No Catching Longshot One Timer In Franklin-Simpson At Kentucky Downs

One Timer broke through for his first graded stakes win Saturday at Kentucky Downs with a gate-to-wire romp in the $600,000 Franklin-Simpson (G2) Saturday.

The 3-year-old Trappe Shot gelding, ridden by E. T. Baird, cruised across the finish line a 4 1/4-length winner and returned $41.94.

Time for the 6 1/2 furlongs on firm turf was 1:14.59.

First from the gate, One Timer opened a clear lead early, posting snappy fractions of :21.64 and :45.04 for a half mile with Run Curtis Run in pursuit. With a two-length advantage into the stretch, he drew away from Run Curtis Run and was kept to his task by a right-handed taps for the easy win.

Run Curtis Run stayed on for second, a neck in front of third-place finisher and favorite Big Invasion.

Campaigned by Patricia's Hope LLC and Richard Ravin and trained by Larry Rivelli, One Timer posted his fifth win from eight career starts and boosted his career bankroll to $577,113 with the $345,960 winner's share of the Franklin-Simpson purse.

Bred in Kentucky by St. Simon Place LLC, One Timer was produced by the Blame mare Spanish Star.

Arrogate’s And Tell Me Nolies Upsets Del Mar Debutante In Photo Finish

Peter Redekop's And Tell Me Nolies paid tribute to her late champion sire Arrogate Saturday, nailing heavy favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Home Cooking (Honor Code) on the line to take the GI Del Mar Debutante S.

Given a 9-1 chance with Home Cooking pounded down to 3-5, And Tell Me No Lies shuffled a bit at the start as her neighbors on each side broke in her direction, but she did not falter and moved up to establish position as the chalk took control, clocking a :22.01 first quarter. One off the fence in fifth, she kept the favorite within her sights as the half went in a swift :44.36. And Tell Me Nolies ranged up two wide on the far turn as Home Cooking entered the stretch on a clear lead. The Bob Baffert runner grew a bit leg weary in the final strides and And Tell Me Nolies found just enough to push past her late for a narrow upset in a tight photo finish. Ice Dancing (Frosted) completed the trifecta.

“I told Peter [Miller] that I had confidence in this filly right from the start,” said winning rider Ramon Vasquez. “I'm glad he was loyal to me and let me ride her in this one. She was a runner all the way today. And I knew I was the winner at the wire. This is my first Grade I win. It is so amazing. I want to thank Peter for giving me this chance. This is amazing.”

“I didn't see a ton of speed on the form,” Miller said. “We were drawn inside. I think he [Vasquez] wanted to get position, which he did. I did like some of the moves he made. At the five-eighths pole when he beat Cedillo ([Vegas Magic] to the spot, and then when he got her outside around the two-and-a-half furlong pole, I felt really good.”

A $70,000 KEESEP acquisition by D.J. Stable, And Tell Me Nolies brought $230,000 from agent Bryan Anderson at OBS April after breezing in :10 flat. Rallying for fourth behind Satin Doll (Congrats)–who was scratched from this event–when unveiled in a five-panel event at this oval July 23, she broke through next out with a narrow graduation going 6 1/2 furlongs over this strip Aug. 14. Ice Dancing finished third that day.

Pedigree Notes:

And Tell Me Nolies is the second Grade I/graded winner for her late sire Arrogate. She hails from his second of three crops and his other graded scorer comes from his first in this year's GI Kentucky Oaks victress Secret Oath. They are two of the Eclipse winners four black-type scorers. Breeder Lara Run acquired GSW & GISP Be Fair for $50,000 at the 2018 KEENOV sale in foal to Practical Joke and sold her to Jim Ballinger in foal to super sire Gun Runner for $35,000 at the OBSWIN sale. The resulting foal is a now-yearling colt, who brought $150,000 from McMahon & Hill Bloodstock at Keeneland November last term. The half-sister to GISW Macho Again (Macho Uno) failed to get in foal to The Big Beast for 2022, but was bred to Mo Town this spring.

Stonestreet Star Campanelle Gets First U.S. GSW in Ladies Sprint

It may be hard to believe, but American runner–and international star–Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was winning her first U.S. graded event in Saturday's GIII Mint Ladies Sprint S. at Kentucky Downs. Of course, she's a Group 1 winner and highweight in both England and France, but the remarkable U.S-trained and -based 4-year-old's biggest win on American soil previously was Keeneland's listed Giant's Causeway S. in April. She'd shipped over to Royal Ascot after the Giant's Causeway to deadheat for third in the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. June 18, no easy feat amongst a 24-horse field.

Campanelle has more frequent flier miles than many people: bred in Ireland, she made her first start in the U.S. (a debut maiden win at Gulfstream), then shipped to Royal Ascot for a win in the G2 Queen Mary S. Back to the U.S. to train, she shipped to France for a G1 Darley Prix Morny victory, then back stateside again for a fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. And that was just as a 2-year-old. Campanelle opened her 3-year-old campaign at Royal Ascot with a win in the G1 Commonwealth Cup, came back to the U.S. to train, and shipped overseas again but faltered in France at Deauville. She closed out her sophomore year in the U.S. and then began her 4-year-old account at Keeneland before the third at Ascot and now the Franklin, Ky. win. Combined, the dizzying schedule and top wins have turned Campanelle into one of the most respected female turf sprinters in the world, making her 3-5 price in the Ladies Sprint no surprise.

Her performance was no surprise either. A close-up fourth as Creative Credit (Creative Cause) flew through a :21.55 first quarter, Campanelle continued rating and was patiently parked in third at the :44.73 half. The bay came flying five wide and menacingly on the outside as Bay Storm (Kantharos), who had been tracking the leader all the way, had the wire measured. The two battled late and drove together down the stretch with neither wanting to give an inch. Campanelle edged in front and Bay Storm fought back, but Campanelle's class prevailed to get her nose down on the wire as Bay Storm had to settle for the runner-up sport after being heartbreakingly close to notching her first graded win.

“She is a fighter,” said Barbara Banke, in whose Stonestreet Stables silks Campanelle runs. “She's super fast, and she is not going to let anyone get by her if she can help it. [Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.] cut it a little close, but she's really good.”

Ortiz agreed: “I love her. She's the most kind, fun to ride. She's crazy good. She made the lead a little earlier today. I hit her a couple of times. She responded so I put the stick away, keeping busy on her. Maybe she got confused a little. But she saw that filly and fought back.”

Pedigree Notes:

Standing at Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland, Kodiac (GB) counts 37 group/graded winners among his 81 Northern Hemisphere-bred black-type winners. Two–Campanelle and English GSW Shaden (Ire)–are out of Namid (GB) mares, quite a statistic since they represent exactly one-third of the stakes winners out of Namid daughters. Tally-Ho, who also bred Campanelle, bought her dam for 39,000gns at Tattersalls July in 2016, got an Exceed And Excel (Aus) filly out of her in 2017, and promptly bred her back to Kodiac, resulting in Campanelle, who is the last reported foal out of Janina (GB).

Campanelle Outbattles Bay Storm To Win Mint Ladies Sprint At Kentucky Downs

Stonestreet Stables' Campanelle, whose entry into the Mint Ladies Sprint (G3) triggered a purse increase to $1 million, landed the first-place prize with a hard-fought nose victory in the race Saturday at Kentucky Downs.

The 4-year-old Kodiac filly, with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, battled front-runner Bay Storm through the final furlong and prevailed by the slimmest margin. She Can't Sing was third, two lengths behind Bay Storm.

Final time for the 6 ½-furlong turf test for fillies and mares was 1:14.57.

Campanelle was third in the Platinum Jubilee (G1) at Royal Ascot June 18 in her previous start but was back to her brilliant best Saturday, adding the Ladies Sprint to her record, which also includes wins in the 2020 Darley Prix Morny (G1) at Deauville, and the 2021 Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot. She won the Giant's Causeway Stakes April 16 at Keeneland to begin the year for trainer Wesley Ward.

Bred in Ireland by Tally-Ho Stud, Campanelle is out of the Namid mare Janina. She returned $3.56.
