Breeders’ Cup In Play For Saffron Beach After Prix Rothschild Victory

Saffron Beach and jockey William Buick were dominant winners of Tuesday's Group 1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville, convincing trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam that a trip to Kentucky for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf is not out of reach. The 4-year-old daughter of New Bay, racing for owners Ben Sangster, James Wigan and Ollie Sangster, crossed the line 2 1/2 lengths clear of rival Tenebrism.

“She's very brave, very tenacious and probably been better here than she was at Royal Ascot,” Chapple-Hyam told racingpost.com. “They came to challenge her and she found another gear and went away so that's nice to see. We're very pleased because we were giving 7lb to younger rivals.”

Saffron Beach earned her first top-level win in last year's Sun Chariot Stakes, and was also an impressive winner at Royal Ascot this year in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes. The filly has also already traveled overseas, finishing fourth in the UAE's Group 1 Dubai Turf earlier this year, so Chapple-Hyam believes traveling won't be an issue.

“She's maturing now,” Chapple-Hyam continued. “As a younger horse she always had a travelling companion in the horse box with her and now since Dubai she's grown up. She can travel on her own now which makes the job easier for me.”

Overall, Saffron Beach has six of her 11 career starts for earnings of $793,851.

Manitoba Derby Card Sets Handle Records; Diodoro Sends Out Top Three Finishers

The Assiniboia Downs' 74th running of the Manitoba Derby set fresh records this year. Total wagering for the race was $374,166 and the total for the day was $3,523,260, the highest ever for both.

The Derby was won by Red Knobs in a duel with Great Escape right to the finish. Jorge Carreno is credited with a fantastic ride, positioning the winner with an ideal trip. Red Knobs came up from Churchill Downs with some earlier races in Keeneland and Gulfstream Park. Trained by Robertino Diodoro, the Canadian conditioner set two Manitoba Derby records by posting the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the race and also by scoring his fourth Derby victory – the most by any trainer in the 74 year history of the race.

The program was buoyed by the mandatory payout of the ASD Jackpot Pick 5. The carryover was $515k coming into the event and there was $1.65 million in additional money wagered in the pool during the program. The payout for the Pick 5 was $1,920.50 for a 20-cent wager.

“This is my favorite program of the year,” exclaimed CEO Darren Dunn. “We knew this race was going to be competitive and what a battle to the finish! Fans really responded, setting new records for wagering on the day.  We are so thankful to the horse people and staff for putting on a fantastic event and for the horseplayers for all their support. We couldn't be happier!”

The $100,000 guaranteed Pick 4 generated over $204,000 in wagering, an all time high for the track. The Jackpot Hi-5 was not won by a single winner and now has a carryover of $54,591 going into the Tuesday program.

Assiniboia Downs racing continues Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights with first post at 7:30 pm (Central Time). The full schedule can be found at ASDowns.com.

Steeplechase: Veterans Vs. Newcomers In Wednesday’s Jonathan Kiser Novice Stakes At Saratoga

The National Steeplechase Association's summer season continues this week with the $75,000 Jonathan Kiser novice stakes at Saratoga.

On Wednesday, a field of seven is expected to face NYRA starter Hector Soler in the Kiser, at 2 1/16 miles.

Leslie Young saddles Leipers Fork Steeplechasers' Perfect Tapatino and Maranto Manor's newcomer Lydford. Perfect Tapatino, an eight-time winner of $162,000, is coming off a handicap score at Willowdale. He's also hit the board in two previous Saratoga allowances. British-bred 5-year-old Lydford makes his first U.S. start. Young and jockey Tom Garner purchased the son of Fastnet Rock out of the Ascot Sale in May with the fun idea he could qualify for Royal Ascot's Ascot Stakes Heritage Handicap on the turf, according to the trainer.

“He was the total outsider and finished a hard closing ninth of 19,” Young said. “So we were delighted for him and his owners Devon and Jackie Smith. We had the plan either way of aiming for Saratoga. He has won over hurdles in England with Dan Skelton. Hopefully, he will appreciate the quick ground and pace in front of him that he will see Wednesday, and is fresh enough to come with a run. He is very straightforward. Just hope he takes it all in and stays relaxed.”

Meanwhile, Keri Brion saddles a trio in the Kiser. Atlantic Friends Racing's Theocrat exits a length-and-a-half victory in a 115 ratings handicap at Colonial Downs on July 18. Blue Streak Racing, Meta Horse Racing, and CFC Stables' Going Country is a two-time 2022 winner. He broke his maiden at Tryon, followed by an allowance victory at Middleburg. He finished third in the Green Pastures novice stakes at Iroquois. In three starts in Europe, Irv Naylor's Howyabud earned a win and two seconds, followed by a 10-length romp in an allowance race at Great Meadow in May.

Holwood Stable's 9-year-old veteran Decisive Triumph, who has earned a quarter-million-dollars in 39 races over seven seasons, has two seconds and a third in novice stakes competition this year for trainer Mark Beecher. Rounding out the field is Del Rio Racing's Burn the Evidence, the only mare in the field, trained by Ricky Hendriks. The 5-year-old came over from Europe for the Margaret Currey Henley filly and mare stakes at Iroquois, and ran a sharp second to newly minted G1 winner Down Royal.

Conagher Goes All The Way In Colonial’s Housebuster

Patricia's Hope, LLC and Mark Farrar's Conagher (Jimmy Creed), who broke his maiden one year ago at Colonial Downs, went gate-to-wire in his New Kent, Va., return Monday in the featured $100,000 Housebuster Overnight Handicap. A field of six 3-year-olds competed seven furlongs over the 1 1/4-mile dirt oval.

With the scratch of #1 Scaramouche, Conagher departed from the inside — gate position 2 — and raced there through the opening quarter with regular rider Joe Rocco Jr. in the irons. Leslie Cummings' Exxel, looking for his third straight win, stayed within one-half length of the leader until the top of the stretch at which point Conagher opened up by three. The Michael Tomlinson trainee crossed 2 1/4 lengths the best in 1:21.01 while Marablue Farm and Pegasus Stud's Old Homestead closed to finish second. D. Scott Peck and Bessie Gruwell's No Sabe Nada finished third, another 1 1/4 lengths back.

Conagher was fresh off a runner-up finish in the $250,000 Iowa Derby three weeks ago, which followed a pair of dominant allowance wins at Churchill and Keeneland respectively. All three were on dirt. The consistent colt has finished out of the money only once in nine career starts. His bankroll now stands at $312,353 and this year, is 3-for-5.

“We wanted a nice race between the Iowa Derby and the Jerkens Stakes to set him up without having to work half a dozen times,” said trainer Tomlinson. “We thought it would be a good idea to bring him home to where he broke his maiden. We let him run his race which was faster than I thought. The quarter was pretty quick. I hope he comes out healthy and moves forward like we hope.”

The Housebuster field, ten initially, scratched down to six.

“Anytime you can run in a smaller field, it's good, especially if you're on the fence with an inside post position,” added Tomlinson. “He had the worst of it all the way around. Horses were breathing down his neck the whole way and he still got to run his race. We're proud of him.”

“I just kind of sit there, hang on and go for a ride,” said jockey Rocco Jr. afterwards. “With him, the less I do the better. It's gotten to where he knows what to do. I give him head his head, he runs around there fast, keeps going and outruns them.”

Monday's card marked the debut of the 50 cent “Monday Mid-Atlantic Pick-4” wager which features two races at Monmouth Park and two from Colonial. A total of $45,533 was wagered in the initial pool which paid $54.80. The four races were run in a total of 44 minutes. The bet will be offered every Monday through September 5.
