A Triumphant Return For Bob Baffert

Just like riding a bicycle.

Starting his first horses since serving a 90-day suspension issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, trainer Bob Baffert won the two races in which he had entered horses on the Saturday card at Los Alamitos. Baffert's victories included a win by High Connection (Connect) in the Los Alamitos Derby. It was Baffert's sixth straight win in the race that used to be known as the Swaps S. and his 12th overall in the mile-and-an-eighth contest.

Baffert had last started horses on Apr. 2. Afterward, he began serving a suspension, the result of Medina Spirit (Protonico) testing positive for the medication betamethasone in the 2021 GI Kentucky Derby.

Baffert began his afternoon with a win by Rhetoric (Quality Road) in the day's fifth race, a maiden special weight event for 3-year-olds. The Baffert-trained first-time-starter Western Cape (Curlin) finished third behind his stablemate.

“There's nothing like being back and here I am at Los Alamitos,” Baffert said in an interview with TVG following the maiden win. “Everybody has been welcoming  me. There have been a lot of well-wishers, people glad to see me back. I'm glad to be back because I really missed it. While I was gone, Sean McCarthy, Jimmy Barnes, the whole team, they did a fantastic job. They kept it together. Here I am and I'm looking forward. I'm getting ready for Del Mar. This is where it all started for me, training quarter horses, so it's always been a special place for me. I'm just glad to be back.”

Despite Baffert's record in the Los Alamitos Derby, the betting public made Slow Down Andy (Nyquist) the favorite for trainer Doug O'Neill. But High Connection, ridden by Juan Hernandez, got past his rival in mid-stretch to prevail. He paid $5.40. Baffert also sent out Doppelganger (Into Mischief) in the race. He finished fourth.

Baffert will have one starter Sunday at Los Alamitos, Spooky Lady (Ghostzapper) in a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares.

Baffert remains ineligible for now to race at Churchill Downs, Churchill Downs-owned tracks and at the NYRA tracks. NYRA and Churchill suspended the trainer, a penalty separate from the Kentucky Racing Commission suspension.

Baffert returned to work on July 3, showing up at his barn at Santa Anita.

“It feels like the first day of school,” Baffert told the Los Angeles Times after his first day back.

Baffert said Barnes, his longtime assistant, was the first to greet him.

“He came over and gave me a big ole hug,” Baffert told the Times. “He said, 'Thank goodness, you're back.' I haven't talked to Jimmy since I left. Our whole barn is like a family, I've known them all for so long.”

Baffert told the Times that most of his owners stood by him during his suspension. He did lose at least one important horse as 2021 2-year-old champ 'TDN Rising Star' Corniche (Quality Road) was transferred to the Todd Pletcher barn.

“I lost some horses. Some owners are still waiting [to see what happens],” he told the Times. “I lost Corniche. That hurt. All in all, I've got great group of owners. They hung there in there with me, they know the truth and the facts.”

Baffert has fought all the charges and allegations thrown his way, but did admit to the Times that he made at least one mistake along the way.

“If I had to do anything different, I wouldn't have had a press conference,” Baffert told the paper. “But it was out there and [the media] was waiting….I was trying to get ahead of it. I was convinced after talking to my veterinarians, that [the positive] was impossible. Then it dawned on them 48 hours later, be careful with the [ointment] Otomax.”

During his absence, most of his horses were trained by his former assistant Tim Yakteen and McCarthy. Racing for Yakteen, Taiba (Gun Runner) won the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby before finishing 12th in the GI Kentucky Derby. Taiba, along with stablemate Pinehurst (Twirling Candy), have been nominated to the GI TVG.com Haskell S. on July 23 at Monmouth Park. Baffert has won the Haskell nine times.

Baffert can also begin to focus on the upcoming Del Mar meet, where he normally unveils what is always a well-stocked arsenal of 2-year-old talent. Baffert had 20 winners at last year's summer meet at Del Mar, finishing second in the standings behind Peter Miller, who had 26 wins.

First Black-Type Winner for Freshman Sharp Azteca

Tyler's Tribe became the first black-type winner for his freshman sire (by Freud) with a daylight score in the Prairie Gold Juvenile S. Saturday at Prairie Meadows. Just like in his debut June 20 over this surface at a furlong shorter, the 2-year-old dark bay opened a clear lead early and stayed there. After capturing his unveiling by 16 3/4 lengths, he took Saturday's stakes event by 8 1/2 lengths. Tyler's Tribe broke from the rail Saturday, blazed to the front, set :22.07 and :45.16 fractions, and barreled home a sharp victor while never threatened.

Sharp Azteca, winner of the GI Cigar Mile H. in 2017, now has seven winners and one stakes winner in his nascent stallion career. He stands at Three Chimneys near Midway, Kentucky.

Tyler's Tribe topped the 2021 Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Fall Sale at $34,000. His dam produced a Good Samaritan colt last year that sold as a short yearling at Keeneland January for $15,000 to Kentucky River Racing. ‘I’m Glad To Be Back’: Baffert Wins Los Alamitos Derby With High Connection

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert made a triumphant return to Los Alamitos on Saturday, winning both of the races in which he had starters, including the $125,000 Los Alamitos Derby with High Connection.

Six days after his recent 90-day suspension for a medication violation ended, Baffert won a maiden contest with heavily favored Rhetoric two hours before High Connection disposed of even-money favorite Slow Down Andy and three other 3-year-olds in the Derby.

The win in the race was the fifth in a row for Baffert and his seventh since daytime Thoroughbred racing returned to Los Alamitos in 2014.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez, who also aboard Rhetoric, High Connection took it to Slow Down Andy, who had upset the Baffert-trained Messier in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) the last time he raced at Los Alamitos, and ultimately got the best of that one inside the final eighth of a mile, winning by 1 ¾ lengths.

Owned by Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud, the Connect colt out of the Forest Camp mare Forest Legend completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.98. Now 2-for-4, High Connection has banked $149,000. He returned $5.40.

Slow Down Andy, who was trying to become the first horse to complete a Los Alamitos Futurity and Los Alamitos Derby double, wound up four lengths clear of 19-1 shot – and stablemate – Win the Day.

Doppelganger, Baffert's other entrant and 3-1 third choice, and Got Thunder completed the order of finish.

“I'm glad to be back and what a way to comeback,'' said Baffert. “I love this place. The first time I came to Los Alamitos was when I was 14. Quarter horses were my life and I knew if I could make it at Los Alamitos I knew this was it.

“(High Connection) kind of fell back after he broke his maiden (by 10 lengths March 26) and we weren't really sure how far he wanted to go. The first two horses I worked when I came back where these two and they worked really well.

“Doppelganger works so well in the morning and I don't know why he doesn't show more in the afternoon. I could tell in the paddock High Connection was ready and Juan said he really brought his A game today. He needed it because Slow Down Andy was relentless.''

The victory completed a sweep of the Los Angeles County Fair meet stakes for Hernandez. He won the Bertrando June 25 with Desmond Doss and the Grade 2 Great Lady M. last Monday with Becca Taylor prior to Saturday.

“Bob told me to keep him close because he can get a little lazy,'' said Hernandez. “He was sharp in the post parade, came out running and very comfortable all the way.''

Klimt Filly Caps Big Day for McPeek in Iowa Oaks

Well-supported at 39-10, Butterbean (Klimt) completed a most productive Saturday for the Ken McPeek barn, accelerating sharply three furlongs out before cruising home to a handy success in Saturday's GIII Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows.

A convincing 5 3/4-length winner of the local Oaks prep in the June 11 Panthers S. over a mile, the chestnut was dragged back to last and dropped down onto the fence to caboose the field through an opening couple of furlongs in a solid :23.50. Content to bide her time in the rear, Butterbean had one beaten entering the turn, but made eyecatching progress inside at the three-eighths pole. Tipped out under a full head of steam by Glenn Corbett, Butterbean raced up to odds-on Falconet (Uncle Mo) with a bit more than a furlong to travel and scampered clear to score impressively. Free Like a Girl (El Deal) made the running inside of Falconet and held gamely for third.

McPeek was also represented by GI Belmont Derby upsetter Classic Causeway (Giant's Causeway) and Runaway Wife (Gun Runner) and Silverleaf (Speightster), second and third, respectively, in the GIII Indiana Oaks.

Runner-up in auction-price-restricted maiden allowances at Churchill in October and November last year, Butterbean completed the exacta in an 'open' Gulfstream maiden Jan. 22, but was only sixth in a similar test at Keeneland Apr. 10. A neck second when in search of a confidence boost against $75,000 maiden claimers beneath the Twin Spires May 4, the $22,000 Keeneland September bargain graduated 23 days later and made it two straight when last seen in the Panthers.

Pedigree Notes:

The first graded winner for the expatriated Klimt, Butterbean is out of an unplaced half-sister to GSW Conquest Daddyo (Scat Daddy) and SW Hangingbyathread (Giant's Causeway). Her 2-year-old half-brother Fast Forward (Bolt d'Oro) is unplaced in a single start in Churchill maiden special weight company this past May and Letting Go produced a full-sister to Butterbean last season.
