Full Fields Set For Steeplechase Summer Kickoff At Colonial Downs

The National Steeplechase Association summer schedule at the flat tracks gets underway on Monday at Colonial Downs, with two rich $40,000 maiden special weights hurdle races, including one for fillies and mares, in New Kent, Va., about a half-hour East of Richmond.

Here's a link to the overnight entries: https://nationalsteeplechase.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Colonial-July11-WedEntries.pdf.

The races are the first of 24 summer contests, with purses totaling $1.3 million, scheduled through Sept. 5, with two additional stakes, the $150,000 Lonesome Glory (Grade 1) and $75,000 William Entenmann novice stakes, on tap for opening day at Belmont Park on Sept. 15.

In yet another sign that the sport is inching back toward normalcy following two challenging years precipitated by the pandemic, the summer horses in training list includes 170 runners, from maidens, claimers, allowance and handicap horses to novice and open stakes stars. That's substantially more than the 117 on the list at the same time in 2021. The numbers are a solid indication that owners and trainers have been able to restock their barns and are ready to run.

Steeplechase racing at Colonial Downs will consist of two races every Monday through Labor Day, to be run at the beginning of the card. Wagering is not available. You can live stream for free via the NSA website, www.nationalsteeplechase.com, at 12:15 p.m. and 12:50.

Steeplechasing commences at historic Saratoga Race Course on July 20, with the $150,000 A.P. Smithwick (Grade 1), one of seven jump races carded for the Spa. All will be run as the first race on Wednesdays, with a 1:05 p.m. post time. NYRA races are broadcast live on Fox2 TV, with replays available on NYRA website, https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/replays. You can also live stream via the NSA website..

Steeplechasing's biggest names are all targeting stakes at either Saratoga or Colonial.

Leading 2022 trainer Leslie Young has heavy hitters in Sharon Sheppard's Redicean, winner of the G2 David Semmes Memorial at Great Meadow in May, and recent European import Pistol Whipped, owned by Anthony and Mark Speelman. Pistol Whipped, a National Hunt Cup winner for legendary trainer Nicky Henderson, shipped stateside and finished second to Snap Decision in the G1 Iroquois in Nashville in May. Young has both primed for the Smithwick. Young has another newcomer, Song For Someone, a highly accomplished 7-year-old German-bred, who runs in Gil Johnston's orange and brown silks. Song for Someone is likely to run in the Sheppard or at Belmont, according to Young.

Keri Brion, who trains last year's Eclipse Award winner, The Mean Queen, said that the mare is recovered from a minor injury that kept her sidelined this spring, and plans to run her in August, either in the Sheppard, or at Colonial (possibly the Randy Rouse filly and mare stakes). Brion also has 2022 stakes winners in Hudson River Farm's Iranistan, who upset Snap Decision in the G2 Temple Gwathmey, Irv Naylor's French Light, (Queen's Cup), and Atlantic Friends Racing's Historic Heart, (Carolina Cup), who are expected to start in the Smithwick.

Jack Fisher said he's pointing stable superstar, Bruton Street-US' Snap Decision, winner of the Iroquois, to the $150,000 Colonial Cup, a flat race on the turf at 1 ½ miles at Colonial on July 25, followed by the G1 Jonathan Sheppard at Saratoga, the meet's crowning jewel, on Aug. 17. Fisher's other Bruton Street juggernaut, the 2020 Eclipse-Award winner Moscato, is now 11, and thus ineligible to compete at Saratoga under NYRA rules.

Trainer Kate Dalton is considering runs at both Colonial and Saratoga for Joseph Fowler's magnificent mare Down Royal, recent winner of the Margaret Currey Henley filly and mare stakes at Iroquois. She'll be nominated to the Smithwick, and “if she's all well and happy she'll probably try the Rouse (a $100,000 filly and mare stake on Aug. 22), also.”

Cyril Murphy is nominating Irv Naylor's Chief Justice, winner of the $50,000 Green Pastures novice stakes at Iroquois, to the Smithwick, while stablemate Belfast Banter, a graded stakes-placed winner of $186,000 who finished second in his U.S. debut in the Semmes, is aiming for the Sheppard.

Riley Mott to Start Own Stable

Hall of Famer Bill Mott's son, Riley Mott, will go out on his own as a trainer later this year after serving as his father's assistant for the past eight years. The younger Mott has been a familiar face of his father's stable, often traveling with the barn's stars to major races around the world. The 30-year-old took out his own training license in Florida this winter.

“I learned from an early age that training horses wasn't just a business, but a lifestyle,” said Mott. “I walked my first horse when I was 6-years-old and immediately developed a love for the game.”

Mott began rubbing horses and walking hots in his father's barn, eventually ran the shedrow, and was finally named assistant trainer in 2014. He also majored in economics at the University of Kentucky. His father is not only in the Hall of Fame, but is also a three-time winner of the Eclipse Award for outstanding trainer and has trained numerous champions, including two-time Horse of the Year Cigar.

“Following in my dad's footsteps is something I think about every day,” said Mott. “I hold him in such high regard both personally and professionally. I often use his accomplishments as motivation to step up my game as both a horseman and a human.”

He continued: “I have learned so much from working under the boss and everyone else in our operation, but by far the most important lesson I've learned from him is that no matter what, it's all about the horses. You strive to look out for your owners' best interests and provide a healthy working environment for your staff, but to do that you must do right by your horses. You do that, and the rest will follow.”

Mott said that several of his father's owners have offered to support him with horses. He has also started to pick up new clients.

He and his wife, Megan, reside in Saratoga during the summer months, but plan to move to Hot Springs for the upcoming Oaklawn meet and then to Kentucky for the rest of the year. They have a 9-month-old daughter, Margot.

Kingman’s Epictetus Oozes Class In TDN Rising Star Display

George Strawbridge's 2-year-old colt Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}–Thistle Bird {GB}, by Selkirk) was the pick of a baker's dozen on breeding, but not so in the betting, for Friday's Weatherbys British EBF Maiden S. at Newmarket and made a mockery of 11-1 odds with a 'TDN Rising Star' display in a heat won last term by subsequent G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere runner-up and G3 Jersey S. victor Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}). The 2022 G1 Derby entry was swiftly into a comfortable rhythm behind the leaders and raced on the bridle through halfway in this seven-furlong contest. Making eyecatching headway under a motionless Martin Harley to ease ahead at the quarter-mile marker, he was given a shake of the reins when threatened approaching the final furlong and kept on powerfully up the hill to easily outpoint Leadman (GB) (Kingman {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths in impressive fashion.

“He's done nothing at home, he's worked gently on the bridle with another horse and wasn't wound up in any way for the race,” explained trainer John Gosden. “He was so sensible in the proceedings beforehand and in the race he did it all very professionally. He's not been on the grass for seven weeks, he's just been on the all-weather. Martin [Harley] gave him a lovely ride and I'm overjoyed. James Wigan bought the mare for Mr Strawbridge at the Rothschild dispersal and she was an exceptionally talented Group 1 winner that Roger [Charlton] trained. We'll go a step at a time and won't go jumping in the deep end. I think he'll be very comfortable over a mile, we'll go to a novice and then see where we go from there.”

Epictetus is the fifth foal and winner for G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Thistle Bird (GB) (Selkirk), herself a half-sister to dual Group 3-winning G1 Cantala S. second McCreery (GB) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) out of the dual stakes-winning G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest third Dolma (Fr) (Marchand de Sable). Thistle Bird was a 750,000gns purchase, carrying the winner, at Tattersalls' 2019 December Mares fixture and has also produced Listed Radley S. victrix and G3 Fred Darling S. runner-up Jumbly (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire). The May-foaled bay's stakes-placed third dam Young Manila (Manila) is kin to a trio of stakes performers headed by MGSW G2 Prix de Royallieu victrix Fabulous Hostess (Fabulous Dancer).
