Blue Stripe Runs Away From Shedaresthedevil in Clement Hirsch

Pozo de Luna's Blue Stripe (Arg) (Equal Stripes {Arg}), a Group 1 winner in her native country, scored her first top-level win in the big leagues of American racing Saturday, conquering odds-on defending champion Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) and three other rivals in Del Mar's GI Clement L. Hirsch S. The victory in the Win and You're In qualifier punched Blue Stripe's ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Annexing the G1 Criadores last May Hipodromo in Argentina for trainer Nicolas Martin Ferro, the bay was ambitiously spotted in the Distaff in her Stateside debut and finished a well-beaten seventh. Rallying to capture the GII Santa Margarita S. Apr. 30 at Santa Anita, she was a narrow second in the GII Santa Maria S. there last out June 18.

Sent off as the 53-10 third choice in this scratched-down field, Blue Stripe settled in third as Private Mission (Into Mischief) showed the way by a length and a tail to odds-on Shedaresthedevil through a :23.18 quarter. The pacesetter let it out a bit past a half in :46.82, but the chalk came after her entering the far turn and swept past with ease midway around the bend. Blue Stripe's bid was not far off though, and she challenged Shedaresthedevil going by three-quarters in 1:11.42. Surging to the front straightening into the lane, Blue Stripe slammed the door by the eighth pole and held firm for a two-length success over Desert Dawn (Cupid), who tagged the favorite for second in the final jump.

Pedigree Notes:

Blue Stripe is one of 59 stakes winners, 49 graded/group stakes winners and 24 Grade I/Group 1 winners for influential South American sire Equal Stripes and is his first American Grade I victor. She is a half-sister to multimillionaire and 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize), who sold for $5 million to OXO Equine two days later at Fasig-Tipton November. Blues for Sale, a three-time group winner in Argentina, has a 2-year-old Suggestive Boy (Arg) filly named Blue Coast (Arg).

‘Things Were Really Going Bad For Me’: Souper Hoity Toity Knuckles Downs For Husbands, Wins Ontario Colleen

Souper Hoity Toity, under Patrick Husbands, made it two straight stakes wins after taking the $153,400 Ontario Colleen Stakes (G3) Saturday at Woodbine.

Fresh off a score in the Selene Stakes (G3) on July 2, Souper Hoity Toity, a bay daughter of Uncle Mo out of Town Tour, by Speightstown, dug deep to make the grade in the one-mile turf Ontario Colleen for 3-year-old fillies.

Ladywearsthering, sent off as the 9-5 choice, broke running from the outside and grabbed the early lead, as longshot Guileful, to her outside, settled into second, with 27-1 Love to Run nestled into third spot. Super Hoity Toity, second choice on the tote board at 4-1, was fifth of nine through the opening quarter reached in :24.33.

It was status quo for the top trio, as Ladywearsthering, impressive in her winning debut on July 2, continued to roll along on the front end, holding a head advantage over Guileful after a half in :47.68.

Vergara, with David Moran in the irons, confronted Ladywearsthering in early stretch, eventually wresting the lead away from her rival, as Souper Hoity Toity, who appeared stalled in the turn for home, began to gather momentum with an energetic late burst.

At the wire, the Mark Casse trainee poked a head in front of a game Vergara, while Ladywearsthering finished third. Love to Run, also conditioned by Casse, was fourth.

The final time over a firm E.P. Taylor Turf Course was 1:35.01.

At one point, Husbands thought he had little shot at hitting the board.

“She spit the bit on me, and I could not get her going. Things were really going bad for me. I had no horse. I said, 'You know what? I'm not going around. I can find a way through the crowd.' And then she got gutsy by the eighth pole. At the eighth pole, I was on a different horse. But she loves to win. She's all class. She's a legit filly.”

Owned by Live Oak Plantation, Souper Hoity Toity, bred in Kentucky by Dr. Richard Holder and Coolmore, now has four wins from six starts.

Souper Hoity Toity returned $10.30.

Fulsome Captures West Virginia Governor’s Stakes, Caps Three Stakes Wins For Cox, Lopez At Mountaineer

Though the Brad Cox-trained Home Brew finished fourth in the West Virginia Derby (G3) after a troubled start, Cox had another banner day Saturday at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort . As was the case in 2018, Cox won three stakes, including the $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Stakes (G3).

All three were ridden by Paco Lopez, who came in from Monmouth Park for five mounts, all trained by Cox.

Juddmonte Farms' homebred Fulsome capped it off with a 1 ¼-length score in the Governor's Stakes. The 3-year-old Into Mischief colt was sixth but never far back in a bunched field and took over at the top of the stretch. The time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:43.48 and the winner paid $3.40.

Fulsome, a three-time Grade 3 stakes winner before his first trip to Mountaineer, now has four, and he cleared the $1 million mark in earnings.

“Paco rode a good race,” said Cox assistant Ricky Giannini, who usually handles the duties on West Virginia Derby day. “He didn't have him too far back even though the horse likes to drop back early. Sometimes when he gets clear he loses focus, but Paco said he didn't. He's just a notch below the Grade 1-type of horses but he's very honest and consistent.”

Giannini said several races are on the table for Fulsome—a race at Churchill Downs or the Parx Dirt Mile in September, and the Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland in October.

Cox also won the $75,000 West Virginia Senate President's Cup for fillies and mares at one mile and 70 yards with Adventuring, and the $75,000 West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker's Cup for 3-year-olds and up at one mile and 70 yards with Price Talk. Both races were taken off the turf.

Godolphin homebred Adventuring hadn't raced since December 2021 but had been working regularly at Horseshoe Indianapolis. The 4-year-old Pioneerof the Nile filly has now won on dirt—fast or wet—turf and the synthetic Tapeta surface.

Price Talk, owned by Gaining Ground Racing, was claimed for $80,000 in June and followed up with a near-miss second in an allowance race at Horseshoe Indianapolis for his new connections. The 5-year-old Kitten's Joy gelding prefers grass but has now won twice on dirt.

“It was a good race off the layoff,” Giannini said of Adventuring's effort. “She broke her maiden in an off-the-turf race last year. Paco said she wasn't flat, but she didn't accelerate like she has on the turf. We're looking at a race at Kentucky Downs for her.

“Hopefully there are bigger and better things for (Price Talk). There is a restricted race at Kentucky Downs for him. He has improved a lot since we got him.”

Though four races were transferred to the main track from the turf because of heavy showers in the morning, total pari-mutuel handle on the nine-race Mountaineer program was $2.26 million, up 29.2% from 2021.
