Steeplechaser Snap Decision Chasing Fourth Grade 1 Win In Thursday’s Lonesome Glory

Bruton Street-US's three-time Grade 1-winning steeplechaser Snap Decision will look to notch his fourth top-level score for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Fisher in Thursday's Grade 1, $150,000 Lonesome Glory Handicap, a 2 1/2-mile test over the hurdles for older horses, at Aqueduct Racetrack to kick off stakes action for the Belmont at the Big A fall meet.

An 8-year-old gelded son of Hard Spun, Snap Decision finished second in this event last year to The Mean Queen, who is entered in the $75,000 William Entenmann Novice in Race 1.

Snap Decision enters from a dominating performance in the Grade 1 Jonathan Sheppard Handicap on August 17 at Saratoga Race Course where he overcame 164 pounds to come home an impressive 13 1/4-length winner over Going Country in the 2 3/8-mile test.

“I was very proud,” Fisher said. “He's doing better than ever and I think he's a much better horse than he was last year.”

Snap Decision will be making his fifth start of a season that began with a runner-up finish to returning rival Iranistan in the Grade 2 Temple Gwathmey Hurdle in April at Middleburg in his first effort off a six-month respite. He followed with a triumphant repeat victory in the Grade 1 Iroquois in May at Percy Warner, defeating Pistol Whipped by 7 1/4 lengths. This July, he returned to the flat for the first time since he joined Fisher's barn in April 2019, finishing third in the Colonial Cup at Colonial Downs before his Jonathan Sheppard romp.

Fisher said jumping has allowed Snap Decision to reach his full potential as a racehorse.

“He wasn't a top horse on the flat, but some horses just love to jump,” said Fisher. “My old assistant has a horse who would turn left out of the gate, but loves jumping. Some horses just love it.”

A model of consistency, Snap Decision has never finished off-the-board in 16 starts over the jumps. His record of 35-13-7-7 includes a memorable nine-race winning streak from July 2019 to June 2021 that was highlighted by his first graded scores in Temple Gwathmey and the Iroquois. He boasts total purse earnings of $822,334.

Assigned a field-high 168 pounds, Snap Decision drew post 1 with regular rider Graham Watters in the irons.

Trainer Keri Brion will be represented by two contenders in dual Grade 1-placed Iranistan and nine-time winner Ask Paddington, who makes his stateside debut in his first outing for Brion.

Hudson River Farms' Iranistan was last seen finishing a distant sixth as the post-time favorite in the Grade 1 A.P. Smithwick behind Down Royal on July 20, tracking in second for the first mile before fading to the back of the field.

“He bled in the Smithwick, but he's never bled before, so we believe it was a one-off thing,” Brion said. “He's gone to the hyperbaric chamber and we've done some things, so he's back and it will be good to see him back over two and a half miles.”

Iranistan defeated Snap Decision by 2 1/4 lengths this spring in the Temple Gwathmey, and Brion said she is hopeful the son of Einstein can play spoiler again as he carries 20 pounds less [148] than his familiar rival.

“Getting all the weight off Snap Decision [helps]. He beat him when he had 14 pounds off of him,” said Brion. “Having 20 pounds off this time is good to see. If he shows up back to the Iranistan we know, it will take a lot to beat him. He's showing all the signs he's still the horse that beat Snap Decision this spring.”

Iranistan picked up Grade 1 placings for previous trainer Jonathan Sheppard when second in the Smithwick and third in the New York Turf Writers Cup at Saratoga in 2018. In addition to his Temple Gwathmey score, Iranistan's other win in four starts for Brion was a 1 1/2-length score in the Noel Laing in November at Montpelier.

Metahorse Racing's Ask Paddington streaks into the Lonesome Glory from four victories in England dating to this May with a strong nine-length score going 2 9/16 miles at Market Rasen. Most recently, he was a determined three-quarter-length winner at the same course going 2 7/8 miles over good going.

Brion said that while some European horses struggle with the speed of American steeplechasers, Ask Paddington is plenty fast and has served as the workmate for Brion's Champion Steeplechaser The Mean Queen.

“He has a lot of speed at home and he could really be anything,” said Brion. “Any horse that can work with The Mean Queen you have to respect. He can stay right alongside her.”

An 8-year-old son of Ask, Ask Paddington will make his 33rd outing at his 15th racetrack, something Brion said the chestnut gelding has taken all in stride.

“He's a very classy animal and they've done a great job with him in England,” said Brion. “He came here in really good order. You can tell he's a good horse, so we'll see. I'm excited about him.”

Parker Hendriks will pilot Iranistan from post 2 while Danny Mullins [146 pounds] is tasked with the ride aboard Ask Paddington from post 5.

Four-time stakes-winner Song for Someone [post 6, 150 pounds, Thomas Garner] is one of two entries for conditioner Leslie Young, who also sends out Grade 2-winner Redicean [post 7, 140 pounds, Sam Twiston-Davies].

Mrs. S. K. Johnston, Jr.'s Song for Someone will make his second stateside start after finishing a distant fifth in the Jonathan Sheppard last out. The 7-year-old Medicean gelding won three stakes in a row in 2020 in his native England, taking the Kingwell Hurdle in February at Kempton, the Ascot Coral Hurdle in November at Ascot and the International Hurdle in December at Cheltenham. He is searching for his first win in seven starts since then.

Sharon Sheppard's Redicean makes his 10th appearance in Grade 1 company as he enters from a third to Snap Decision in the Jonathan Sheppard. The 8-year-old son of Medicean picked up his lone graded win in style this spring when a runaway 54-length winner of the Grade 2 David Semmes Memorial in May at Great Meadow. The veteran bay has hit the board in five other graded events, including a third in this race last year.

Completing the field are Belfast Banter [post 3, 144 pounds, Jamie Bargary], Noah And The Ark [post 4, 140 pounds, Harrison Beswick] and Amschel [post 8, 142 pounds, Barry Foley].

The Lonesome Glory is slated as Race 2 on Thursday's 10-race Opening Day Card, which kicks off with the William Entenmann Novice Stakes in Race 1. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

The William Entenmann, a 2 3/8-mile novice hurdle stake open to older horses who have not won over hurdles prior to March 1, 2021 or which have never won three races other than 3-year-olds, is highlighted by the return of the aforementioned The Mean Queen for trainer Keri Brion.

Buttonwood Farm's The Mean Queen has been away from the races since closing out her Championship season with a win in the Grade 1 Grand National in October at Far Hills. The 6-year-old Doyen mare won the Lonesome Glory last year and was nominated to attempt a title defense, but entered the William Entenmann to ease back into the races after her lengthy layoff.

Brion said she is excited to see her three-time Grade 1-winner back at the races.

“She hasn't run in 10 months and it seems like the most logical decision,” said Brion. “She gets a good weight in this so it's her run to get her going again. She's ready to go. This is the type of horse you dream that you get to train at some point of your career. She's incredible and we're really thrilled to have her back out. It's great the following she's brought to the sport.”

Parker Hendriks [158 pounds] will ride The Mean Queen from post 1.

A talented field includes Proven Innocent [post 2, 149 pounds; Jamie Bargary], Booby Trap [post 3, 153 pounds, Sam Twiston-Davies], who races with cheek pieces on; Going Country [post 4, 153, Danny Mullins]; Bandua [post 5, 150 pounds, Gerard Galligan]; Howyabud [post 6, 156 pounds, Barry Foley] and State of Affair [post 7, 153 pounds, Thomas Garner].

D. Wayne Lukas Will Seek First Cotillion Victory With Secret Oath

The 53rd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion Stakes for 3-year-old fillies has drawn 16 nominations for a chance to start in the 1 1/16-mile co-feature on betPARX Pennsylvania Derby Day at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Penn. The Cotillion will be one of four graded stakes among the 10 stakes races on the Sept. 24 program.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas has enjoyed success in almost every American stakes over his legendary career, but the 87-year-old Hall of Famer has yet to grace the winners' circle in the Cotillion. That could change this year with his multiple graded stakes-winning filly Secret Oath.

Briland Farm's Arrogate filly could make her eighth start of 2022 in the Cotillion, coming off her runner-up finish behind Nest in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes Aug. 20 at Saratoga Race Course. She also finished second behind Nest in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga after defeating that rival in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. Secret Oath also finished third against males in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park and fourth against males in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.

Lukas believes that a victory in the Cotillion would put his filly back in the running for the 3-year-old filly championship.

“I think it does, yes,” Lukas said. “But we still have to probably go head-to-head with (Nest) to get the right answer. Right now, on this day, she is better than we are. We are looking forward to getting down there for the Cotillion.”

Secret Oath will train at Saratoga Race Course before shipping Parx the week of the Cotillion.

Michael Lund Peterson's Adare Manor could prove a tough foe should she travel from California for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Uncle Mo was winless in two starts as a 2-year-old, but returned to break her maiden by 12 lengths at Santa Anita Park before a 13-length victory in the Grade 3 Las Virgenes in early February. Named for a five-star hotel and golf resort in Limerick, Ireland, Adare Manor finished second in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks and second in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico.

“We were very high on her and she has sort of went off form a little bit,” Baffert said. “She got beat in the Santa Anita Oaks and we did not go to the Kentucky Oaks. She ran back in the Black-Eyed Susan and got beat. She has trained really well since then.”

Adare Manor has been firing multiple bullet works from Baffert's summertime base at Del Mar in anticipation of her next start.

Baffert may also opt to send the lightly raced Fun to Dream, who has yet to make a start against graded stakes company. The California-bred daughter of Arrogate, unraced at 2, broke her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita then returned to win the Fleet Treat Stakes by 9 3/4 lengths.

Baffert has started four fillies in the Cotillion and has yet to finish off the board after finishing fourth with Bonnie Blue Flag in 2010. He won with Plum Pretty in 2011 before Jojo Warrior's finished third in 2014 and Abel Tasman finished second in 2017.

Alyfife Racing's Fingal's Cave is undefeated through four career starts and has yet to face graded stakes company, but the New York-bred would be an interesting entrant should she venture out of her home state for the first time. After breaking her maiden by 8 1/2 lengths May 21 at Belmont Park, the David Donk trainee returned to win an allowance race by 9 lengths. The filly by Carpe Diem shipped north and showed that she could transfer her speed with a pair of wins at Saratoga Race Course that included the Fleet Indian Stakes over a muddy, sealed track.

Others nominated to the Cotillion are:

  • Joseph Besecker's Bazinga C (Timothy Kreiser)
  • All IN Racing Stables and J P S Stable's Beach Daze (Farrel Mann)
  • Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Long Valley Stable's Divine Huntress (H. Graham Motion)
  • Klaravich Stables' Gerrymander (Chad Brown)
  • Red Oak Stable's Goddess of Fire (Todd Pletcher)
  • Team Valor International's Green Up (Todd Pletcher)
  • Flurry Racing Stable's Interstatedaydream (Brad Cox)
  • Gatsas Stable's Midnight Stroll (John Terranova)
  • LC Racing, Cash is King and Gary Barber's Morning Matcha (Robert Reid Jr.)
  • Thomas G. Coulter's New Hire (Erin McClellan)
  • KHK Racing's Shahama (Todd Pletcher)
  • Peter E. Blum Thoroughbred's Society (Steve Asmussen)

The betPARX Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion Day card also includes the Grade 2, $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes; Grade 3, $300,000 Turf Monster Stakes; Grade 3, $200,000 Greenwood Cup Stakes; $200,000 Parx Dirt Mile Stakes; $200,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap; $200,000 Plum Pretty Stakes; $200,000 Prince Lucky Stakes; and $200,000 Imply Stakes. First post Saturday, Sept. 24 is 12:05 p.m. ET.

Taiba Tops 28 Nominees To Pennsylvania Derby

Nominations are set for the Grade 1, $1 million betPARX Pennsylvania Derby with as many as 28 3-year-olds under consideration for the 42nd renewal of the 1 1/8-mile event Saturday, Sept. 24 at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Penn.

The betPARX Pennsylvania Derby anchors a 10-stakes program that also co-features the Grade 1, $ million Cotillion for 3-year-old filles at 1 1/16 miles.

Zedan Racing Stable's Taiba could make the cross-country trek from his Southern California base for Hall of Fame Trainer Bob Baffert. The Gun Runner colt broke his maiden by 7 1/2 lengths at first asking March 5 at Santa Anita Park before returning a little more than a month later to capture the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. Taiba joins Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike and Cyberknife as Grade 1 winners nominated to the Pennsylvania Derby.

Taiba finished 12th in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby May 7, then was given a bit of a freshening and returned to miss by a head to Cyberknife in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth. Taiba has turned in bullet works in his breezes for his fifth career start.

“He has been training well,” Baffert said. “I thought his Haskell was really strong and he got beat by a nice horse (Cyberknife). He is doing well right now. He has been talented since Day 1, was so impressive when he broke his maiden. And the Santa Anita was very impressive. The Derby, he got caught up in all those horses, a real cavalry charge. Then he was freshened up and we ran him in the Haskell. He is happy and healthy.”

The lightly raced Rhetoric would make his stakes debut in the Pennsylvania Derby after sprinting in his first three starts for Baffert. The Quality Road colt broke his maiden by 6 lengths at Los Alamitos to start his 3-year-old year then debuted against allowance foes and placed fifth before stretching out to a route to finish third at Del Mar.

Baffert has enjoyed success at Parx, winning the Pennsylvania Derby three times beginning with Bayern, who owns the track record in the race by stopping the teletimer in 1:46.96 for the 9-furlong trip in 2014. Bayern went on to win the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic in his next start to close out the year. Baffert won back-to-back installments with West Coast in 2017 and McKinzie in 2018.

“It has become such an important race,” Baffert said. “They put up $1 million and the timing is good for the Breeders' Cup. And we have had some success there. Our horses run well there.”

Trainer Brad Cox, fresh off his being awarded the 2021 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer, nominated four runners in search of his first Pennsylvania Derby victory.

Peachtree Stable's Tawny Port could make his second Grade 1 start after his seventh in the Kentucky Derby. The Pioneerof the Nile colt returned from the Derby and won the Grade 3 Ohio Derby June 25 then shipped up to Saratoga Race Course to finish third in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy July 30.

“I talked it over with John (Fort of Peachtree Stable) and we decided we wanted to give him some time after the Jim Dandy,” Cox said. “He ran well, we gave him a shot.”

Gary and Mary West's Best Actor is one of four nominees to have a victory over the course, that coming in the Grade 3, $300,000 Smarty Jones Aug. 23. The Flatter colt drew off to win by 5 3/4 lengths over fellow nominees Kissalot and Creative Minister after his runner up performance to Actuator in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby on July 9. The Kentucky-bred owns strong victories in his first two starts before his first graded stakes try in the Indiana Derby, and could provide Cox with a strong contender if he runs.

Cox also nominated Gold Square's Cyberknife, who looks to return to his winning ways after his three-race win streak came to an end with a runner-up finish to Epicenter in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes Aug. 27. The Gun Runner colt won the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby in April at Oaklawn Park and the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes in July at Monmouth Park.

Flurry Racing Stables Interstatedaydream, one of three fillies to be nominated against the boys, brings more experience within the Cox-trained pair off her second to Green Up in the $150,000 Cathryn Sophia Stakes Aug. 23 at Parx. The Ontario-bred posted back-to-back victories in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan and Grade 3 Indiana Oaks prior to the Cathryn Sophia.

Cox and his team are in search of their first Grade 1 victory at Parx after they made their debut with a fourth in last year's running with Fulsome. Cox's superstar Monomoy Girl crossed the finish first in the 2018 Cotillion, but was disqualified for interference in the stretch.

“It's great hospitality at Parx,” Cox said. “They really take care of you and it's a great day of racing. We've had luck there in the past. … We are looking forward to going back there.”

Trainer Eric Reed said there is an “outside chance” that Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike could make an appearance in the Pennsylvania Derby. The Kentucky-bred son of Keen Ice won the first leg of the Triple Crown at odds of 80-1 after his closing kick to the inside of Epicenter and Zendon carried him and his supporters to a historic win. Owned by Red TR Racing, Rich Strike finished sixth in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes before a fourth in the Grade 1 Travers.

“It's being considered but it is close between starts and the travel from Saratoga to Kentucky and then to Pennsylvania is a concern,” Reed said. “That's a lot of miles for Richie. (Owner) Rick Dawson and I are discussing what's next, but I haven't made any decisions yet.”

Others nominated to the Pennsylvania Derby are:

  • West Point Thoroughbreds and Joseph E. Besecker's B Dawk, trained by Doug O'Neill
  • Clear Stars Stable, Mitre Box Stable and Richard Schosberg's Bossmakinbossmoves (Rick Schosberg)
  • Fern Circle Stable, Back Racing LLC and Magdelena Racing's Creative Minister (Ken McPeek)

  • Team Valor International's Green Up (Todd Pletcher)
  • Over The Moon Racing Stable LLC's He'ssosubtle (Louis Linder Jr.)

  • CMNWLTH and Siena Farm's We the People (Rodolphe Brisset)

  • C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable's White Abarrio (Saffie Joseph Jr.)
  • Jeff Drown's Zandon (Chad Brown)

The betPARX Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion Day card also includes the Grade 2, $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes; Grade 3, $300,000 Turf Monster Stakes; Grade 3, $200,000 Greenwood Cup Stakes; $200,000 Parx Dirt Mile Stakes; $200,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap; $200,000 Plum Pretty Stakes; $200,000 Prince Lucky Stakes; and $200,000 Imply Stakes.
