Alpinista Powers Home On Top In Yorkshire Oaks

Kirsten Rausing's Alpinista (GB) powered home to win the Darley Yorkshire Oaks (G1) in decisive fashion at York on Thursday at York Racecourse. The 5-year-old mare earned an automatic starting position in the US$2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 82 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 4-5.

Alpinista scored her first domestic G1 and fifth consecutive top-level success when landing the Darley Yorkshire Oaks. The homebred grey is already a three-time G1 heroine in Germany, and winner of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (G1) in France.

Settled in behind the leaders under jockey Luke Morris, Alpinista cruised to the front down the home straight, before holding off a late challenge from Cazoo Oaks (G1) winner Tuesday (IRE), to whom she was conceding nine pounds. Proving too good for her younger rivals, Alpinista won by 1-length, with Paddy Twomey's La Petite Coco (IRE) 1 ¾-lengths back in third.

Trainer Sir Mark Prescott last celebrated a domestic G1 victory five years ago, when Marsha (IRE) won the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at the same track. Marsha would go on to finish sixth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) at Del Mar in 2017.

Reflecting on his winning mare today, Prescott said: “These are hard to come by for a smallish stable, every five or six years we'll have a good one come along and it's tremendous when it happens.

“We trained this one's dam, grand-dam and great-dam so it's been a marvelous family to be a part of. Miss Rausing [owner] was very keen to come here as she (Alpinista) hadn't won a Group 1 in England, so she's done it all now.”

All roads for the winner now lead to ParisLongchamp for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), with Prescott adding: “The Arc has always been her aim. Last year we rather patted ourselves on the back winning three Group 1s in Germany but when the one behind us [Torquator Tasso] came and won the Arc, we thought we might not have been as clever as we thought.”

Alpinista, a grey daughter of Frankel (GB) out of the Hernando (FR) mare Alwilda (GB), completed the 1 ½ miles in 2:29:92 over a course listed as good.

Alpinista becomes the fifth horse to earn an automatic berth into the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf in 2022, joining: Captain's Ransom (SAF), winner of the Cartier Paddock Stakes (G1) in South Africa; Sodashi (JPN), who captured the Victoria Mile (G1) in Japan; Ola Perfecta (PER), who won the Gran Premio Pamplona (G1) in Peru, and Dalika (GER), winner of the Beverly D. Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Alpinista to start in the US$2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland, which will be run at 1 3/16 miles. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 24 to receive the rewards.

Queen’s Plate Breeder Profile: Causin’ Mayhem Continues Homebred Legacy For Chiefswood

Chiefswood Stable, one of Canada's leading owners and breeders and the nom de course of Robert and Mark Krebil, has visited the Queen's Plate winner's circle before. In 2004 their homebred Niigon was victorious with Hall of Fame jockey Rob Landry in the irons.

At the 163rd edition of the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, Landry will fill a different role for the Schomberg, Ont., operation as the outfit's General Manager. The goal remains the same, cross the finish line first with a homebred.

“It would be nice to win the Queen's Plate for them as the General Manager, and would be something special,” said Landry. “They are great people to work for, and they have invested a lot of money and deserve to win these type of races.”

Chiefswood's entry into the Plate is living proof of this investment. Causin' Mayhem is the son of leading sire Into Mischief and enters the Plate at 6-1 on the morning line.

The bay colt is a second generation Chiefswood homebred, out of an unraced Distorted Humor mare Five N Forty. To win Canada's richest race with a horse you've been with from foaling is the ultimate goal for the breed to race operation.

“To win with a homebred is really gratifying,” said Landry. “That's what you aim for, you want to win the big races. Not to mention we bred the mother as well. She never made it to the races, but she showed us a lot of talent.”

That talent has been evident in Five N Forty's offspring. Including Causin' Mayhem she has produced five starters, and four winners. Her top performer is Ghostly Presence, a Ghostzapper filly who was on the Canadian Triple Tiara trail in 2017.

Ghostly Presence was third in the Bison City Stakes and picked up a pair of black type wins later in her 3-year-old campaign.

The success of the family, and what he's shown so far has Landry confident Causin' Mayhem will put forth a good showing on Sunday, despite entering the gate as one of the more lightly raced entrants. The Todd Pletcher trainee's third-place finish in the Plate Trial on July 24 was
just his third lifetime start.

“He's inexperienced but we believe he has a lot of talent,” said Landry. “I believe he will move forward. Todd was happy with the race, and he thought he would move forward off of that. He has the pedigree to be a good horse.”

Regardless of the result on Sunday what Causin' Mayhem will have in common with his mother, and other Chiefswood horses is a dedicated team looking for his home when he eventually retires from racing. The Chiefswood Aftercare Program run by Stacey Krebil seeks to find their retired racehorses forever homes.

Dettori To Ride Torquator Tasso In Grosser Preis Von Baden

Frankie Dettori has been booked to ride 2021 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in a title defence of the Sept. 4 G1 Grosser Preis von Baden. The chestnut's regular jockey, Rene Piechulek, has been claimed to ride the Sarah Steinberg-trained Mendocino (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) for owner Stall Salzburg in the 1 1/2-mile feature. Torquator Tasso was second to Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. at the end of July.

“Yes, it is true Frankie Dettori will ride Torquator Tasso at Baden-Baden,” said part-owner Peter-Michael Endres. “Mr. Piechulek has to ride for his owner and therefore we are very happy that Frankie is going to ride our horse. We have spoken to him and he said it is a privilege to ride the horse.

“It's our plan to go to Baden-Baden and then if the race goes OK we go to the Arc again.”
