Adaay’s Harry Three Impressive At Deauville

Clive Cox, one of the best in the game in Britain, has made his name by conjuring top sprinters almost out of thin air and another has emerged from the stable's seemingly inexhaustible reserves in Harry Three (GB) (Adaay {Ire}). Making substantial leaps with each outing now, the bay went from a smooth win in a Newmarket handicap May 14 to another success in a much more competitive version at York June 11 which contained the week's July Festival scorer Lethal Levi (GB) (Lethal Force {Ire}) and the subsequent G3 Chipchase S. runner-up Annaf (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}). Held up towards the rear early in Sunday's Listed Prix Kistena by Ryan Moore, who was taking Deauville by storm, the 6-5 favourite unleashed sectionals of 10.99, 10.90 and 10.87 between the four and the one and finished off with a barnstorming 11.41 to mark himself well above this standard. At the line, there was a 3 1/2-length margin to spare over the group 3-placed Haziym (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in a performance that compared favourably with the preceding G3 Prix De Ris-Orangis. “He's learned his trade in handicaps and has made the grade to listed class now very nicely,” Cox said. “I think also that he can improve more and won in the style of a group horse.”

The dam Harryana To (GB) (Compton Place {GB}), who also produced the stable's useful Diligent Harry (GB) (Due Diligence), has that G3 Hackwood S. runner-up and G3 Chipchase S. third's unraced 2-year-old full-brother Due Date (GB) who was snapped up by Cox for £55,000 at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale and their foal full-sister. The second dam Harryana (GB) (Efisio {GB}) threw the G2 Mill Reef S. winner Temple Meads (GB) (Avonbridge {GB}) and is the second dam of the recent G2 Sandy Lane S. winner El Caballo (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) and this stable's smart juvenile prospect Katey Kontent (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}).

Underrated Iowa-Bred Ain’t Life Grand Proves Mettle In Iowa Derby

RPM Thoroughbreds' Iowa homebred Ain't Life Grand overhauled 1-2 favorite Conagher in the stretch and shook free late for a 1 ½-length triumph in the $250,000 Iowa Derby Saturday at Prairie Meadows.

With jockey Elvin Gonzalez riding for trainer Kelly Von Hemel, Ain't Life Grand settled seventh, then sixth, of eight runners early in the 1 1/16-mile contest as Rome laid down fractions of :22.71 and :46.14 for a half-mile, with Conagher chasing from second in his stakes debut.

Ain't Life Grand improved his position down the backstretch and on the turn while Conagher disposed of Rome then looked to be an easy winner as he raced clear and opened a four-length lead in early stretch.

Eager to run when given the cue, Ain't Life Grand angled four-wide into the stretch and steadily reeled in Conagher with every stride, catching him late to get the win.

At 11-1 odds, Ain't Life Grand finished the distance in 1:42.65 on a fast track, earning his first win from three starts year and fourth overall from seven career starts. He returned $25.20.

Conagher, the favorite off an impressive allowance win June 3 at Churchill Downs, stayed on for second with Joe Rocco Jr. aboard, finishing 1 ¼ in front of third-place finisher Chileno under Stewart Elliott.

A son of Taylor Made Farm resident sire Not This Time, Ain't Life Grand was a talented 2-year-old last year, winning his maiden debut at Prairie Meadows as well as the Richard Radke Memorial Stakes and Iowa Cradle Stakes, earning his first black type, in back-to-back outings at the Altoona, Iowa track. He came into the Iowa Derby after finishing third in the Prairie Mile Stakes June 11 and was ready to win Saturday.

The $199,400 winner's share of the Iowa Derby purse boosted his lifetime earnings to $342,343.

Ain't Life Grand was produced by the unraced Medgalia d'Oro mare Cat d'Oro. Second dam Cat Moves, by Tale of the Cat, won the 2009 Prioress Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.

Kingman’s Habana Impresses For TDN Rising Star Tag In Germany

Led out unsold at 140,000gns when attending last year's Tattersalls October Book 1 fixture, Gestut Fahrhof's hitherto untried homebred 2-year-old filly Habana (Ger) (Kingman {GB}–Hargeisa {GSW-Ity, MGSP-Fr & GSP-Ger}, by Speightstown) instead illuminated Cologne's Weidenpescher venue with a scintillating performance over 6 1/2 furlongs in Sunday's HSBS Catering Maiden Preis. Her year-older half-brother Huancayo (Ger) (Frankel {GB}) had provided a telling clue with a three-length debut triumph at Hannover just two days before. Habana was the lone filly in a field of five and was under a firm hold behind all four rivals through the early strides before tanking forward at halfway. Powering to the fore hard on the steel with 350 metres remaining, the well-backed 13-10 favourite settled the contest in an instant when quickening clear passing the furlong marker and accelerated again before gearing down to easily outclass Muhalif (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) by an impressive 4 3/4 lengths.

“I actually wanted to wait a bit longer before committing and, if anything, we were in front a bit too soon, but she did that very well indeed,” said winning jockey Eddy Pedroza. Habana holds an eyecatching entry in Baden-Baden's G3 Zukunftsrennen, over seven furlongs at the end of August, and connections will take time to ponder options according to Gestut Fahrhof's Simon Stokes, who added, “We already have a high opinion of her and we're now going to discuss plans on how to proceed in a considered manner.”

Habana is the second of three foals produced by G3 Premio Primi Passi victrix Hargeisa (Speightstown), herself the leading representative of Listed Omnibus S. winner Hasay (GB) (Lomitas {GB}). Hasay, in turn, is the leading performer out of Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage victrix and GIII Matchmaker S. runner-up Saralea (Fr) (Sillery), herself a half-sister to the stakes-winning trio Deauville (Fr) (Groom Dancer), La Kaldoun (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}) and Solidoun (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}). Saralea is also kin to the dam of G3 Prix de la Jonchere-winning sire Kaldou Star (GB) (Kaldoun {Fr}) (Caro {Ire}). Hargeisa has a weanling filly by Pinatubo (Ire) to come.

Caravaggio’s Tenebrism Storms To Jean Prat Glory

Delivering the potent acceleration that had seen her claim joint-champion status among the juvenile fillies in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket in September, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism (Caravaggio) was firmly in command under optimum conditions in Deauville's seven-furlong G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat on Sunday. Able to draft in mid-pack early, Ballydoyle's 13-2 shot who sports the Westerberg silks was unleashed between Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Rozgar (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and after gaining the lead 100 metres from the line stayed on strongly to record a 1 1/4-length verdict over Light Infantry (GB) (Fast Company {Ire}). There was a blanket for the minors, with Light Infantry a short neck in front of Lusail, who was in turn a nose ahead of Accakaba (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with a nose also separating that rival and Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and a short head between that Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero and Rozgar. “The pace was a little slow and we had to wait–it was tight for room and they were all on top of each other, but she's got that great turn of foot and is a fast filly,” Ryan Moore said of the winner, who had been eighth in the 1000 Guineas and fourth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot last time June 17.

Tenebrism, whose immediate entry is in Goodwood's star-studded G1 Qatar Sussex S. July 27, was providing another landmark for Aidan O'Brien, who had yet to win the Jean Prat. “She's always shown plenty–she won the Cheveley Park on her second start and the ground was very fast for the Guineas and she got banged around and never got into any rhythm,” Moore, who had returned from action at Belmont hours earlier, added. “She was still a bit green at Ascot and struggled around the bend, but finished well and ran a good race but it was nice to come to a level track on nice ground today. She accelerated through the gap like a motorbike–Caravaggio was fast and she's out of Immortal Verse, who is well known here. She was very comfortable over seven today.”

Light Infantry, who had like Lusail been an eye-catcher when ninth in the 2000 Guineas having missed the break, is set for a return visit to Deauville for next month's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. “We thought the seven furlongs on fast ground would be against him and I'd like to think he has a bright future and will definitely be better at a mile,” trainer David Simcock said. “He ran better than his finishing position suggested at Newmarket and hopefully he'll come back here in August for the Jacques Le Marois. He is a very straightforward, very talented horse who handles any ground.”

Lusail was putting up another solid effort at the top level and trainer Richard Hannon said, “The mixed tempo of the race maybe cost us the win and other than that, there is nothing more to say. He is very consistent and will almost certainly win us another big one soon. He will most likely head to Goodwood for the [G2] Lennox Stakes or the Sussex.” Christophe Ferland said of Accakaba, “I am torn somewhere between satisfied and disappointed not to have won. I love this filly. She has an exceptional turn of foot and this was a proper race, with the best horses at seven furlongs and a mile–she'll now head to the [G1] Prix Maurice De Gheest.”

Charlie Appleby was pleased with the effort of Modern Games, who was found out by the drop from a mile. “We've got caught for a turn of foot, dropping back to seven and in the end, we know the mile is his best trip,” he said. “Trying to find a mile race for him at this time of the year is difficult, but there is the Sussex or the Jacques Le Marois and if he goes to the former he'll run alongside Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and if he goes for the Marois it will be with Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {Ire}). As
always, he ran a very solid race.”

Pedigree Notes:

Tenebrism, whose much-larger 2-year-old half-sister Statuette (Justify) is making waves having won the G2 Airlie Stud S., currently rates as her sire's best performer from his first crop. The aforementioned Immortal Verse, who captured the G1 Coronation S. and this venue's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, is out of the Listed Prix La Camargo winner and G3 Prix Fille de l'Air runner-up Side of Paradise (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and is a full-sister to Go Lovely Rose (Ire) who is responsible for four black-type performers including the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. runner-up Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}).

Side of Paradise is a daughter of Mill Princess (Ire) (Mill Reef), renowned for producing the Breeders' Cup Mile hero and champion sire Last Tycoon (Ire), as well as the G3 Goldene Peitsche-winning fellow sire Astronef (Ire) and the G3 Prix du Bois scorer and stakes producer The Perfect Life (Ire) (Try My Best). Another of Mill Princess's daughters, Save Me The Waltz (Ire) (Kings Lake), is in turn the dam of the GI Matron S. heroine Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be My Guest), while the moderate performer Zelda (Ire) (Caerleon) proved one of the family's best in her second career. Under her are the top sprinter Zipping (Ire) (Zafonic) and the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene winner Beauty Is Truth (Ire) by Immortal Verse's sire Pivotal (GB). Her trio of group 1 winners by Galileo (Ire) are Hermosa (Ire), Hydrangea (Ire) and The United States (Ire).
