Flaming Rib Supplemented To July Cup

Flaming Rib (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}), the G1 Commonwealth Cup second, has been supplemented to the G1 Darley July Cup by trainer Hugo Palmer. A listed winner last October, the 3-year-old colt ran sixth in the G3 Greenham S. in April, but returned to form with a 1 1/2-length victory in the May 6 conditions stakes at Chester. Back in action at Haydock later that month, Flaming Rib missed by only a neck when second in the G2 Sandy Lane S., his final start prior to his good run at Royal Ascot.

Palmer said of the £36,000 supplementary entry, “It was a great run at Royal Ascot. When these entries came out he'd just won a conditions race for us at Chester and those that were entered at the first stage I think paid around £7,000 [it actually costs a total of £7,500 to run for horses entered when the race closed in May].

“So while it was expensive for us at this stage, we'd rather pay £36,000 and go in there as an 8-1 poke than pay seven [thousand] only to get stuffed in the Sandy Lane. It's changed a lot since then, he ran a great race in the Sandy Lane and an even better one in the Commonwealth Cup.

“[Part-owner] Michael [Owen] was joking the other day when I told him that the supplementary fee was £36,000 as the horse only cost £35,000. It's proof that relatively inexpensive horses can make their mark felt at a high level on a big Saturday.

“We've got no reason to think he won't run a big race in the July Cup. He's the fifth favourite and the four horses ahead of him in the market have got reasons to be there. We've got to beat our twice conqueror in Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) and the horses that filled the first three places in the Platinum Jubilee as well. We can only worry about our horse and I'm really looking forward to running him.”

He added, “I think despite what the Australian and the Japanese guys seem to be telling us, Newmarket is a much sharper track than Ascot–you go down to the six furlong point at Ascot and you're staring at a mountain to the grandstand. At the six-furlong point on the July Course, you're going downhill all the way until you start to climb in the final furlong and a half or so.

“It's a much sharper track and it's a track that favours prominent racers and while Flaming Rib does not need to make the running he is also not a hold up horse. He likes to wear his heart on his sleeve and race on the front end and he's a horse who doesn't like to lie down when he's beaten.”

Palmer also spoke of the success he's enjoyed since taking up his new role at Michael Owen's Manor House Stables, and said, “I'm loving the role–the team I've brought up with me and the team I've met here have worked fantastically hard and everyone has really pulled together.

“There have been some tricky moments–nothing in life is easy–but the fact that the horses have, touch wood, continually run their races and are showing up on the big days makes the whole thing worthwhile. It's the reason we do it and it's thrilling.

“Michael owns a leg of this horse and it's lovely that he runs in his colours because they are the stable colours, which is tremendous. This is what racing needs–it needs the enthusiasm of owners and to have English owners with real enthusiasm and top-class horses is very exciting because for all that British racing is enormously grateful for the patronage from the Middle East and further afield, it does sometimes make racing seem a little bit fanciful for English people to be involved.

“A healthy thriving industry will have a huge amount of horses owned by natives of this country this well.”

Equibase Analysis: Stone Age Gets Top Billing In Belmont Derby Invitational

This Saturday's Grade 1, $1 million Caesars Belmont Derby Invitational drew a big field of 13 including five European imports trying to duplicate the feat of 2021 Belmont Derby winner Bolshoi Ballet (IRE).

Among that group Stone Age (IRE) may be the first to look at as the colt won the Group 3 Derby Trial Stakes in May before a sixth of 17 finish in the G1 Cazoo Derby last month. Nations Pride (IRE) finished eighth in the same race, three lengths behind Stone Age (IRE) following four straight wins going back to last October. Royal Patronage (FR) finished 16th in the Derby but just prior to that finished second in the G2 Dante Stakes. The European contingent also includes Machete (FR), who finished second in the Group 3 Prix de Guiche in May before a seventh of 15 finish in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club Stakes last month. Although bred in Kentucky, Implementation has run seven times in Europe with his best effort being a third place finish, just a quarter of a length behind Machete (FR) in the Prix du Guiche.

Stolen Base leads the North American based contingent, having earned his biggest win to date when victorious in the G2 American Turf Stakes in May. Emmanuel and Napoleonic War ran similarly well when first and second, respectively, in the G2 Pennine Ridge Stakes on the Belmont turf last month. Sy Dog won the G3 Transylvania Stakes in April before a third place effort behind Stolen Base in the American Turf and has potential to improve, as does third place Pennine Ridge finisher Limited Liability. Grand Sonata won the G3 Kitten's Joy Stakes on turf in February before a runner-up effort behind Sy Dog in the Transylvania and a third place finish in the Audubon Stakes in June and is yet another proven competitive at this level. Classic Causeway tries turf for the first time in the Belmont Derby after eight races on dirt, including wins in the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes and G2 Tampa Bay Derby earlier this year. Last but certainly not least, Tiz the Bomb returns to turf after four races on other surfaces, with one of his best efforts coming last fall on the grass when second of 13 in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Although only won by European horses making their first starts in North America in two of the last 10 years, this year's Belmont Derby Invitational lends itself to being won by one of the five European invaders this year for a number of reasons. First and foremost, none of the horses based in the states have ever run the 1 1/4-mile distance on turf and only one horse, Classic Causeway, has ever run the distance, having finished 11th in this year's Kentucky Derby.

With that in mind, Stone Age (IRE) gets top billing in this year's race based on the fact that he's following an identical pattern to last year's winner, Bolshoi Ballet (IRE), who was also trained by Aiden O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore. Like Bolshoi Ballet (IRE), Stone Age IRE) last ran in the Cazoo Derby, finishing sixth of 17 compared to seventh of 11 for Bolshoi Ballet (IRE). Also like Bolshoi Ballet (IRE), Stone Age (IRE) won the Derby Trial Stakes prior to running in the Cazoo Derby. That effort earned a 112 ™ Equibase® Speed Figure, which is the second highest earned by any horse in the field behind the 117 figure Machete (FR) earned when seventh in his most recent race. Previously, Stone Age (IRE) earned a career-best 113 figure when second in the Criterium de Saint Cloud Stakes last October. The Derby Trial, as well as the race Stone Age (IRE) won prior to that, were both the same distance in a counter-clockwise fashion as the Belmont Derby. Therefore repeating either of those two efforts is good enough to win this race.

Royal Patronage (FR) was much further back in the Cazoo Derby compared to Stone Age (Ire) but his effort just prior to that, in May, was as good as the race Stone Age (IRE) ran that same month. That was a second of eight finish in the Dante Stakes, where the colt found a path with three furlongs left to run and closed well for second behind Desert Crown, who came back to win the Cazoo Derby. Last September, Royal Patronage (FR) won the very important Royal Lodge Stakes as well, with those two efforts earning 110 and 108 ™ figures on par with the 110 and 112 figures Stone Age (IRE) has earned this year. He also earned a 113 figure when eighth of 15 in the Two Thousand Guineas this past April. The Dante Stakes was run at the distance of a mile and five-sixteenths, so we know the distance of the Belmont Derby will be no problem. Getting local jockey Joel Rosario, Royal Patronage (FR) should be taken very seriously as a contender.

Nations Pride (IRE) showed a lot of promise and talent in his second start as a 3-year-old in April when drawing off to win the Newmarket Stakes with a 106 figure. That was his second straight win at the distance of the Belmont Derby. He then finished eighth in the Cazoo Derby (with a 108 figure), three lengths behind Stone Age (IRE) and well ahead of Royal Patronage (FR). Getting the services of world class jockey Frankie Dettori, it must be noted Nations Pride (IRE) is trained by Charles Appleby, who has a phenomenal record when shipping horses from Europe to race in North America. According to a Race Lens query, in the last five years, Appleby has a record of 13-6-2 in 22 races, including 3-3-2 in eight races on the New York Circuit consisting of Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga. Except for that eighth place effort in his most recent race, Nations Pride (IRE) was never worse than second in five races and after a runner-up debut last summer won four in a row, each by wide margins. That provides enough reason to believe this colt could also be very competitive in the Belmont Derby.

Machete (FR) gets honorable mention as he comes into this race off a career-best effort even though seventh in the Prix du Jockey Club Stakes last month on the same weekend as the Cazoo Derby. That earned a 117 figure because of the high class nature of the race, and like the Dante Stakes in which Royal Patronage (FR) finished second, the Prix du Jockey Club was run at the longer distance of a mile and five-sixteenths, so this colt could also give a good account of himself.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Classic Causeway (104), Emmanuel (99), Grand Sonata (94), Implementation (104), Limited Liability (96), Napoleonic War (97), Stolen Base (101), Sy Dog (97) and Tiz the Bomb (109).

Win contenders:
Stone Age (IRE)
Royal Patronage (FR)
Nations Pride (IRE)

Impressive Ascot Winner Inspiral Will Have Frankie Dettori Aboard In Friday’s Falmouth

There are few certainties at Group 1 level, but the Cheveley Park Stud's massively impressive Royal Ascot winner Inspiral will look the nearest thing to one when she takes on four rivals at Newmarket on Friday in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, ridden again by Frankie Dettori despite a decidedly rocky three weeks.

It was Inspiral who came to Dettori's rescue, albeit only temporarily, on day four of a fraught Coronation Stakes, and it is fitting that he returns to the Gosden fold on the filly after their brief, but very public, break up in the latest stage of the 35-race QIPCO British Champions Series as part of the Fillies & Mares category.

Dettori was completing a hat-trick of increasingly high-profile wins on the Frankel filly when she took the step up to Group 1 readily in her stride in last year's Fillies' Mile, and he also had a major role in the decision to sidestep a QIPCO 1000 Guineas, which formlines suggest was hers for the taking, if only she had come to hand in time.

Waiting for Royal Ascot paid off handsomely, for Inspiral's stunning 4 3/4-length win from the previously unbeaten American filly Spendarella and the 2-year-old Group 1 winners Discoveries and Tenebrism was one of the week's highlights.

Nannina, the Stud's last Coronation Stakes winner before Inspiral, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of 50-1 chance Rajeem when bidding to follow up in the Falmouth Stakes, but Lovers Knot (1998), Integral (2014), and Veracious (2019) have all won the race for the Cheveley Park Stud and none had credentials anywhere near as compelling as those of the unbeaten Inspiral.

In the last few years the Cheveley Park Stud has enjoyed more than 20 Grade 1 jumps wins with a hand-picked team, but that was a phenomenon driven by David Thompson, who died in late 2020, and the silks are traditionally much more closely associated with top-class performers on the Flat – the side of the operation which has always been the passion of Thompson's widow Patricia. Inspiral is a prime example of her efforts, for her dam, granddam, and great granddam all raced and bred successfully for the Stud.

Chris Richardson, the Stud's managing director, said: “All through the spring Frankie was saying, 'she's not there, she's not there,' and we listened to what he had to say. We took a long-term view and looked to the Coronation Stakes, which is one of Patricia Thompson's favorite races, having won it three times before. We waited until she was cherry ripe and we were rewarded when she won impressively.

“Inspiral hasn't done much since then, but all has been well with her and she enjoyed a nice stretch on Saturday with Robert Havlin on board. Frankie knows her well, having ridden her in all her races bar her first, and Mrs. Thompson is pleased that John (Gosden, joint trainer) is happy for him to ride her again on Friday. The Stud, and Flat racing, has always been her love, and she embraces every aspect of it.”

Sibila Spain travels from France for the second time in a month, with trainer Christopher Head praying there is no repeat of the stalls antics which saw her withdrawn at the start of Royal Ascot's Duke Of Cambridge Stakes when a well-fancied 11-2 chance and due to be his first runner in England.

Head's father Freddy won the 2009 Falmouth with the brilliant Goldikova – who incidentally beat two good Cheveley Park fillies in Heaven Sent and Spacious – while his aunt Criquette Head-Maarek, grandfather Alec Head, who died just a fortnight ago, and great grandfather Willie Head also all operated at the highest level both in France and in England.

He knows that Inspiral will be hard to beat, but he has been itching to have a runner over here since first taking out a license at the end of 2018, and he is confident Sibila Spain will not let him down, provided she behaves in the stalls.

He said: “I was excited at Royal Ascot but unfortunately she was scratched at the start. It had never been an issue before, and she has since passed a stalls test at Chantilly.

“Of course she is going to encounter even better fillies here in a Group 1, but she has already won a Group 2 in France (Saint-Cloud's Prix Du Muguet) and this is the path we want to stay on now. We will see what she is capable of doing, but she is a filly I really love and she always does her best.

“I always wanted to be running in the UK as soon as I had the opportunity and Sibila Spain is my first Group horse. She is very strong mentally, and she can race from the front, as she did when fourth in last year's Diane from a stall which gave her no choice, but I prefer her to wait in the pack, and now that she is racing back at a mile it's a pleasure to see her run that way. It won't worry her if the ground is fast.”

Head, who was working for his father when Goldikova won at Newmarket and was assisting his aunt when she had Treve, has built his team up to around 30 and said: “We want to show we are here to stay and that we can maintain the family tradition as one of the good trainers around Chantilly, which is important. At the start the family name could sometimes be a weight, but now I'm not thinking about it and I'm taking my own path.

“I was assisting my father when Goldikova came to Newmarket so I had to stay at home. I was also assistant to my aunt for the last year of Treve, as it was important for me to be around good horses if I was to train good ones myself.”

Sandrine, who won the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes here 12 months ago, finished a close fifth in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas but only seventh behind Inspiral in the Coronation Stakes. Her trainer Andrew Balding is expecting the return to a straight track to help and said: “Sandrine didn't take the bend very well at Ascot, and that cost her a few lengths, but she did very well in the circumstances. She's in great form.”

Ralph Beckett's Prosperous Voyage finished three places ahead of Sandrine in the Guineas, but two places behind her at Royal Ascot. She was beaten just a neck by Cachet at Newmarket, and most years that sort of form would put her right in the reckoning here. However, Inspiral beat her easily last year when she was second in both the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile.

The field is completed by last year's unlucky-in-running fifth Primo Bacio, who has suffered respiratory infections since then but took a step in the right direction with last month's third behind Saffron Beach in the Duke Of Cambridge at Royal Ascot. She will appreciate the quick ground and trainer Ed Walker is expecting a big run from her.
