Highfield Princess, Unbeaten Meditate Headline Pair Of ‘Win And You’re In’ Stakes Sunday At The Curragh

Highfield Princess heads a field of 19 declared for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Flying Five Stakes (G1), one of two “Win and You're In” races Sunday, the final day of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend at the Curragh.

The Flying Five Stakes offers an automatic starting position into the $1-million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1), while the winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) earns a free spot into the $1- million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) both in November at Keeneland.

The Trainers House Enterprises Limited-owned 5-year-old Highfield Princess, who has already secured an automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint having won another Challenge Series race, the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at York in her most recent start, is chasing a hat-trick of wins in Group 1 company having also won the Arc Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) at Deauville on August 7.

The daughter of Night Of Thunder has shown a phenomenal rate of improvement over the last two years, and trainer John Quinn is in no doubt about the esteem he holds his stable star in.

“This is the best horse we've ever had,” Quinn said. “We've been lucky to have top-class Flat horses and a few top-class jumpers as well, but she's the best. She's a phenomenal filly. These Group 1 races, they're hard races to win and the rain is after coming and there are a few horses in there that will appreciate the ease in the ground. We just want to get her down to the start on Sunday and take it from there.”

Other contenders include Clipper Logistics Group-owned Romantic Proposal, who won last year's renewal of this race by a half-length. She has won six of her 20 career starts for trainer Edward Lynam and is a three-time course winner at The Curragh.

The 6-year-old mare beat two-time Group 1 winner A Case Of You when successful in this contest 12 months ago, and the stars are set to renew the rivalry once again.

A Case Of You, trained by Adrian McGuinness, hasn't been seen since finishing 17th at Royal Ascot in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes (G1) but had previously finished third behind Brad The Brief (GB) over this course and distance in the Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (G2) and earlier in the year won the Al Quoz Sprint (G1) at Meydan, Dubai.

The improving Mark Dobbin-owned Ladies Church beat Mooniesta by a short-head in the Barberstown Castle Sapphire Stakes (G2) over this course and distance last time out, on July 16. The race also featured Castle Star, Brostaigh, Geocentric, and New York City, who all line up on Sunday.

The other British-trained contenders include The Horse Watchers-owned Raasel, who defeated Dragon Symbol in the Betfred Nifty Fifty Achilles Stakes (listed) at Haydock in May. Meanwhile, Group 3 winner Flotus has been declared for Simon and Ed Crisford along with the Clive Cox-trained Caturra, who finished a fine third behind Khaadem in the King George Qatar Stakes (G3) at Glorious Goodwood.

Meditate Looking to Stretch Perfect Record in Moyglare Stud Stakes

The exciting Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, and Westerberg-owned Meditate will face 11 rivals in her bid to secure a first career Group 1 success in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) on Sunday. The winner of this race, run at seven furlongs, will earn an automatic starting position and fees paid into this year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

The daughter of No Nay Never has won each of her four career starts impressively, including the Albany Stakes (G3) at Royal Ascot, where she beat Sydneyarms Chelsea, and the Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes (G2) where Thornbrook and Gan Teorainn were among her rivals.

Her trainer, Aidan O'Brien, is also bidding to reach a milestone of his own and register a record 10th win in this race. No trainer has won more renewals of the contest, and he is doubly represented here, with Group 3 winner Never Ending Story also lining up.

The main danger to the Ballydoyle contingent may come from His Highness the Aga Khan's once-raced 5 ½-length maiden winner Tahiyra. Trainer Dermot Weld hasn't won this race since 1987 when he trained Flutter Away to win for Oliver Murphy.

There hasn't been an English-trained winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes since 2014, and while Sydneyarms Chelsea, trained in Lambourn by Charles Hills, will try and reverse form over Meditate, the Gallop Racing-owned Lakota Sioux will also make the trip over from for Charlie & Mark Johnston. The daughter of Sioux Nation won the Jewson Sweet Solera Stakes (G3) by three-quarters of a length last time out.

Shelton and Eternal Silence were second and third, respectively, in the Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF Stakes (G3) last time over 1 mile at this track, a race which also featured La Dolce Vita.

The 12-runner field is completed by Amazing Show, the mount of Ireland's champion jockey Colin Keane, and Papilio, runner-up in a listed race at Tipperary last time out.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winners of the Challenge Series winners to start at this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships. Breeders' Cup will also provide a $40,000 travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 24 to receive the rewards.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 82 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Keeneland in Lexington on Nov. 4-5.

O’Brien Pays Tribute To “Incredibly Special” Evie Stockwell, Who Dies Aged 96

Aidan O'Brien paid a heartfelt tribute to Evie Stockwell, the mother of John Magnier and a hugely successful owner-breeder in her own right, who passed away at the age of 96.

Shortly after producing one of the greatest training performances in recent years by delivering Luxembourg at fever pitch to win the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown, O'Brien admitted that the victory was tinged in sadness with the news of Stockwell's passing.

“Mrs. Stockwell was an incredibly special person for us and everyone who knew her,” he said. “Since we came to Ballydoyle, her enthusiasm and wisdom has been a joy. We trained a lot of good fillies for her. Obviously Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) would have been the best of them but we had some marvellous days together and she was at the Curragh last year to see Glounthaune (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) win.”

Glounthaune carried Stockwell's renowned 'Madonna blue' and brown silks to finish second in the G2 Clipper Logistics Boomerang Mile on the opening day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend, after which, O'Brien recalled with fondness his relationship with Stockwell.

He added, “Glounthaune ran an unbelievable race today as he's only just back from a break. Mrs. Stockwell used to call into us at Ballydoyle regularly. She would drive herself and MV [Magnier, grandson] would always let us know that she was calling or sometimes he would come with her.

“We really enjoyed her visits. It will be an incredible loss but it was just a privilege to have known her and an honour to be able to listen and learn from her. She was an incredibly special person.”

Group/grade 1-winning War Front siblings Brave Anna and Hit It A Bomb, who between them won the G1 Cheveley Park S. and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, also carried Stockwell's colours with great distinction in recent years.

The pair were out of Group 3 winner Liscanna (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), herself a daughter of Stockwell's listed-winning mare Lahinch (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), named like several of Stockwell's horses with a golfing theme in mind.

Other good horses to carry her colours include the already mentioned Fairyland, winner of the Cheveley Park and G1 Flying Five S., Luas Line (Ire) (Danehill), who was trained by David Wachman to win the 2005 GI Garden City Breeders' Cup H. at Belmont Park, Toroca (Nureyev), who ran third in the 2001 G1 1000 Guineas and later landed an Italian Group 3, Kitza (Ire) (Danehill), who was placed in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Oaks, and Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), named after Stockwell's granddaughter Anthea who won the 2007 G3 Summer S. at York and later produced Grade I winner Photo Call (Ire) (Galileo {Ire]). She also owned listed winner We Are Ninety (Ire) (Thewayyouare) with her twin sister Lady Mimi Manton.

The Cork native wasn't born into racing but she enjoyed the sport growing up and in 1947, became fully immersed in the world when she married Tom Magnier, owner of Grange Stud in Fermoy, home of the great jumps stallion Cottage (GB) (Tracery) and 1946 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Fortina (Fr) (Formor {Fr}), the only entire to ever win the race.

Tom Magnier died in 1962 and Stockwell was left with four children–John, Peter, David and Anne–to raise.

Stockwell will be reposing at the Railway House, Farnaleen, Fethard, County Tipperary, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

The funeral will take place at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Fethard, on Monday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. followed by a private burial in Kilcrumper Old Cemetery in Fermoy. The house is strictly private on Monday.

Invincible Spirit’s Pearls Galore Makes All For Matron Glory

Second in Leopardstown's G1 Coolmore America Justify Matron S. when just running out of runway in the one-mile contest last term, Paddy Twomey trainee Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}–Pearl Banks {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) left nothing to chance in this year's renewal back at the Foxrock venue and led every step of the way this time around to secure her first victory at the highest level. The Matron victory also booked Pearls Galore's ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland in November.

Haras de Saint Pair's consistent 5-year-old mare had followed up last year's reversal with a second in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix de la Foret before bringing the curtain down on 2021 with a close-up sixth in Del Mar's GI Breeders' Cup Mile. Back in tune when annexing April's Listed Heritage S. over this course and distance on seasonal return, she added to that with a narrow score in the Curragh's G2 Lanwades Stud S. the following month, but was out of luck when second in July's G2 Minstrel S. back at the Co. Kildare track and fifth behind Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Tenebrism (Caracaggio) in Deauville's Aug. 2 G1 Prix Rothschild last time.

Sharply into stride to set the tone from flagfall, the 16-1 chance was bustled along at the top of the straight and maintained a relentless tempo under a drive inside the final quarter mile to exact revenge on her Rothschild opponents in style, hitting the line with a three-length advantage.

“The best race of her life was this race last year, she's been in good form and I said to Billy [Lee] we'd put the cheekpieces on her,” explained Twomey. “She's five years old and does what she has to do. It didn't work out for her in France [last time] where the ground was quick and it was a straight mile. This is more her jazz, ease in the ground and a turning mile. She was walking around the pre-parade ring and throwing herself around the place and I knew she was in good form. I told Billy, with the cheekpieces on, I don't think we should be taking her back and it worked. She has the ability to travel at a high pace and burn off horses. That's her true running there and I'm delighted for her.”

Ballingarry, Co. Limerick, native Lee added, “She has been very good to me. The race went nicely and, when she bounced from the gates well, I was happy to let her lead the way. She likes it here, she likes the turning mile and, when I asked her in the straight, she picked up well. She's all heart and kept galloping all the way to the line. I thought for a few strides at the top of the straight Hollie Doyle [aboard Saffron Beach] might have had me, but my one picked up again. I was quite surprised we won by three lengths, but she just kept galloping away and galloped them into the ground. These home Group 1s are very hard to win and I'm delighted she's won her Group 1. Her career deserved it and she has it now.”

Pearls Galore, who becomes the 21st Group 1 scorer for her sire (by Green Desert), is the fifth of seven foals and one of five winners from as many runners produced by G3 Dirk Elbers-Preis victrix Pearl Banks (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), herself a daughter of G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}). Pearly Shells, kin to GI Hollywood Turf Cup-winning sire Frenchpark (GB) (Fools Holme), is also the dam of last term's G2 Prix Greffulhe runner-up Smile Makers (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and Listed Prix Panacee victrix Pearls Or Passion (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), herself the dam of G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Pelligrina (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and Listed Floodlit S. placegetter Podemos (Ger) (Shamardal). The May-foaled homebred bay is a half-sister to G3 Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung victrix Lucky Lycra (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), Listed Prix des Lilas winner Pearly Steph (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt L'Ambassadeur (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}). Pearly Steph, in turn, is the dam of this year's G3 Prix Minerve victrix Eternal Pearl (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and the family also features multiple Group 1-winning sires St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Boomerang Rivals Fail To Catch Front-Runner Jadoomi

There are few forces more unstoppable than a trainer on a roll and, in the case of Simon and Ed Crisford, the father and son combination maintained their irresistible run of form on Longines Irish Champions Weekend when Jadoomi (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) burned his rivals off from the front in the G2 Clipper Logistics Boomerang Mile.

Boomerangs are designed to come back but there was no catching Jadoomi under Christophe Soumillon. The 4-year-old was stretching his unbeaten run this season to three and, after recording back-to-back Group 2 successes, connections are contemplating a tilt at the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot on Champions Day.

Ed Crisford said, “He didn't have a penalty for winning at Goodwood and, when the rain came, I was so delighted as he likes to get his toe in. I think Christophe [Soumillon] made it very simple as we wanted to go forward.”

He added, “The Queen Elizabeth II S. could be an option. He's not in the race but we may have to consider supplementing him.”

And on that Leopardstown triumph, the Crisfords can dare to be bold with Jadoomi. He was good in winning the Celebration Mile at Goodwood, but Saturday's Leopardstown triumph represented a career best by some way as he pulled four lengths clear of Glounthaune (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who led home a bunched finish for the minor money.

The win produced one of the loudest cheers of the afternoon, with Jadoomi sent to post a rock-solid 9-4 joint-favourite, and Crisford put the 4-year-old's improved form this season down to him being gelded.

“He's improving. We gelded him in the summer and I think it has made a huge difference to him. He's a very good horse and there should be more to come. He's won a lot of prize-money there so perhaps we could entertain supplementing for the Ascot. We'll have to have a sit down and chat about it with the owner.”

Pedigree Notes

Out of the winning South Sister (GB) (Sakhee), Jadoomi is the best of three to race for the 11-year-old. Her latest foals are the juvenile Track Of Time (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}), a yearling filly by Shalaa (Ire) and a weanling colt by Invincible Spirit (Ire). The last-named stallion also enjoyed success at Leopardstown on Saturday with Pearls Galore (Fr) in the G1 Coolmore America “Justify” Matron S.

G3 Prix d'Aumale heroine Joyeuse Entree (GB) (Kendor {Fr}) is the second dam of Saturday's star, and is proving a reliable source of black type, having left the G1 French 2000 Guineas-winning Tin Horse (Ire) (Sakhee), the stakes winner Becomes You (GB) (Lomitas {GB}) and is the granddam of five more stakes winners, counting Jadoomi.
