‘Win And You’re In’ Bing Crosby Draws Field of 10; Country Grammer, Mandaloun Top San Diego

Topped by a pair of deep and deeply competitive stakes races, Del Mar will present a sparkling 11-race program Saturday on Day 6 of its 83rd summer race meet. First post on the afternoon is 2 p.m.

The two stakes – the 77th running of the Grade 1, $400,000 Bing Crosby Stakes and the 81st edition of the Grade 2, $300,000 San Diego Handicap – have drawn stellar fields with 10 signed on for the six-furlong Crosby and nine on the roster for the mile and one-sixteenth San Diego.

The Crosby has the additional cachet of being a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” race, one of six that will be run at the summer meet. The Crosby winner receives a guaranteed berth, with all fees paid, in the $2 million Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland in November.

The Bing Crosby, named of course for Del Mar's founder, had its purse enhanced by $100,000 this year, surely a factor in the topnotch crew it has lured.

A trio of crackerjack sprinters head the lineup in Michael Lund Petetsen's Shaaz, Slam Dunk Racing and Madaket Stables' Florida shipper Drain the Clock and Kretz Racing's American Theorem.

The San Diego, too, has a trio of sharpsters who will draw the most attention in Zendan Racing Stables and Winstar Farm's Country Grammer, Kentucky shipper Mandaloun, who is owned by Juddmonte, and Fox Hill Farms or Sienna Farm's South American ace Royal Ship.

Here are the full field for the stakes from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:

Bing Crosby Stakes

  2. Shaaz (Juan Hernandez, 7/2)
  3. Chuck and Maribeth Sandford's Bagboss (Umberto Rispoli, 8-1)
  4. Drain the Clock (Drayden Van Dyke, 4-1)
  5. David Bernsen and Mia Familia Racing's Principe Carlo (Victor Espinoza, 6-1)
  6. It Pays to Dream Racing Stable, et al's Howbeit (Abel Cedillo, 20-1)
  7. Brown, Klein or Lebherz's Letsgetlucky (Tyler Baze, 6-1)
  8. Diamond 100 Racing Club, DP Racing, et al's Diamond Oops (Ryan Curatolo, 12-1)
  9. American Theorem (Joe Bravo 4-1)
  10. Gary Barber's Get Her Number (Ramon Vazquez, 12-1)

San Diego Handicap

  1. Cannon Thoroughbreds' There Goes Harvard (Diego Herrera, 5-1)
  2. Pegram, Watson and Weitman's Defunded (Cedillo, 5-1)

  6. C R K Stable's Parnelli (Espinoz, 15-1)
  7. Hronis Racing's Tripoli (Tiago Pereira, 6-1)
  8. Country Grammer (John Velazquez, 5/2)
  9. Royal Ship (Mike Smith, 4-1)

The Bing Crosby will be Race 8 on the card with a post of about 5:40 p.m. and the San Diego will be Race 10 going at about 6:40 p.m.

Crosby starter Shaaz has been training up the proverbial storm out of the Bob Baffert barn. The 4-year-old Uncle Mo colt has only started four times, but he's won three (one through a disqualification) and boasts a trio of bullet works at Del Mar coming into the dash.

Drain the Clock, whose last start was in the Smile Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream on July 2 where he showed speed but fell back to finish fourth. The fast son of Maclean's Music races for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. and is a seven-time winner of nearly $700,000.

American Theorem comes into the heat off a photo-finish tally in the Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita on May 29. That race was the biggest score yet for the ridgling by American Pharoah.

In the San Diego, which veteran observers at Del Mar are saying is one of the best editions of the race ever, Country Grammer appears to be a solid favorite. The Tonalist 5-year-old horse comes into the race off a smashing score in the $12 million Dubai World Cup back in March, a triumph that boosted his bankroll to $10,837,320. He's been prepping steadily for trainer Baffert for this comeback.

Mandaloun, an Into Mischief 4-year-old colt with more than $2 million in earnings, finished second in the 2021 Kentucky Derby, but when the horse who was first across the line – Medina Spirit – was subsequently disqualified for a drug issue, Mandaloun was moved up to first. His last start was a fourth-place finish in the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs on July 2.

Royal Ship, a Brazilian-bred 6-year-old, is a seven-time winner of nearly $400,000. He was third in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita on May 30 in his most recent effort. Hall of Fame rider Smith will be aboard him for the 11th consecutive time.

The San Diego is seen as the key prep for Del Mar's foremost race, the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic, which this year will be contested at its usual mile and one-quarter on Saturday, September 3.

Desert Crown Unlikely To Run Again This Season

Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is doubtful to run again this season but connections of the brilliant G1 Derby winner are committed to keeping him in training next year.

Sir Michael Stoute's sixth Derby winner has not raced since his Epsom triumph and Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Saeed Suhail, delivered the news on Friday's Nick Luck Daily Podcast that the colt was unlikely to reappear again in 2022.

“The difficult thing is, would he [Stoute] have time to prepare him [for the major races in the autumn] and that probably is doubtful,” Raymond said.

Asked if he was confident that Desert Crown would be back next year, Raymond added, “One hundred per cent yes, he'll definitely be back next year. I don't know what the programme is but I know Saeed would like to take him to Dubai for the Sheema Classic but that's entirely up to him and Sir Michael.

“The trouble with the [G1] Sheema Classic is, it's a great race and you get lots of kudos for winning it over there, but you miss so many early-season races because you have to give them a good rest afterwards.

“Saeed is looking towards Dubai with him and we're pretty confident that he'll get there.”

Shifts In Casino Gambling Trends

The internet’s ability to blur boundaries and society’s acceptance of casino gambling and sports betting ultimately shed light on the inconsistencies and loopholes of American gambling laws. From the makeshift sportsbook stalls in Nevada, most sports betting activities shifted operations and exploited the possibilities of cyberspace in the mid-1990s. At present, there are numerous online gaming sites catering to sports betting and casino gambling based in countries like Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Ireland.

Despite overseas-based operations, the lion’s share of the revenues and clients of these sites come from American states. In fact, recent studies show that these online casino gambling and sports betting sites earn more than legal casinos operating in Nevada. The profits of online gambling and betting sites are estimated at $70 billion for 2005 alone. This is a staggering amount compared to the reported $2 billion from Nevada casinos. This is enough to overthrow the three-decade reign of Nevada casinos from the 60’s to the early 90’s. Considering that online sportsbook and casino sites have been operating for less than two decades, they are clearly a threat to the thriving Nevada gambling scene.

For decades, Las Vegas is the only place legal for gambling operations. Atlantic City followed suit and made casino gambling legal; the following decades saw the proliferation of state lotteries, card clubs, gaming ships, Indian casinos, and off-track betting salons across the nation. But still, these developments are not enough to compete with online gambling. The industry of online gambling is not even swayed by staunch opposition from legal US casinos. The gambling laws of the United States of America do not help, too. They vary widely from the different states. Most states ban all forms of gambling while some make exceptions. Inconsistencies like these make it easy for online operators to find and use loopholes in the law. The American Gaming Association maintains a defensive stand regarding online gambling. The association pushes for federal laws on the regulation of online gambling. According to them, the unregulated nature of the online gambling industry is its advantage over traditional casinos; regulating it puts both camps on even footing.

But despite this stand, some Nevada casinos are following the old stand-by: if you cannot beat them, join them. November 1998 saw the start of a new trend; traditional casinos started acquiring off-shore online casino gambling companies to improve their profits. An affiliate of the Hilton Hotels absorbed the Australian online sportsbook http://Centrebet.com. Other Nevada casinos followed and this cycle again spawned a new barrage of debates.

Contrary to their earlier dislike of the online gambling industry, the traditional casinos set their sights higher. They are now pressuring the Congress to pass a law that legalizes online gambling. This is done in an effort to lower production costs; legalization means that they could now shift their operations in the US. Harrah’s and MGM Mirage, the two leading casinos in Nevada and undoubtedly owning their own online gambling sites, lead the casinos in requesting for the regulation of online gaming. Clearly, this move requesting for regulation does not intend to put traditional casinos at par with online sites anymore. The competition shifted between independent online sites and Nevada casino-owned sites. A move to regulate translates to double profits for the Nevada casinos.

Whatever comes out of this new development in casino gambling, gamers are still assured of their gambling fix. Possibly, if the proposed regulation is approved, there would be more security in betting online since it is now under US laws. Like before, casino gambling proves itself to be a dynamic and ever-changing industry.
