A Winning Comeback: Lieutenant Dan Scores Repeat In Green Flash, Earns Return Berth To Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

Nick Alexander's homebred Lieutenant Dan waited and waited for room on the home turn in the Green Flash Handicap (G3) Sunday at Del Mar, then fired big when the rail came open and slipped through to win his second consecutive edition of the turf stakes.

The 6-year-old gelding by his owner's home stallion Grazen clicked by 1 1/14 lengths to earn a first prize of $90,000 from the $152,500 purse in the five-furlong test, his first start from a long layoff. Additionally, he earned an automatic, fees-paid berth to the $1-million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) in November at Keeneland via the Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win and You're In” series.

Ten months ago, Lieutenant Dan finished second to Golden Pal in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar; this year's Green Flash marked his first start since that race and he showed no signs of rust in handling his nine rivals.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez for trainer Steve Miyadi, Lieutenant Dan finished the trip in :55.87.

“He's a really nice horse,” Hernandez said. “He broke really well and I didn't bother him because he took me there and I saw a couple horse with more speed than me so I just sat behind them and waited inside. When we turn the corner, there was a little space for me, and we got there. He has a really nice kick inside, really professional. I shook the reins a little bit and he picked it up.”

Finishing second Lane Way, who had a head on Coulthard.

Lieutenant Dan's victory Sunday pushed his lifetime bankroll up to $923,740. It was his ninth tally in his 18th start. It also was Hernandez's 10th stakes score at the current Del Mar meeting, making him the leader in that department after 27 days of racing.

Lieutenant Dan, the 9-10 favorite in the dash despite the lengthy layoff, returned $3.80.

“He's not as quick as last year, but he has a new rider and that's Juan's nature,” Miyadi said of Lieutenant Dan, who captured last year's edition of the Green Flash by 2 1/4 lengths. “If he sees a speed duel developing he likes to wait. He got to the inside and we were lucky it opened up. It wasn't at all like we thought, but he switched leads on cue and kept going.”

Trainers Bob Baffert and Doug O'Neill won a pair or races on the afternoon card giving each of them 17 for the session, which means they're co-leaders in the top of the contentious conditioners' category. The meet has four days of racing remaining.

Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Making Money On A Makeup Day

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs is underway, featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report's Longshot Look will help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Monday's makeup card for Sunday's rained-out races, J.D. will focus on a horse in Race 1, a 6 1/2-furlong claiming race. His pick has some back class at Kentucky Downs that could come in handy during his return visit.

J.D.'s “Scratch Saver” pick comes in Race 4, a 1 5/16-mile allowance, where he'll have his eye on #10 Setna the Wise.

This is an easier spot than his previous start in an optional claiming race at Saratoga, where this horse finished second going 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Senta the Wise should benefit from extra distance, and has ran twice on Good rated courses and held his own.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.

Take The ‘Free Card’ at Low Limit Holdem

Certain advanced poker strategies used by pros have been well written upon, but many players seem to forget the exact poker situations described and tend to use certain tactics in the wrong game. The ‘free card’ poker play in Holdem is a perfect example of a strategy that should be used more often in a loose passive low limit game and less in tournaments or no-limit sessions.

The ‘free card’ poker play in Holdem is when a late position player bets or raises on the flop with a drawing hand in an attempt to show strength and to get the other players to check after the turn card is dealt. If the strategy works, the player then has the option of not putting any more bets in the pot on the next ‘free’ card (which is ideal when on a draw that needs to hit to win).

Low limit Holdem games are categorized as ‘show down’ games since many players will stay in the hand until the river and showdown. Straight forward play works better at these tables as most opponents won’t be paying attention to your extra aggression or attemts at trickery. If players are likely to bet into you regardless of your play on previous betting rounds, raising in hopes of getting a cheap or free card will obviously not work. Since betting with a draw only has value when opponents will actually fold on occasion or as a strategy to get them to check to you, the semi-bluff should be attempted less often in loose games and checking in turn with hopes to hit your draw is suggested.

In tournaments where players are considering their stack size and survival, along with no-limit games where bluffs can be more successful, bets on a draw can be carried through with much more success and results. Many one-pair hands will fold when facing pot-sized bets or bigger and the likelyhood that your foes will muck hands like these should always carry weight when considering if you should wait to hit your draw or fire again in hopes to win immediately.

Concept Example : You raise with AsKs in late position after four players entered the pot, the big blind and the other four limpers call, so 6 of you see the flop for two bets each. The flop comes down 6c, 8s, Qd. It is checked to you, you bet and get 3 callers. The turn is the 2c.

With this type of board a tournament player will often consider making another big bet after the turn card. You can win by eventually hitting your outs or by getting the others to fold their hands. At the low limit tables however, checking is the suggested play since players will likely call down with any pair to the end in a pot that size when facing cheap limit bets.

Lieutenant Dan, runner-up in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, punched his ticket for the 2022 renewal in his first start since, successfully defending his title in the GIII Green Flash H. Sunday at Del Mar.

A winner of two California-bred stakes in 2019, the gelding added a third in the Sensational Star S. in March of 2020, then headed to the bench for over 13 months following a runner-up effort in the Crystal Water S. Returning with a local allowance/optional claiming success last July, he repeated in the Green Flash and added a score in the GII Eddie D S. at Santa Anita before running second to Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) over this course in the Breeders' Cup.

Backed to odds-on here, Lieutenant Dan found a perfect spot in third at the rail, drafting behind second choice Dubai Key (Arg) (Key Deputy) as that rival clicked off a :21.77 quarter. Well held by Juan Hernandez on the turn, the chalk found an inside seam straightening for home as Dubai Key came off the fence, swept to the front at the eighth pole and kicked clear under hands and heels for the victory. Lane Way won a photo for the place.

Pedigree Notes:

One of 16 stakes winners and four graded stakes winners for stalwart California sire Grazen, Lieutenant Dan is the lone black-type performer from eight foals to race thus far out of his stakes-winning dam. He has a yearling full-brother named Butch O'Hare.
