Grade 1 Winner, Veteran Sire Gayego Dies At Age 17

Gayego, a Grade 1 winner and veteran stallion that ran in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, died due to complications from colic, Bar None Ranches announced Wednesday. He was 17.

The son of Gilded Time stood his entire career in Canada, debuting at Norse Ridge Farm in Ontario for the 2012 breeding season, and moving to Bar None Ranches in Alberta the following year. He stood there for the rest of his life.

Bred in Kentucky by Hargus and Sandra Sexton, Gayego began his career in the barn of Paulo Lobo for owner Cubanacan Stables. He picked up his first stakes victory in his 3-year-old bow, taking the listed San Pedro Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Gayego then entered the Triple Crown scene with a runner-up effort in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, and a road trip to win the G1 Arkansas Derby. He entered the 2008 Kentucky Derby as a middle-priced prospect, and he finished 17th after a sluggish start and rank behavior through the races early goings. He came back two weeks later for the Preakness Stakes, where he finished 11th.

In the fall of his 3-year-old season, Gayego set a track record for 6 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park, winning an optional claiming race in 1:13.37.

Trainer A.C. Avila purchased the horse shortly after his record-setting performance, and he quickly sold him to the Godolphin operation, who sent him to run in the U.A.E. He won his first international start, and his 4-year-old debut, in the G2 Dayjur Mahab Al Shimaal, then he finished second in the G1 Godolphin Mile.

Gayego then returned stateside for the remainder of his 2009 campaign, which started with an optional claiming victory in Saratoga, followed by the G1 Ancient Title Stakes. He finished the season with a fourth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park.

Whether in the U.S. or U.A.E., Gayego was trained by Saeed bin Suroor.

At five, Gayego began his season once again in the U.A.E., and then returned in the U.S., where his season was highlighted by a victory in the listed Presque Isle Mile Stakes, followed by a third in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs. He returned to the U.A.E. for one final start at age six before his retirement.

Gayego retired with eight wins in 25 starts for earnings of $1,751,120.

At stud, Gayego has been responsible for eight crops of racing age, with 44 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $1.2 million. His top runners include multiple stakes winners Bar No Q, Doc Ross, and Ma's Miracle Run.

A social media statement from Bar None Ranches read as follows:

“He enjoyed racing his sire Gilded Time up and down the long fence lines when he arrived, never one to turn down a challenge or an opportunity to show off. In later years, because of his excellent, quiet temperament he was able to live by 'his mares,' enjoying his post watching the daily activities of the broodmare pens and socializing with anyone who'd stop in for a visit.

“His foals were known for their quiet, bidable personalities and reflected his large, kind eye and considerable size…The big black stallion with a heart of gold will be missed greatly by (breeding manager Shaun Rathy) and her team, as well as anyone who had the fortune of having met him.”

Suggesting you bet the AL over the NL would be an understatement!

From the first time I stepped in Tiger Stadium in the 60’s I have been a diehard American league fan and these days that is a real good thing, from a sports betting perspective. Through last night’s games the AL is a remarkable 127-75 (62.8%) which with the exception of the Tigers and White Sox would be the best record in baseball.

The White Sox and the Red Sox are a ridiculous 25-3, Tampa 10-5 and even the pathetic Royals are 8-7. On the flip side if you like betting on Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Arizona, you would be in serious trouble as their combined record is an astonishing 5-29.

Here’s some more juicy numbers to digest! The AL has won eight straight World Series games, is 7-3 in the last 10 series and has not lost an All Star game in 9 years.

Changing managers in Pittsburgh has accomplished zip and residents of the Steel City are fortunate that they have Bill Cowher and the Steelers. The Buckaroos have now lost 13 straight, are winless for more than two weeks and broke the modern-era (since 1900) club record of 12 straight losses set in 1939. The only longer losing streak in Pittsburgh’s major league history was a 23-game slide by the Alleghenies in 1890.

Until the current streak — one that has all but assured them of a 14th consecutive losing season — the Pirates had not lost more than 10 in a row in 38 years or more than 11 in a row in 51 years. Their current 13-year streak of losing seasons is the longest in the majors and three short of the Phillies’ major league record.

White Sox general manager Kenny Williams may not be impressed with his manager Ozzie Guillan’s actions but we live in a results orientated society and the Wizard gets the job done. The World Series champions won their 11th in 12 games and 13th in 15 games. They are 12-2 in interleague play and have won their last eight series since dropping two of three to the Rangers from June 2-4.

One positive note with the exception of the Mets from the NL is the gutsy play of the San Francisco Giants who are just two games back in the crazy NL West. Their starting staff is just 39-38 and their team batting average just .260 but hey have been getting timely hits like last nights grand slam by Ray Durham.

Boppy O Gives Freshman Sire Bolt d’Oro First Graded Stakes Win In With Anticipation

Jockey Dylan Davis secured his first graded win at Saratoga Race Course when John C. Oxley and Breeze Easy's Boppy O staved off a late bid from Battle of Normandy to capture Wednesday's Grade 3, $175,000 With Anticipation in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, the Bolt d'Oro colt made his grass debut in the 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for juveniles from an off-the-board effort in the six-furlong Grade 3 Sanford on July 16 at the Spa.

Maiden winner El Conejito led the field of seven through splits of 24.93 seconds and 50.09 over the good going with Boppy O tracking in second position in front of the stalking 2-1 mutuel favorite Andthewinneris.

Boppy O continued to track the speed down the backstretch with Andthewinneris comfortably gapped in third in front of Battle of Normandy, who was racing in fourth position to the inside of the Casse-trained maiden Determinedly. Boppy O took over midway through the final turn with three-quarters elapsing in 1:15.65 as Battle of Normandy advanced in tandem with Determinedly.

The Kendrick Carmouche-piloted Battle of Normandy was full of run down the lane under pressure from a lugging-in Determinedly and in need of racing room behind a drifting Andthewinneris. Battle of Normandy surged to the inside of Andthewinneris with a sixteenth to run and angled to the outside of the leader for one last push, falling a neck shy of a determined Boppy O in a final time of 1:46.93.

It was a further 1 1/2-lengths back to Andthewinneris in third with Determinedly, Noble Huntsman, Our Dream Rye'd – who was squeezed at the start – and El Conejito completing the order of finish. Bourbon Therapy and Bramble Blaze – who are cross-entered in Saturday's Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile – were scratched, as were Quincy Cafe and Lachaise.

Boppy O, out of the graded-stakes placed on turf Scat Daddy mare Pappascat, is a half-brother to the Casse-conditioned graded-stakes winner Pappacap. A $190,000 purchase at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Boppy O graduated on debut in May at Gulfstream Park in a five-furlong maiden special weight sprint.

Casse said Boppy O, who provided his sire a first graded winner, performed well in two breezes over the Oklahoma training turf.

“My feeling is that Bolt d'Oro, a lot of them are going to be grass horses,” said Casse, who won this event last year with the New York-bred Coinage. “So it was about the grass, but it was also [that] I wanted to run him farther. I had thought about running him in the Sapling [on August 27 at Monmouth Park], just because it was two turns at Monmouth. But then I said, 'You know, I'm going to breeze this horse over the grass.' I thought he breezed good enough on the grass that he deserved a shot. I'm happy, but I'm not shocked.”

Davis, who teamed up with Casse to capture the De La Rose [Our Flash Drive] and Yaddo Handicap [Make Mischief] this summer at the Spa, said he felt confident throughout.

“Going into this, he was showing high energy levels from last time. He was really coming into the race really nicely,” Davis said. “He broke real sharp. I could've taken the lead, but I wanted him to get his stride comfortable going into the first turn. The five [El Conejito] went in. He was loving every part of it. I took the lead early, but he was doing it so comfortable and any challenger that came up to him late, he was putting them away. He was still a little green and spotty, but he still had a lot left in the tank. He was moving really nicely.”

Carmouche said Battle of Normandy, by City of Light and out of the multiple stakes winner Adorable Miss, performed well in his stakes debut following an impressive maiden score on August 6 at the Spa.

“I had a perfect trip, I sat inside the whole way. I was just waiting for a spot at the top of the lane to open,” Carmouche said. “I wish I could've gotten out a little earlier to get his feet moving faster, but I had to save ground and angle out at the three-sixteenths. I thought he ran even better than last time.

“He's improving every start which is good, I just hope that he stays sound and keeps moving forward,” Carmouche added. “Hopefully next time it'll be the Breeders' Cup win.”

Casse indicated Boppy O will make his next start in the Grade 2 Bourbon on October 9 traveling 1 1/16 miles over the turf at Keeneland. Bred in Florida by Rustlewood Farm, Boppy O banked $96,250 in victory while improving his record to 3-2-0-0. He returned $48.20 for a $2 win bet.
