Rags Pauline Tops Fasig-Tipton Digital Sale

The Fasig-Tipton August Digital Selected Sale concluded Tuesday afternoon with 45 horses sold for $500,900. The online auction was topped by Rags Pauline (Union Rags) (hip 2), a 6-year-old mare in foal to Candy Ride (Arg), who sold for $80,000 to Jack Hirsch. Rosilyn Polan's Sunday Morning Farm consigned the mare from its Versailles, Kentucky base.

Rags Pauline is a half-sister to Grade II winner Keen Pauline (Pulpit) and is carrying a foal bred on a similar cross to Unified, a three-time graded stakes winner and top-10 first-crop sire last year. Polan purchased Rags Pauline for $17,000 at the 2020 Keeneland January sale.

Buyers may still make offers on horses that failed to meet their reserve by visiting the sale page, then clicking “Make Offer” next to the horse they are interested in purchasing.

Fasig-Tipton's next digital auction will be the final phase of the Glen Todd Dispersal. Bidding will be held Sept. 22-29.

TAA Announces Photo Contest Winners

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has chosen 12 winning photos for its second annual calendar photo contest. The photos will be featured in the organization's 2023 calendar. The first-place submission, which is also featured on the cover of the 2023 TAA Calendar, was won by Erin Degnan and her adopted off-track Thoroughbred Cackle the Cuda, courtesy of John Miller, Spectrum Photography. Cackle the Cuda made 43 starts before retiring from racing with a record of 8-11-6 and earnings of $118,790. Now this Kentucky-bred warhorse is enjoying a life of competitive trail and endurance riding. TAA-accredited After the Races began retraining Cackle the Cuda for a second career after racing, before placing him for adoption which ultimately led the son of Candy Ride (Arg) to Degnan.

For the second consecutive year, the TAA calendar is sponsored by Repole Stable.

“The TAA is an awesome organization that we are always thrilled to support,” said Mike Repole. “Their calendar is a great way to show off what our amazing Thoroughbreds can do off the track.”

The 2023 TAA Calendar is now available for pre-order at www.thoroughbredaftercare.org/donation_now. Every $20 donation to the TAA is eligible to receive a calendar upon request. Calendars will begin shipping in November.

Enhanced Protocols Announced For Jockey Club Gold Cup Day

The New York State Gaming Commission has announced that its Equine Medical Director Dr. Scott E. Palmer VMD and all three stewards will be made available to the media at the conclusion of the program to discuss any incidents that occur during the races at Saratoga Race Course Sept. 3.

In addition, Dr. Palmer will be available to speak to the media in the event of any equine health-related on-track incidents that take place during the day. Dr. Luis Castro, the American Association of Equine Practitioners on-call veterinarian, will provide media support for the FOX Network coverage of the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Horses entered for the Gold Cup will be subject to 72-hour 'dedicated watch'–i.e. one guard stationed full time–by experienced security personnel leading up to post time. Horses are bound to the following:

  • Horses must be on the grounds of Saratoga Race Course no later than 72 hours prior to their anticipated post time. Exceptions are at the discretion of the Stewards.
  • The Commission will obtain out-of-competition blood samples of horses competing in The Jockey Club Gold Cup and have the samples tested at the New York Equine Drug Testing and Research Program at Morrisville State College.
  • The Commission has coordinated with other jurisdictions to obtain out-of-competition samples from horses not stabled in New York.
  • Once arrived, horses must remain at Saratoga Race Course until after the running of the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Exceptions will only be granted in the case of an unforeseeable emergency, as determined by the dedicated watch security in consultation with veterinarians and the Stewards.
  • Horses shall reside in their trainers' current barns and/or at stalls on the grounds, which are subject to monitoring by security personnel.
  • No horse entered in the Jockey Club Gold Cup may be treated within 72-hours of the race unless Commission security personnel are present. NYRA or Commission security personnel will monitor all treatments performed by veterinarians.
  • No administration of any medication or substance by dose syringe is permitted within 24-hours of a race.
  • All syringes and containers for administered medication will be retained by Commission personnel for possible testing.
  • Veterinarians shall submit a 72-hour treatment plan for each horse entered in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Plans were due by noon Aug. 31, 2022.
  • Complete veterinary records for 72-hours prior to the Jockey Club Gold Cup shall be submitted to the Commission, which will review and then publicly post the records to its website.
  • Entry-exit logs will be maintained by NYRA and Commission security personnel.
  • All persons–including veterinarians, trainers, assistant trainers, farriers, owners, or other connections–on entering the stall, engaging in contact with the horse, or performing any service for the horse, must have a valid Commission license on their person.
  • Such persons will be logged-in by security personnel, along with the reason for their visit.
  • Routine stall and horse maintenance by identified grooms and staff will be monitored but are exempt from logging.
  • All equipment, feed, hay bales, etc. are subject to search and seizure by both NYRA and the Commission, as provided by law.
  • On race day, no treatments will be permitted for horses entered in any Stakes Race pursuant to NYRA policy, unless it is for an emergency or as approved by the Stewards.
  • All horses participating in the Jockey Club Gold Cup must report to the Assembly Barn no less than 45 minutes prior to the designated Post Time.
  • On race day, blood samples for TCO2 analysis will be collected from horses in the Assembly Barn between 45 minutes to 1 hour before post time. Horses will then be escorted to the paddock.

‘Hottest Political Race Of The Year’: New York State Legislators Compete In Live Harness Races At Yonkers

Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts announced the date has been set for the Annual Legislative Pace and New York State Senators and Assembly Members have circled Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, on their busy calendars for what is being dubbed “The Hottest Political Race of the Year.” The Annual Legislative Pace will give legislators the reins as they compete for bragging rights in what has become an ultra-competitive, yet friendly, must-see harness racing extravaganza at Yonkers Raceway hosted by Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts' (“Empire City”) and the Standardbred Owners Association of New York (“SOANY”).

The event has been held annually, with the exception of 2020, allowing New York State legislators to participate in before-the-card non-wagering harness races, holding the reins in double-seated jog carts alongside professional harness drivers. Each of the races consists of two trips around Yonker Raceway's historic one-half-mile oval.

“The annual Legislative Pace event is a great way for legislators to come together and advocate for the needs of the harness industry,” said New York State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. “As the Chair of the Senate Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee, I work to ensure that the harness racing industry is properly represented and the needs of the riders, horses, trainers and owners are adequately met. I look forward to taking part in this great event.”

In the 2021 Legislative Pace, the three winners of their respective harness races took the reins for a second time to determine which of the three would be named Champion of the night. The match pitted three Assembly Members against each other. First-time Legislative Pace participant Assembly Member Joe DeStefano (R-Medford) faced veteran participants and former race champions in Chair of the Assembly Racing and Wagering Committee Gary Pretlow (D-Westchester) and colleague Nader Sayegh (D-Westchester). DeStefano emerged the overall Champion in a competitive race.

Immediately after his victory, DeStefano turned his focus to returning to defend his championship title.

“I can now officially claim an undefeated record at the Legislative Pace, and I look forward to defending my title next year,” DeStefano said. “Winning these two races on behalf of my district in Suffolk County was an added bonus to such a fun day with my colleagues in government to come together and highlight the importance of harness racing to the downstate and upstate economies.”

The 2021 Legislative Pace participants got to experience the significant investment MGM Resorts made in the historic track of more than $750,000 that funded the first such investment the track has seen in more than 15 years, including the installation and upgrading of track lighting to an LED system.

“I look forward to participating in Empire City Casino's annual Legislative Pace event alongside my colleagues,” said New York State Assembly Racing and Wagering Committee Chair J. Gary Pretlow. “It will be another memorable year with so much fun and a competitive spirit from all the participants.”

The legislative line-up for the 2022 Legislative Pace will be announced shortly. Past participants include representatives from across New York State in both the State Senate and State Assembly. Participation is limited to state representatives currently holding elected office.

The historic Yonkers Raceway has also announced that it will once again host the famed $1 million MGM Yonkers International Trot on Saturday, October 15, along with the $500,000 Aria Invitational Race and $500,000 Robert Miecuna Invitational Race. This is the first International Trot to be held since before the pandemic in 2019. The race draws the best harness equine athletes from across the world to Yonkers, New York to compete for one of the richest purses in the industry.

Since 1959, the International Trot has historically been a global showcase of harness racing, hosting driver, trainer and equine royalty from across the globe. The International Trot officially moved to Yonkers Raceway in 1988 and was contested as a mile-and-a-quarter event on the historic half-mile track for a few years before being revived in 2015 after a 20-year hiatus. Now officially rechristened as the MGM Yonkers International Trot and one of only two million-dollar races in North America, along with the Hambletonian, it is one of the few stakes races fully funded by the host track and requires no financial commitment from owners.

Live racing continues at Yonkers Raceway Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday evenings with a first-race post time of 6:55 PM. Races are simulcast and available for viewing and wagering online at www.EmpireCityBets.com where racing fans can create a free account and view live racing at Yonkers Raceway and tracks across the country.
