William Buick Storms To 100 Winners In Quest For First Jockeys’ Championship Title

William Buick has stormed to 100 winners faster than ever before as he heads towards his first ever Jockeys' Championship title, with victory aboard Lenormand, trained by Charlie Appleby, at Newmarket racecourse.

Buick is currently 31 winners ahead of nearest rival Hollie Doyle with just over two months of the season remaining, with the winner crowned at QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday, Oct. 15.

However, the 34-year-old is under no illusions of the size of the task ahead as he dreams of a first Champion Jockey title.

“It's always nice to reach 100 winners this early in the season. I am always aiming to ride as many winners as I can but hitting 100 is certainly nice. There is plenty left of the season, and I have to keep looking ahead,” Buick said.

“No matter the size of the margin, it doesn't change how competitive it is. You have to be focused on what you're doing, there is plenty of other important things going on and I just need to keep going and stay focused on trying to get more winners.”

At this stage of the season, Buick is comfortably ahead of how many winners he has had in previous years, while also retaining his best ever strike rate:

Rank: Year: No. of winners 12th August: Rides: Strike rate:
1 2022 100 402 25%*
2 2021 82 389 21%
3 2015 61 310 20%
4 2017 58 262 22%
5 2020 56 235 24%

*as of after 6.15pm race Friday at Newmarket racecourse

While he reaches 100 winners for the third time in the Jockeys' Championship, faster than ever before:

Rank: Year: Date on reaching 100 winners:
1 2022 12th August
2 2021 30th August
3 2020 3rd October

Last year's Champion Trainer Charlie Appleby said of Buick's milestone: “To get to 100 winners in the speed that he's done it in is an achievement in itself and I am delighted to be a part of it. Hopefully we've got a good bit of the season to go, but if he can keep pressing on the way that he is, he will be the man to beat in the Championship.

“It's not just his achievements here in the UK, it's what he does on the global stage as well, and it just shows the horsemanship and the talent that William has. But to be crowned Champion Jockey will be a great achievement by himself, and myself and everyone at Godolphin are very pleased for him.”

Recording 30 winners in the months of both June and July saw Buick pull away from his competitors, with a strike rate of 29% in July particularly impressive, including leading the top jockey standings at the Qatar Goodwood Festival with six wins.

Queen’s Plate Breeder Profile: Global Partnership Brings Rondure To Ontario

Homebreds hold a special place in an owner's heart because you're along for the ride every step of the way. From the mare being confirmed in-foal, to the first time in the gate on race day the journey creates a special connection between human and horse.

When Rondure, a Borders Racing Stable homebred, enters the gate in the 163rd Queen's Plate, he'll be the stable's first starter in Canada's biggest race.

Borders Racing Stable is a partnership of Hazel Bennett and Harry Dobson. Bennett is an investment advisor turned horseperson. Dobson is a Scottish mining executive, and lifelong horse racing fan. The pair were connected in the 1990s via Canadian owner and breeder John Toffan.

“Having a homebred in the Queen's Plate is just so amazing, and I'm so nervous because he does have a really good chance to win,” said Bennett. “And I know with him, if he doesn't win, it won't be because he didn't give his best effort.”

Bennett is a resident of Calgary, Alta., and Dobson has lived in Monaco for over twenty years. Their global partnership choosing to breed and race in Ontario is a testament to the quality of programs in the province.

“We race in Ontario because of the benefits of having an Ontario-bred,” said Bennett. “Getting those (Breeders Awards) in the mail is instrumental for us staying in racing, and Woodbine is such a kind track, and it has the best turf courses in North America.

When Bennett and Dobson began breeding in the 1990s, they had a single broodmare in California. Their story since is a testament to the “it takes a village” adage applying to breeding racehorses.

Currently, they have a band of a dozen broodmares with Ontario breeders Susan Foreman, and Bernard McCormack, and over the years they have developed a friendship with Tanya and John Gunther, of Glennwood Farm.

Tanya – who was responsible for the mating of Triple Crown winner Justify – now advises Bennett on her program. But, when it comes to the mating that produced Rondure, Bennett was the one who spearheaded the endeavor.

The story began when Bennett booked Carat Weight, her personal favorite mare, to Big Blue Kitten, but twice she failed to catch.

“Obviously she didn't like him, and the next top-two we wanted were Oxbow and Keen Ice,” said Bennett. “We already had a mare in foal to Keen Ice, so we picked Oxbow, and she got in foal right away which was great.”

Carat Weight was brought back to Foreman's Tottenham, Ont., farm to foal Rondure, and the rest is history.  The Oxbow colt will enter the Queen's Plate rested and ready to contend. He won the G3 Marine his last time out on July 2 and was first and second in his two additional starts this year.

“For me it's so special because of Carat Weight. If he does well then she does well, and she's my baby,” said Bennett. “She always looked the picture of health and anybody who saw her work thought that she was a colt.  I was able to spend more time with her than some of the others which is why she has been one of my favorites.”

Made In Minnesota Night: Canterbury’s Saturday Card Features Minnesota Derby, Oaks

Canterbury Park's Made in Minnesota night on Saturday features the $100,000 Minnesota Derby and the $100,000 Minnesota Oaks. The one mile and 70 yard main-track derby pushes 3-year-old colts and geldings toward a large purse at a route distance many have yet to try.

Love the Nest is second choice on the morning line at 2-1. The 3-year-old colt is trained by Joel Berndt for leading owner Bob Lothenbach of Wayzata, Minn. He will be ridden by Ry Eikleberry, who was also aboard Love the Nest in his Northern Lights Futurity win Sept. 8, 2021.

Love the Nest began his career at Canterbury Park and returned this season at the end of June.

Trainer Joel Berndt thinks he has improved: “He put on some more muscle mass and mentally he is much more mature.”

Love the Nest last raced in the $60,000 Victor Myers on July 16 where he finished second by one length to Doctor Oscar, the morning line favorite in the Minnesota Derby. Both will be stretching out in distance for the first time.

Canterbury Park Hall of Famer David Van Winkle trains Doctor Oscar as well as Bens Malice who has route distance experience but only on the turf. Both are owned by Pete Mattson of Prior Lake. Doctor Oscar will be ridden by Chad Lindsay. Lindsay has been on for all six career starts with four resulting in victories. Alonso Quinonez rides the late-running Bens Malice.

The one mile and 70 yard Minnesota Oaks features 12 Minnesota-bred fillies, with Brewhouse favored on the morning line at 3-1. Owned by Vicki McGowan and John Mentz, the Mac Robertson-trained undefeated 3-year-old won twice in July including a front-running score in the $60,000 Frances Genter Stakes on July 16. Nik Goodwin will again be aboard Saturday.

McGowan was surprised with how small the filly was after she and Mentz acquired Brewhouse, but is pleased with how she grew over the winter.

“She's fast,” McGowan said. “She seems to work pretty good steadily.” Brewhouse debuted July 2 and won, leading all the way.

McGowan also has two other fillies in the Oaks, but she thinks Brewhouse, who will race at the distance for the first time, “has a shot.” Honey Bella and Gypsy Reward also run under Robertson's training.

The 9-race card also includes two $50,000 stakes for older Minnesota breds. Ready to Runaway is the even-money morning line favorite in the Glitter Star at 1 and 1/16 miles on the dirt for fillies and mares. Ready to Runaway, 2020 Canterbury Horse of the Year, is trained by Robertson and owned by Mentz, and will be ridden by Eikleberry. The six-year-old mare has won this stake the last three years.

The Wally's Choice likewise is run at 1 and 1/16 miles. The 9-5 morning line favorite is Thealligatorhunter, owned by Mattson and trainer Tim Padilla. The 4-year-old gelding won the Minnesota Derby last year and will be ridden by Quinonez.

Hot Shot Kid, Canterbury 2019 Horse of the Year, is also entered in the Wally's Choice with Eikleberry aboard. Owned by the late Warren Bush and trained by Robertson, Hot Shot Kid has earned $676,275 in purses, the second most all time of any horse bred in the state. A win by Hot Shot Kid would push him past the recently retired Mr. Jagermeister's $700,839 in earnings.

Racing begins Saturday at 5 p.m. More information is available at www.canterburypark.com .
