Half To Zaaki Debuts At Newmarket

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features a half-brother to Group 1 winner Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}).

1.42 Newmarket, Mdn, £8,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
ZAAKARA (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) represents a rare link-up between Kirsten Rausing and Sir Michael Stoute, but the Freemason Lodge handler was at one time responsible for this debutante's half-brother Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) before he went to Australia to win three Group 1s. Zaaki took until his 3-year-old campaign to get off the mark, and with seven of her nine rivals having the benefit of racecourse experience here a bold show from the homebred will be significant.

6.15 Doncaster, Novice, £9,950, 2yo, f, 6f 2yT
HEY LYLA (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) debuts for her breeder Mascalls Stud and the Charlie and Mark Johnston stable and is a half-sister to Urban Fox (GB) (Foxwedge {Aus}), who won on her debut over this trip before scaling the heights when taking the G1 Pretty Polly S.

Taiba Haskell Bound

'TDN Rising Star' Taiba (Gun Runner) will contest next Saturday's GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational S., trainer Bob Baffert confirmed to Monmouth Park officials Friday. The $1.7-million FTFMAR purchase by Zedan Racing Stables took the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby in just his second start, but was last seen finishing 12th in the GI Kentucky Derby May 7. Those last two starts came for trainer Tim Yakteen, who took over training of the colt during Baffert's recent suspension.

“I hadn't seen him in a long time. I'm happy with the way he looks,” said Baffert, who owns a record nine Haskell trophies.

Taiba breezed five panels Friday at Santa Anita in :59.40 (2/55).

“I worked Taiba today and he worked really well,” Baffert said. “He came out of it well. He's happy. I'm happy with him.”

Baffert sent out Taiba to a 7 1/2-length debut drubbing Mar. 5.

“He's a special horse. He was asked to do a tall task in the Derby. The Derby was crazy. It was a stampede,” Baffert said. “He showed what he could do in the Santa Anita Derby off just one race…This is the time of year when the 3-year-olds start to shine. I think he's up for the Haskell and he's coming to the Haskell.”

New Bolton Center Announces Retirement Of Richardson, Sweeney, And Several Colleagues

The University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center announced the retirement this week of Drs. Dean Richardson, David Galligan, Virginia Reef, Corinne Sweeney, and Raymond Sweeney.

Richardson is well known in racing circles for his attempts to save fan favorite Barbaro, who fell victim to laminitis following a severe injury to his right hind leg in the 2006 Preakness. Richardson, who has served as Chief of Large Animal Surgery at New Bolton, has developed the use of locking compression plates in equine surgery, advanced imaging technology to improve surgical outcomes, and refined procedures to reduce infection after surgery. Besides his considerable respect in surgical practice, he has garnered numerous awards and is well known as a mentor to veterinary students at the school.

Earlier this year, Richardson was injured seriously in a riding accident necessitating surgery.

Sweeney is an internal medicine specialist who also served as associate dean for New Bolton Center. She has published peer-reviewed research on a wide range of medical topics from infectious disease to EIPH and has served as chair of the Association for Racing Commissioners International.
