Pricey Filly ‘Justifies’ Rising Stardom

Despite her $725,000 Keeneland September price tag, C R K Stable's Justique (Justify–Grazie Mille, by Bernardini) snuck a bit under the radar Sunday evening as Bob Baffert-trained Home Cooking (Honor Code) took virtually every dollar of tote support in a salty looking Del Mar maiden special weight. But there was no missing Justique in the stretch, as she inhaled her competition super impressively to become her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy)'s sixth individual winner and second 'TDN Rising Star'.

Bidding to become the first debut winner for trainer John Shirreffs since June of 2019 (his second most recent was future GISW Hard Not to Love {Hard Spun}), the half-sister to fellow freshman sire Mo Town (Uncle Mo), GISW, $519,600, was very slowly away as 1-2 Home Cooking knocked heads with $600,000 2-year-old purchase Fourth Street (Street Sense) on the front end. Justique picked rivals off rapidly midway on the turn for home, but still had her work cut out for her as Kissed by Fire (Friesan Fire)–herself a $350,000 FTMMAY grad–ranged up and looked the most likely spoiler. But Justique really caught the eye as the top two passed the eight pole, and she bowled over the top of them under just a hand ride with a move that–dare we say–was a bit reminiscent the one made by Shirreffs' Hall of Fame mare Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}) in her own unveiling. The winning margin was three lengths and the final time was 1:04.29. Kissed by Fire bested the big chalk for second.

Triple Crown winner Justify has already been represented by two graded/group-winning fillies in fellow 'Rising Star' and G2 Airlie Stud S. heroine Statuette and GIII Schuylerville S. winner Just Cindy. The Justify over Bernardini cross also produced last week's five-length Ellis debut scorer Justa Warrior. Justique's co-breeder John Gunther bred Justify too.

Mo Town, who has three winners thus far himself and stands alongside Justify at Coolmore, got the 'Rising Star' nod for a second-out romp on the stretch-out in 2016. He immediately added the GII Remsen S. and reached the highest level on the Del Mar lawn the following season when reinventing himself as a turf horse and annexing the GI Hollywood Derby.

Justique's second dam Molto Vita (Carson City) was a GSW/MGISP sprinter who also produced SW/GSPs Jaguar Paw (Giant's Causeway) and Venetian Mask (Pulpit). Third dam Princess Polonia (Danzig) was a graded winner as well.

Dam Grazie Mille produced a full-sister to Justique Mar. 29 and was bred back to 'Rising Star' factory Into Mischief for 2023.

Turmoil At Louisiana Downs Includes Resignation Of Racing General Manager, Uproar Over Horsemen’s Purse Account

Mitch Dennison has resigned as general manager of racing at Louisiana Downs and Kato Moy, recently hired as general manager of the casino side of the Bossier City track, also is no longer employed there, the Shreveport Bossier Journal reports.

In further disarray on Louisiana Downs' front side, the BloodHorse reports that almost $2 million reserved for the horsemen's purse account is unaccounted for and that the matter has been turned over to the state's Attorney General and the Louisiana Racing Commission.

Dennison, a former assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen who oversaw mutuels, facility projects, and sponsorships in addition to racing, resigned Tuesday, three months after being hired, replacing longtime Director of Racing David Heitzmann.

He confirmed his resignation to the Shreveport Bossier Journal.

“Mitch is a fantastic person, but right now I really can't comment,” Kevin Preston, founder and president of Premier Gaming Group, which bought Louisiana Downs Casino and Racetrack in January, told the publication. “We have a fantastic racing team…I had a great meeting with them (Wednesday) morning. We will not miss a beat on the racing side.”

A Shreveport Bossier Journal  Twitter post Friday reported that almost $2 million in purse money was “missing” and included a link to a story, but the story has since been deleted. However, the BloodHorse reported Sunday that the money in question, generated from slot machines and pari-mutuel wagering, has yet to be located.

“It's a legal issue, and it is in the hands of the Attorney General and Racing Commission in our state,” Benard Chatters, president of the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, told the BloodHorse. “Hopefully, we can get a quick resolution. There are a lot of things going on in the (Thoroughbred) industry right now that are upsetting to the industry, and we certainly hope this can be resolved as soon as possible.”

Louisiana Downs' current Thoroughbred meet ends September 27.

Gunite Game For Narrow Amsterdam Win, Gives Asmussen Third Weekend Graded Stakes Victory At Saratoga

It did not take long for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen to claim another graded stakes victory at Saratoga Race Course after sweeping Saturday's Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) with Jackie's Warrior and Jim Dandy (G2) with Epicenter, waiting just 24 hours to watch Gunite award him with a repeat win in the $200,000 Amsterdam (G2) for 3-year-olds.

“We've been blessed with some extremely nice horses and they make it all possible,” Asmussen said.

Gunite was a convincing winner of his last outing at Saratoga last September when he scored a Grade 1 triumph in the Hopeful for Asmussen, who took last year's Amsterdam with the revered Jackie's Warrior.

This year, Gunite continues to cement the legacy of his sire and top Asmussen alumnus Gun Runner. He became the second Grade 1 winner for Gun Runner in the span of two days last summer with his Hopeful victory, following just one day after the Asmussen-trained Echo Zulu awarded their young sire with his first Grade 1 winner in the Spinaway. The Amsterdam was the second win of the year for Gunite, who entered from a half-length score after a poor break in the Maxfield Stakes on July 3 at Churchill Downs.

Ridden to victory by returning rider Tyler Gaffalione, Gunite was off a step slow from post 2 but quickly regained his footing and rushed up in the two-path to challenge Grade 1 winner Pinehurst for the lead through an opening quarter mile in :21.78 over the fast main track. The two continued to lead well ahead of a struggling Corniche, who was under a strong ride from Luis Saez in the early stages of the turn and through a half-mile in a demanding :44.60.

With Pinehurst retreating from his prominent position, Gunite continued to find more under Gaffalione but was soon met with a challenge to his outside from maiden winner Accretive, who made up ground with giant strides under Irad Ortiz Jr. Runninsonofagun and Pappacap battled on for show honors as the field stormed through the stretch, but there was no catching the top two as they battled on from the sixteenth pole to the finish.

The determined Gunite was able to persevere to the wire and post a neck score over Accretive in a final time of 1:15.75 for the 6 ½ furlongs.

Runninsonofagun finished 4 1/4 lengths back in third with Pappacap fourth in the nine-horse field. My Prankster, Hoist the Gold, Surfer Dude, Pinehurst and Corniche completed the order of finish.

Gaffalione said Gunite is always game for a challenge.

“First off, all the credit goes to Steve and his team. They did a fabulous job bringing him over here and getting him ready to run, but he showed in the past that he likes to fight,” said Gaffalione. “Last time, he snuck up the rail and had a duel all the way to the wire. Today wasn't any different. He likes the competition.”

Gunite showed the same heart he did when winning the Hopeful in determined fashion last year, losing the advantage at the top of the lane but battling back to post his commanding victory, something Asmussen said he was pleased to see.

“In his last race, he wasn't away cleanly and it put him in a different position. I thought that was a similar race to the horse we ran here last year, just handy and in a good spot, tenacious to the wire,” Asmussen said.

Asmussen added Gunite will likely target the $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) on August 27 at the Spa.

“Extremely good win and obviously we're on to the Allen Jerkens from here,” said Asmussen.

A homebred for Winchell Thoroughbreds, Gunite now boasts a 2-1-0 record from three starts at the Spa, including his breakout win in the Hopeful and a game runner-up effort in the Saratoga Special last year. His other win was his maiden-breaking score at third asking last June at Churchill Downs.

Ron Winchell of Winchell Thoroughbreds said Gunite's Saratoga endeavors have been rewarding.

“It's just nice to come back to where he won his Grade 1 last year and have another win in a Grade 2,” Winchell said. “He was training great. He was training like he wanted to go on from his 2-year-old year and do exactly what he did. Sometimes, you never know if they move on and continue to win graded stakes, but he got it done today.”

Gunite banked $110,000 for his victory, boosting his total purse earnings to $548,099 and returning $16.80 for a $2 win wager.

Ortiz said the Chad Brown-trained Accretive, whose only start was a debut win on June 26 at Belmont Park, was admirable in defeat.

“My horse ran a huge race,” Ortiz said. “It's a big jump up and a huge improvement.”

Saez, who was aboard the post-time favorite and well-beaten Corniche, said the reigning champion two-year-old male will benefit from getting a start under his belt.

“He broke good and was in a good position. He was right there,” said Saez. “He probably needed the race.”

Gunite, whose dam is the Cowboy Cal mare Simple Surprise, has a 4-3-1 record from nine career starts.
