The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Flightline’s Place In History

“This definitely qualifies as three old farts sitting around the campfire.”

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, spurred on by Flightline's 19 1/4-length victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Sept. 3, Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick is joined by award-winning Turf writers Jay Hovdey (who coined the campfire comment) and Tim Wilkin to try and put some perspective on the John Sadler-trained Tapit colt's historic performance at Del Mar.

Hovdey, from Southern California, is a 2012 inductee to the Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Wilkin, honored with the Walter Haight Award from the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters in 2019, began covering the Saratoga race meet for upstate New York newspapers in 1980. Both have seen countless champions and breakout performances over the years.

“Anybody that watched that race whose jaw didn't drop to the floor watched the wrong race,” Wilkin commented. “Now the debate starts. Where is this horse in the all-time list?”

While Wilkin wants to see more racing from Flightline before putting him with the greatest horses ever, Hovdey suggests that the modern era may require us to look at a Thoroughbred's body of work differently than before.

“This is a horse who requires almost a confluence of the head and the heart to appreciate,” Hovdey said, “because from all angles he is doing things that only the greatest racehorses can do and he's doing them in a context that doesn't really satisfy traditional values.”

Jimmy Creed’s Private Creed Upsets Sharp Aza Tack In Global Tote Juvenile Sprint S.

After breaking his maiden on debut at Ellis Park July 30, Private Creed shipped to Saratoga to contest the Skidmore S., checking in third just two lengths behind winner Oxymore (Astern {Aus}). Back in Kentucky, the 5-2 second choice behind overwhelming favorite Sharp Aza Tack, racing with blinkers for the first time, utilized a similar racing style from his first two starts–tracking in third behind pacesetter Revere Note (Revolutionary) with the favorite racing between them. Tipped to the inside of his rival past the quarter pole, Private Creed engaged Sharp Aza Tack into the final sixteenth and got the better of him close to home for the three-quarter length upset.

“The one horse (Sharp Aza Tack) had so much speed,” said winning jockey Joel Rosario. “My horse was comfortable, he was happy where he was. He settled nicely going into the turn. For a second, I didn't know, as it took him a little time to get going. He just found another gear. He broke good and I was right there. Just a good trip.”

A $155,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale grad (:10.3), Private Creed has a yearling half-brother by Vino Rosso and a weanling half-brother by Complexity. South Andros was bred back to Jimmy Creed for a full-sibling to Private Creed in 2023. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Toronado Colt Shines At Arqana September

Arqana's inaugural September Yearling Sale, a replacement for the v.2 Yearling Sale, started its two-day run on Thursday, and a smart colt by the former French-based stallion Toronado (Ire) brought a session-topping bid of €120,000 from Mathieu Alex on behalf of Pauline Chehboub's SAS Yellow Agency.

Part of the Fairway Consignment draft and already named Tomokay (Fr), lot 34 is the fifth foal from his dam, the winning Hold That Tiger mare Loumaxaye (Fr). His half-brother Hayejohn (Fr), by first-season sire Johnny Barnes (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), carried all before him in the Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at Vichy after the catalogue was published.

This is also the extended family of the dual listed winner Sully (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and G1 Futurity S., G1 Queen Elizabeth S. and G1 Caulfield Cup S. heroine Aqua d'Amore (Aus) (Danehill).

Second on the buyers' sheets was lot 82, Tiger King (Fr) (Inns Of Court {Ire}). Originally a €9,500 in utero purchase by Jean-Claud Olivier out of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in 2020, the colt was re-sold one year later in that same sale for €19,000 to Six of Us. Offered by Haras de Grandcamp on Thursday, the February-foaled colt was snapped up for €85,000 by John Hassett of The Bloodstock Connection for GET IN THE GAME. Out of the listed-placed Pink Cloud (Fr) (Octagonal {NZ}), his dam is a half-sister to two-time listed winner Pink Gin (Fr) (Kouroun {Fr}), as well as the stakes-placed Pink Anabella (Fr) (Anabaa).

John Hassett said, “He's a magnificent colt, that comes from a good stud. I'm very pleased with this purchase. It's possible that he might come back to Deauville for the Breeze Up next May, but nothing is decided yet.”

Hassett had struck for a colt by Shalaa (Ire) earlier in the day, when shelling out €68,000 for lot 71 as JCH Bloodstock. Haras de Castillon consigned the bay, whose dam is a half-sister to none other than outstanding third-crop sire and dual Group 2 winner Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who was also runner up in the G1 National S. and third in the G1 Middle Park S.

John Hammond bought four on the day for owner Gerard Augustin-Normand ranging in price from €5,000 to €80,000. Leading the quartet was a colt by City Light (Fr) (lot 101) from the draft of Haras d'Aspel. His dam is a half-sister to the stakes winner and stakes producer Rioticism (Fr) (Rio de la Plata), responsible for three-time stakes winner and G3 Round Tower S. third Ladies Church (GB) (Churchill {Ire}), while his half-brother by Birchwood graduated at Deauville this summer for Joel Boisnard. This colt will also join the Boisnard string.

Thursday's most expensive filly was a daughter of Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (lot 47). Purchased for €77,000 by Hammond from Haras de la Haie Neuve, the well-bred miss is from the same family as Group 1 winner Sequoyah (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the dam of dual Classic winner Henrythenavigator (Kingmambo), and the Classic-placed Group 3 winner Queen Cleopatra (Ire) (Kingmambo); while Sequoyah's half-sister Listen (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) took the G1 Fillies' Mile and was runner-up in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. Carrying this filly, her dam brought €55,000 from Narvick International at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in 2020.

“She's a lovely filly, that is very like her sire,” said Hammond. “I really like her physique and she has a lot of strength. We'll decide on her future at a later date.”

At the end of the day, 101 yearlings (71.6%) had sold from 141 offered. The gross was a respectable €2,113,000. The average was €20,921 and the median settled at €15,000.

The sale continues Friday at 2 p.m.

All American Futurity Favorite Was Scratched For Nebulizer Treatment On Race Day

Owner-trainer Carl Moore's Jes An Angel, who recorded the fastest time trial and was the morning line favorite for the $3 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico on Sept. 5, was scratched from Quarter Horse racing's marquee event by order of the stewards on the morning of the race after she was observed allegedly being treated with a nebulizer.

Izzy Trejo, executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, said the state's administrative code prohibits race day use of a “nebulizer or similar device used to administer a drug or other substance.”

Trejo said the treatment was observed by an enforcement team from the American Quarter Horse Association on hand for the All American. “We had the luxury of having boots on the ground, which is necessary for this kind of thing to be found,” Trejo said. “They were making their rounds around seven in the morning when they came upon the horse.”

Moore purchased Jes An Angel for $10,000 at the 2021 Heritage Place September Yearling Sale in Oklahoma and paid $50,000 to supplement the daughter of Jess Zoomin to the All American Futurity. Jes An Angel had won five of seven starts, including her Aug. 19 All American trial in which she ran the 440 yards on a sloppy track in 21.257 seconds. Scheduled to break from the number eight post position, Jes An Angel had been installed the 5-2 morning line favorite in the finals.

A Facebook post purported to be from Moore said “politics kept us from running.” Moore said he had purchased a nebulizer and saline solution from a veterinarian at the track and “we had been administering it for over a month every day. We administered it the morning of the race which they say is not allowed the morning of the race however when you read the rule this is not clear. We take full responsibility in  using the saline solution on race day but they pounced on it giving them the opportunity they had been waiting on to keep her from running the race.”

Trejo said the rule is clear.

“We expect people to understand what the rules are,” Trejo said, “especially when you are running for $3 million.”

Trejo said a hearing would be scheduled on the matter.

Moore said he will point Jes An Angel to the Dash for Cash Futurity Trials on Sept. 16 at Lone Star Park.
