Derby Winner Harzand Sold To Kilbarry Lodge Stud

The Aga Khan's homebred dual Derby winner Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Hazariya {Ire}, by Xaar {GB}) has been sold to continue his stallion career in Ireland at Kilbarry Lodge Stud.

Trained by Dermot Weld and ridden by Pat Smullen, Harzand overcame a last-minute foot injury scare to win the 2016 G1 Derby to give his owner-breeder a fifth triumph in the Epsom Classic following Shergar (GB), Shahrastani, Kahyasi (Ire) and Sinndar (Ire). He then followed up with victory in the G1 Irish Derby.

Among Harzand's Flat runners this season is the 3-year-old Mostly Cloudy (Ire), whose five consecutive wins since mid-May have shone a light on the stable of his young trainer Gemma Tutty, who now has group-race targets in mind for the progressive stayer. From his first crop, members of which are now four, Harzand has been represented by the David Pipe-trained treble hurdle winner Kolisi (Ire).

Harzand has sired some useful individuals from his initial crops conceived at Gilltown Stud, the oldest of which are now 4-year-olds,” said Pat Downes, Aga Khan Studs Director in Ireland.

“However in recent years he has predominately been supported by the National Hunt division and now moves to Con O'Keeffe's Kilbarry Lodge Stud where I am sure he will continue do very well, given he has stock yet to race out of some talented National Hunt race mares and broodmares.”

Harzand will stand alongside fellow Group 1 winner Success Days (Ire), Diamond Boy (Fr), and the Juddmonte-bred Pillar Coral (GB), a Sadler's Wells half-brother to the late Martaline (GB), at his new home in Co Waterford.

Con O'Keeffe, owner of Kilbarry Lodge Stud, said, “We are thrilled to acquire a horse of the calibre of Harzand for Kilbarry Lodge Stud. A dual Derby winner by the sensational Sea The Stars, he has the physical attributes, race record and pedigree that Irish breeders want in a National Hunt stallion. I have been in touch with Pat Downes over the past few years regarding purchasing this horse and my interest in the horse was strengthened on seeing the quality of his foals at the last two years of National Hunt foal sales. A tough, talented racehorse who achieved a Timeform rating of 126 when winning the Epsom Derby, in conjunction with great bone and presence, Harzand has all the qualities to be an exceptional National Hunt stallion.”

Simple Roulette Tactics

The wheel goes round and round and James Bond is about to score big. Yes, the lure of Roulette is legendary. It’s been featured in movies for decades. The game itself is incredibly easy to play and incredibly easy to mess up and lose your shirt. Today, I’ll give you a couple of simple Roulette tactics to help improve your play and give you a better chance to walk away from the Roulette table a winner. And isn’t winning and fun why we play this great game?

I don’t know about you, but I love when the bets are down and the ball is spinning. The pulse quickens, the hands sweat and all sorts of endorphins are released. Clink, clink, clink, drop, winner! And what makes this game even better is that we get to have this fun experience about once per 1-2 minutes-depending on how fast the game is running. Can’t you just feel it?

It’s Budget Time

Yes, it’s time to become a mini-accountant. The first tactic in winning Roulette is to manage your money-and well. It’s so darn easy to throw chips all over the darn place, which usually results in heavy losses unless you’re a supreme mathematician that can keep track of all the odds and bets.

Never, ever begin a Roulette session without a budget in mind. You should know how much you’re willing to lose-willing, not want-and how much you want to win-realistically. Here’s a great example. I walk up to the Roulette table. I’m willing to spend up to $1,000. I’d like to win $2,000.

What’s this mean? If my $1,000 disappears, I’m done and I walk. If I’m having a good session and I look down and see $3,000 in chips ($1,000 bank and $2,000 winnings), I’ve hit my goal, so I walk. Make goals and keep them.

You Don’t Have To Bet On Everything

Seriously. Just because the Roulette layout is filled with all sorts of lovely betting options doesn’t mean you have to bet them all on each spin-although the casino would love that. Don’t get caught up in the action.

Pick your bets-a small handful at most-and roll with them. You don’t need to cover every possible piece of action and if you do, you’ll lose 99% of the time. Just because you’re betting on 17, doesn’t mean you must bet on black, odd, 1-19, the second column and so forth.

Maximize your hits by keeping your bets to a minimum.

Yes, Roulette is exciting, but it can lead to ruin quickly. Keep these Roulette strategies in mine the next time you go to play. Keep your goals and maximize your bets. Good luck!

Cross Country Pick 5 Includes Saratoga’s Whitney, Harness Racing’s Hambletonian

The New York Racing Association Inc. will host a special cross breed Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday, featuring Grade 1 Thoroughbred action from Whitney Day at Saratoga Race Course and standardbred racing from the Hambletonian card at Meadowlands Racetrack.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Please note, current New York State regulations allow NYRA to accept wagering only on standardbred races that take place in New York. As such, this cross breed Cross Country Pick 5 will not be available on-track at any NYRA facility or to NYRA Bets customers located in New York State. The cross breed Cross Country Pick 5 is available to NYRA Bets customers outside of New York State.

The sequence begins in Race 12 [4:41 p.m. Eastern] at the Meadowlands, the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks for sophomore fillies trotting one-mile. The field of 10, plus two also-eligibles, is led by 9-5 morning line favorite Venerable for trainer Nifty Norman. The daughter of Walner was a last out winner of an Oaks elimination on July 30 as the heavy favorite in the field of eight. Fashion Schooner, the 4-1 second choice, was runner-up in her elimination race two races after Venerable on the July 30 card. Trained by Jim Campbell, the Walner filly won the New Jersey Sire Stakes and Del Miller earlier this year.

Thoroughbreds take center stage for the middle three legs at Saratoga, starting with the Grade 1, $500,000 Longines Test in Race 9 [5:07 p.m.]. Grade 1 Acorn winner Matareya will look to continue her upward trajectory this year around one turn as she tries to secure a second consecutive Grade 1 win. The Brad Cox trainee also won the Grade 2 Eight Belles and Grade 3 Beaumont earlier this year. Hot Peppers, winner of the Grade 3 Victory Ride in her last start, will look to give trainer Rudy Rodriguez a repeat victory in this event, while the New York-bred Sterling Silver will vie for her first graded stakes win for trainer Tom Albertrani.

The Grade 1 action continues in Race 10 [5:43 p.m.] with the $1 million Whitney, offering a “Win and You're In” berth to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic in November at Keeneland to the winner. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher saddles a trio of formidable contenders, led by multiple graded-stakes winner Life Is Good. The son of Into Mischief arrives from a dominant five-length win in the John A. Nerud on July 2 at Belmont Park. Pletcher will also be represented by Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap winner Americanrevolution and Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup victor Happy Saver.

Steep opposition will be provided by Olympiad, who looks to be in good position to score his first top-level victory for Hall of Famer Bill Mott. Olympiad was last seen taking the Grade 2 Stephen Foster over Americanrevolution on July 2 at Churchill Downs.

The penultimate leg will see sophomore turf specialists clash in the Grade 1, $1 million Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational [Race 11, 6:20 p.m.]. The talented field of 11 is led by Grade 1 Caesars Belmont Derby winner Classic Causeway for trainer Ken McPeek. The son of Giant's Causeway was a frontrunning winner of the Belmont Derby last time out in his turf debut, adding to scores in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby and Grade 3 Sam F. Davis earlier this year.

Pletcher brings another trio of top contenders as Annapolis, Emmanuel and Grand Sonata all look to break through at the highest level. Like Classic Causeway, Emmanuel was a graded winner in his first go over the lawn, taking the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge on June 4 at Belmont. Annapolis scored his best win in the Grade 3 Pilgrim last fall while Grand Sonata was last seen finishing a closing fourth to Classic Causeway in the Belmont Derby. European invaders Nations Pride and Stone Age are sure to bring interest.

The sequence closes out with the $1 million Hambletonian for sophomores trotting one-mile in Race 15 [6:28 p.m.]. The Lucas Wallin-trained Rebuff is undefeated in three starts this season and has been installed as the 9-5 morning line favorite. The son of Muscle Hill was last seen taking one of two eliminations on July 30 at Meadowlands by 1 1/4 lengths. He will face the Yonkers Trot Champion Joviality S, one of two fillies in the field; and Jiggy Jog S, the other filly in the field who won the second elimination on the July 30 card.

Equine MediRecord Secures Investment To Expand Business

Equine MediRecord has closed an investment with the Chicago-based private equity firm Merit Holdings for an undisclosed eight-figure amount to drive adoption of its equine welfare and anti-doping platform in Europe, North America and the Middle East, the company announced early Thursday morning. A plan is also in the works to expand the equine technology company's growth and operations team. The investment comes from Merit Holdings through their Inova Group Holdings platform, which also previously acquired Business Infusions, the largest equine veterinary software group in the world.

“It's great to be supported by Inova Group and Business Infusions and that they believe in our goal to promote equine welfare and anti-doping best practices by driving adoption of our Equine MediRecord platform',” said Pierce Dargan, who founded the company with Simon Hillary and Finlay Dargan in 2016. “This funding will help us bring our platform to more horse farms and equine events ensuring equine welfare best practices are being adopted in Europe, North America, the Middle East and beyond.”
