Appleby Keeping Nations Pride, With The Moonlight In New York For Second Legs Of Turf Triple Series

Godolphin homebreds Nations Pride and With The Moonlight both finished second in their North American debuts in the first legs of the Caesars Turf Triple series on July 9 at Belmont Park. The talented sophomores have since shipped upstate to target the Grade 1, $1 million Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational on August 6 and the Grade 3, $700,000 Saratoga Oaks on August 7, respectively, at Saratoga Race Course.

The Charlie Appleby-trainees arrived in Saratoga on Tuesday to the care of Appleby's traveling assistant Chris Connett.

“They had a hack around the main track this morning, and they seem to have come out of their races really well,” Connett said. “We're happy with them. They'll be targeting the Saratoga Derby and the Oaks.”

Both the Saratoga Oaks and Saratoga Derby are contested at 1 3/16-miles.

Nations Pride and With The Moonlight, both piloted by Frankie Dettori, had markedly different trips in their respective first outings in North America, traveling 10 furlongs over the Belmont inner turf.

Nations Pride, a colt by Teofilo, was away slowly from post 10 in the Grade 1, $1 million Casears Belmont Derby Invitational, closing from ninth to finish just three-quarters of a length back of the pacesetting winner Classic Causeway.

With The Moonlight, a filly by Frankel, enjoyed a prominent trip from post 4 in the Grade 1, $700,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational, opening up a half-length lead at the stretch call only to be collared late by McKulick, who won by 1 3/4-lengths.

“Unfortunately, Nations Pride missed the break a little bit and had some trouble in running as well, but he ran a massive race,” Connett said. “The filly got on the front end and went fairly strong fractions early doors. She ran really hard to stick it out and unfortunately just got caught late on. She's a really nice filly.”

Nations Pride entered his North American debut from an eighth in the 12-furlong Group 1 Epsom Derby on June 4, five weeks after a seven-length romp over subsequent Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal in the Newmarket Stakes. The homebred had a four-race win streak snapped at Epsom, with his three previous wins all coming on flat courses, including a 3 1/4-length score in the 10-furlong Jumeirah Derby at Meydan in Dubai.

With The Moonlight, who won the Pretty Polly in May at Newmarket, entered her Belmont start from an off-the-board effort in the Group 1 Oaks at Epsom on June 3. She is a full-sister to Group 1 winner Dream Castle.

The Caesars Turf Triple series concludes at the Belmont fall meet with the Grade 3, $1 million Caesars Jockey Club Derby Invitational at 12 furlongs and the 11-furlong Grade 3, $700,000 Jockey Club Oaks.

Connett will saddle Godolphin homebred Creative Flair in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Diana and could return later this summer to prepare Yibir, the reigning Champion Turf Male, for a start in the 12-furlong Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer on August 27. The Sword Dancer offers a “Win and You're In” berth to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf in November at Keeneland.

Yibir won the Jockey Club Derby Invitational in September at Belmont ahead of capturing the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf in November at Del Mar. He returned to Belmont in May to finish third in the Grade 1 Man o' War ahead of a score in the Group 1 Princess of Wales's on July 7 at Newmarket.

NYRA Celebrates New Backstretch Healthcare Clinic At Saratoga

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today joined philanthropist John Hendrickson and representatives from the Backstretch Employee Service Team (BEST), Saratoga Hospital and the New York Thoroughbred Horseman's Association (NYTHA) to celebrate a new backstretch healthcare clinic to be constructed at historic Saratoga Race Course.

As a tribute to his late wife, Marylou Whitney, Hendrickson is funding construction of the new clinic, which is expected to open in the spring of 2023 and will replace a doublewide trailer that has housed on-site healthcare services at Saratoga Race Course. The new clinic, which will be operated by Saratoga Hospital in partnership with BEST, will provide a dramatically improved experience for those receiving primary and emergency healthcare services at Saratoga Race Course, which will be provided by doctors and medical professionals from Saratoga Hospital.

“Marylou always thought that Saratoga should be 'the summer place to be' for everyone, especially the backstretch workers,” said Hendrickson. “To that end, the new dorms built by NYRA along with the critical services provided by BEST and the Racetrack Chaplaincy have all helped Saratoga Race Course achieve the reputation of taking care of the backstretch community better than any other track in America. Today is the beginning of healthcare services on the Saratoga backstretch being elevated to the best in the country.”

Hendrickson has pledged $1.2 million for construction of the clinic, which will include a large waiting area, four examination rooms, a lab for blood work and office space. Roughly $400,000 of the total donation was raised in a 2020 auction of possessions belonging to Mrs. Whitney to support the effort.

“New York sets the standard when it comes to providing comprehensive social services and access to healthcare for the men and women working every day to make racing possible,” said NYRA President and CEO Dave O'Rourke. “Due to the hard work of BEST, and the generous support of John Hendrickson, this new facility will carry on the legacy of Marylou Whitney by ensuring the health and well-being of the backstretch community.”

The construction of the new clinic continues Mrs. Whitney and Mr. Hendrickson's long-running commitment to the backstretch community. Since Mrs. Whitney's death in 2019, Mr. Hendrickson has continued to lend his support to a variety of initiatives including backstretch appreciation dinners, E.S.L. classes and bingo nights.

For more than 30 years, BEST has worked to meet the health and social welfare needs of backstretch workers at Saratoga Race Course, Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack. The new clinic will further those efforts by providing on-site counseling and primary healthcare services, access to health insurance, and case management assistance.

“This facility is truly an example of how dreams can become a reality,” said BEST Executive Director Paul Ruchames. “The dream for this facility began in the mind of the late, great Marylou Whitney and was nurtured by many and brought to fruition caringly by John Hendrickson. It will be an amazing example of the power of private and public partnerships and will ensure backstretch-worker care for years and decades to come, as well as further the reputation of Saratoga Race Course as a model for backstretch-worker care in the United States.”

Dr. Alexander Cardiel, the Medical Director of the Backstretch Clinic for 14 years and a family practice physician at Saratoga Hospital, said the new facility will provide space to incorporate more services for the backstretch community, such as specialty clinics in dermatology, endocrinology and perhaps cardiology and orthopedics.

Dr. Cardiel added that the new clinic could also include services in behavioral health services and addiction medicine, as well as novel technologies that would allow retinal scans for diabetic patients.

“For many of our patients who seek care in the clinic, this is their only opportunity to receive primary care, and for some, it's the first time they've seen a physician in this country,” said Dr. Cardiel. “Running a clinic is not an easy venture. It has many moving parts, and we're fortunate to have access to a collective of organizations that have helped make this a reality.”

Highlighted by the 153rd renewal of the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers on August 27 and the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 6, the 2022 summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course will open on Thursday, July 14, and continue through Monday, September 5.

Following the four-day opening weekend, racing will be conducted five days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays, apart from the final week, when the meet will conclude on Labor Day.

Saratoga Live will present daily coverage and analysis of the summer meet at on the networks of FOX Sports. For the complete broadcast schedule, visit NYRA.com/SaratogaLive.

Onesto Primed For The Grand Prix

He may be diminutive compared to the likes of Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) or Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), but 'TDN Rising Star' Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) could be about to enter the arena of giants if he can master his five rivals in Thursday's G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Given no chance by the draw before he even exited the stalls for the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club, the Fabrice Chappet-trained chestnut, who races in the silks of Jean-Etienne Dubois, will have no excuses this time with fast ground also in his favour. Able to register a rapid final three furlongs when coming of age in the 10 1/2-furlong G2 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud on May 8, he also recorded the fastest sectional of the entire field in the June 5 Chantilly Classic only to earn an inauspicious fifth placing coming from so far back. His final three-furlong time of :35.49 between three out and two out on that occasion was the quickest of the line-up on ground that was softer than he prefers, so ParisLongchamp could be in for something special on Thursday evening.

French Duo Command Respect

Perhaps the biggest danger to Onesto are the other two home-trained colts, Al Asayl France's L'Astronome (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Haras De La Perelle and Stephane Wattel's Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). L'Astronome has vital course form, having won the Prix de Ferrieres conditions race on Apr. 28 and G2 Prix Hocquart May 26, and is certain to appreciate this 12-furlong trip. He is another who is capable of fast closing sectionals and will be a dangerous rival if left alone on the lead. That also applies to the supplemented Simca Mille, who dominated the G3 Prix du Lys over this trip at Chantilly on June 19. Flaxman Stables' G1 Irish Derby runner-up Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}) is a significant player if this is not too soon after his big effort chasing Westover at The Curragh on June 25, while KHK Racing's June 15 G2 Queen's Vase winner and 'Rising Star' Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the Nas Syndicate and the O'Callaghans' Prix du Jockey-Club runner-up El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) may find this on the sharp side.

Malleret Match

Alongside the Grand Prix de Paris, the track also stages the 14-furlong G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil and G2 Prix de Malleret where 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) is another high-profile opportunity for a Frankel (GB) and the 12-furlong test should not be beyond Juddmonte's homebred based on her success in the Listed Prix Melisande over a mile and a quarter here on June 12. Whether she is good enough to handle The Aga Khan's June 5 G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Baiykara (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) is another matter. Another progressive filly on display on Thursday is Moyglare Stud's Trevaunance (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), who takes aim at Leopardstown's G3 Green Room Meld S. over nine furlongs having won a decent conditions event at a mile at Limerick June 17.
