place finish, Encourage was away from the races for eight months before returning on August 12. In that maiden race at Ellis Park, Encourage settled mid-pack early before rallying late to win by a head. He returned three weeks later at Kentucky Downs, producing a big performance in a turf allowance, again resulting in a head victory. Chris Emigh rides Encourage on Saturday.

Another horse that has been fantastic since moving to the turf is American Mayhem for owner Doubledown Stables, Inc. and trainer James DiVito. Debuting this May, American Mayhem made three starts on the Churchill Downs dirt before moving to the turf. He rallied from the back of the pack to break his maiden on July 24 at Ellis Park and followed that victory with an allowance score at Ellis on August 26. He tried stakes-company in his most recent start, finishing third in the Gun Runner Stakes as the favorite. Orlando Mojica gets the call on the 4-1 third choice.

Trainer Mike Maker sends a pair out in the Hawthorne Derby with 6-1 Wicked Genius and 8-1 Camp David. Owned by Paradise Farms Corp. & David Staudacher, Wicked Genius was claimed into the Maker barn on April 14 for $50,000 off a sixth-place effort at Keeneland. In his next start, he shifted to the turf at Churchill and was a winner when in for a $75,000 tag. He followed that race with another turf score, this time at Kentucky Downs against Starter-company on September 1. Jose Lopez rides Wicked Genius. Camp David draws the rail for owner Three Diamonds Farm. After a maiden victory to close out his two-year-old season last October at Keeneland, Camp David made his first three-year-old start at Horseshoe Indianapolis on May 17, winning a dirt allowance. After a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Matt Winn on June 12, Camp David chased the pace before tiring in his most recent start in the Gun Runner at Kentucky Downs.

Hugh Robertson also has a pair in the Hawthorne Derby with Xavey Dave and Tonka Warrior. The Minnesota-bred Xavey Dave is owned by the Estate of Warren L. Bush. Spending the winter in New Orleans, Xavey Dave won a Fair Grounds turf allowance on March 25. After a fourth-place effort in a Keenland turf allowance in April, Xavey Dave spent the summer at Canterbury Park. He made four stakes starts at Canterbury, most recently finishing second in the Blair's Cove on September 10. Eduardo Gallardo rode Xavey Dave in that race and rides again on Saturday. Tonka Warrior enters the Hawthorne Derby with three victories from seven career starts. After finishing third in his debut at Oaklawn on April 23, Tonka Warrior also spent the summer at Canterbury, breaking his maiden and winning a pair of allowance races, one of those coming on the turf. Victor Santiago rides Tonka Warrior for owner Xtreme Racing Stables, LLC.

Bens Malice enters the Hawthorne Derby as the most seasoned horse, making 13 starts and winning three races. Owned by Pete Mattson and trained by Tim Padilla, Bens Malice has made nine starts on the turf, finishing first or second in seven of those nine races. Along with a pair of allowance wins on the turf, Bens Malice finished second in the Columbia Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on March 12. He also posted a runner-up effort in the Mystic Lake Derby on June 22 and finished third in the Minnesota Derby on August 13 at Canterbury. Regular rider Alonso Quinonez is in to ride Bens Malice.

Protonic Power races for owner Antonio Donato and Armando Hernandez. After posting a couple of early season wins at Gulfstream Park, Protonic Power was claimed for $16,000 at Ellis on July 17 and then claimed again for $30,000 two weeks later at Ellis. His most recent performance was a third-place effort at Horseshoe Indianapolis on September 14 in an allowance race that was taken off the turf. Javier Tavares rides in the Hawthorne Derby.

Hawthorne Race Course, Chicago's Hometown Track, races year-round in 2022. The winter harness season concluded on Sunday, March 20. Spring thoroughbreds kicked off Saturday, April 2 and concluded Saturday, June 25. The summer harness season began on Thursday, June 30 and raced through Sunday, September 11. Fall thoroughbreds returned on Friday, September 23 and race through Saturday, December 31. For any information about Hawthorne Race Course visit our website www.HawthorneRaceCourse.com.

Undefeated Baaeed Star Attraction On Oct. 15 British Champions Day

Baaeed, the best horse in the world on turf, is set to bring the curtain down on his exceptional career at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day on Saturday, Oct. 15, after the latest set of entries for Britain's richest raceday were revealed Tuesday.

The 4-year-old, who is unbeaten in a ten-race career, will retire to stud after he contests the £1.3 million race over 10 furlongs, ten years after Frankel bowed out with victory in the 2012 QIPCO Champion Stakes with a record of 14 wins out of 14.

After Tuesday's scratching stage for the QIPCO Champion Stakes, the Shadwell Estate Company-owned Baaeed is one of 21 horses who remain engaged in the richest race at Britain's richest raceday, whetting the appetite for what connections hope will be a special send-off.

“It's going to be a big day for the horse, Sheikha Hissa, all of us, for everybody,” said Angus Gold, Shadwell's racing manager. “Horses like this don't come around very often. The main thing is to check we get him there in one piece.

“We have three weeks to go and at this time of the year things can change quickly, with the seasons changing and with horses that have been on the go a fair while, so we are not taking anything for granted.”

Among Baaeed's intended QIPCO Champion Stakes opponents will be Adayar, the 2021 Cazoo Derby winner who finished fifth in the race last year, in what is set to be one of the races of the season. It was announced Tuesday morning via Godolphin's Twitter page that 'Adayar will miss the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and will instead head to the (QIPCO) Champion Stakes at Ascot, where conditions are likely to suit him better.'

Also still engaged in the race are Sealiway and Addeybb, the last two winners of the race, Irish Champion Stakes winner Luxembourg, Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse Stakes winner Vadeni, Prix de Diane and Nassau Stakes winner Nashwa, and Tuesday, victorious in the Oaks.

Since beating Palace Pier in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO) on QIPCO British Champions Day last year, Baaeed has followed the same four-year-old programme as Frankel, winning the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and the Juddmonte International at York, his first race beyond a mile in which he produced a stunning performance to beat Mishriff by six and a half lengths

“To me the Juddmonte International showed him at his best,” said Gold. “It was his best performance and on his pedigree that was exactly what he should be doing. I hope we can get him to Ascot in the best possible shape on ground that's not too bad then we will hope for a bit of luck.

“The lovely thing about horses like this is how they attract the public so people can get to see these good horses.

“It would be fantastic if he could retire unbeaten. Not many do and we all know who the last great one was to do so [Frankel] and it would be fantastic to emulate him. I don't mean that in terms of saying he is as good as Frankel, but to retire unbeaten would be brilliant.

“Baaeed is an exceptional horse. He has been very well trained and managed by William and his team. We have been lucky to have him for a couple of seasons and hope he can go out on a good note.”

Coronation Stakes and Prix Jacques Le Marois winner Inspiral heads the 19 horses remaining in the £1.1 million Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO), while defending champion Eshaada is included among 28 in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares, as well as last year's Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant.

There are 28 remaining in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes while Trueshan is on target to bid for an unprecedented third success in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup, hoping to become the first horse to win races at three separate QIPCO British Champions Days.

He is one of 23 left in the 2m race which also features Kyprios, this year's Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and Irish St Leger winner as well as the three-year-old Eldar Eldarov, who won the Cazoo St Leger last month to provide jockey David Egan a first British Classic success.

Foal Adventure Launches, Focused On Breeding Partnerships, Education

With the growth of companies that offer racing fans an affordable way to experience racehorse ownership, Foal Adventure is on a mission to welcome them to the exciting world of breeding.

Focused on ensuring members experience the excitement of breeding and raising a foal, Foal Adventure provides regular updates to the members, including photos, a monthly webinar, farm tours, and the opportunity to connect at the sales. Ultimately the members will get the thrill of a lifetime watching the foals turn into racehorses and compete at racetracks across the country.

“Last year, I was very excited to share pictures of my foal, and I sent the photos to my friends and family. Soon the requests for updates started rolling in, and before long, I was producing a regular newsletter to an ever-growing audience. When I learned Foal Patrol was sunsetting, I knew I had to expand on what I had been doing and make it available to everyone.” Iain Holmes, the co-founder of Foal Patrol, shared. “I approached industry veteran Sean Feld, knowing that together we will be able to provide our members with a unique experience – producing high quality horses the members will be able to watch grow up, go through the sales ring and ultimately compete at the track.”

Feld explained, “when Iain pitched the idea to me, I could not say yes quick enough. With foal crops shrinking at an alarming rate, we can't just focus on introducing fans to racing. We need to introduce them to breeding too. With the regional awards, a strong market, and the cost of keeping a broodmare and raising a foal considerably lower than having a horse in training, we are confident some of our members will go out on their own and help grow the industry.”

Foal Adventure currently has two mares available: Magic Happens, whose female family includes broodmare of the year Levee, dam of Hall of Famer Shuvee; and Lulu's Partner, a half-sister to Disco Partner. More information is available at: www.FoalAdventure.com
