Churchill’s Ladies Church Snags G2 Sapphire S. On The Line

Mark Dobbin's 3-year-old filly Ladies Church (GB) (Churchill {Ire}–Rioticism {Fr}, by Rio De La Plata) saluted in last term's Listed Marwell S. and hit the board in three subsequent black-type starts. She went postward for Saturday's five-furlong G3 Barberstown Castle Sapphire S. at the Curragh as a 12-1 chance coming back off a close-up 10th in Royal Ascot's June 17 Palace of Holyroodhouse H. and secured a last-gasp win for a career high. Comfortable in mid division through halfway, the eventual winner had eased into contention when shaken up approaching the final furlong and was driven out late to supplant last year's winner Mooneista (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) by a sliver on the line in a thriller.

“Ben [Coen] is a top-class rider and gave her a peach of a ride,” beamed trainer Johnny Murtagh. “We fancied her strongly in Ascot, but she probably could have done with one more run before that. We knew coming here today that she's a filly that shows plenty of pace. We had a hood on her before because she's keen, but the pace of the race was always going to help her settle today and Ben delivered her to perfection. When she relaxes she's got that turn of foot at the end. She's a huge filly and what she did at two is probably a bonus. She won her maiden and a Listed race and was always going to be better at three. She's learning how to sprint and we're going to be brave with her now for the rest of the season. She's won a Group 2, so it's Group 1s all the way now.”

Galileo’s Magical Lagoon Resilient In Irish Oaks Triumph

Yuesheng Zhang's Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Night Lagoon {Ger}, by Lagunas {GB}) displayed a willing attitude when annexing last month's G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot and her determination was to the fore again as she refused to yield and battled gamely to a career high in Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh. Last term's G3 Flame of Tara S. victrix went off as the 5-4 favourite, in the absence of Epsom's G1 Oaks exacta Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), and raced under a firm hold behind the clear leader, Show Of Stars (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), in second. Inching ever closer from halfway, she cruised to the front on the bridle approaching the final quarter mile and called upon deep reserves under a drive in the closing stages to bravely repel the persistent threat of Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by a hard-fought half length, with Cairde Go Deo (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) 2 3/4 lengths further adrift in third.

Magical Lagoon, fourth on debut at Naas in August, had earlier backed up her Flame of Tara victory with a close-up seventh in Newmarket's Oct. 8 G1 Fillies' Mile in her juvenile season closer and opened this campaign with a short-head second contesting Navan's Apr. 23 Listed Salsabil S. in her penultimate start.

“It's wonderful to win one classic, to get two is absolutely amazing,” commented Jessica Harrington after adding to her 2018 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas success with Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). “She's such a game filly, who only does as much as she has to do and she's just a lovely filly to train for Mr Zhang. I kept looking at what was behind her, but I knew she'd keep staying. She stayed very well in Ascot, but they probably didn't go as quick as they did in Ascot. She just ran a great race, Shane [Foley] was in the right position and kept going forward. He rode a super race and she kept finding and finding. It's only her third run this year and I'd say she'll improve again. She's in the [G1] Yorkshire Oaks and after that I haven't really made a decision. It's been mooted and I'd love to keep her in training next year. I hope so because Galileos improve and her brother [Novellist] was a much better 4-year-old than 3-year-old. Before [Emily Upjohn's enforced withdrawal] we were the underdogs and I love being the underdog and having a go at them, but it's worked out great.”

Mehmas’s Minzaal Strikes In The Hackwood

Winless since the 2020 G2 Gimcrack S., Shadwell's Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) put it all together to return to the first spot in a competitive renewal of Newbury's G3 bet365 Hackwood S. on Saturday. Keen early for Jim Crowley tracking the leaders, the 4-1 co-favourite who was only 13th in Royal Ascot's G1 Platinum Jubilee S. last time June 18 stayed on strongly to gain the advantage inside the last 100 yards. Despite the attention of the 3-year-olds Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) and Dubawi Legend (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the Owen Burrows-trained 4-year-old was too strong to beat them by 1 1/4 lengths and a head respectively. “I really thought he was going to win at Royal Ascot, so I was disappointed–he travelled a bit too well that day,” Crowley explained. “He coped with the ground here, but his action and his best form would suggest he is better with a bit of cut.”

 

Absent for a year after his juvenile-campaign closer when third in Newmarket's G1 Middle Park S., Minzaal had been straight back on track when second in Ascot's Listed Rous S. before running third in that track's G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. Third on his seasonal bow in the May 11 G2 1895 Duke Of York S., the bay had gone off piste for the first time in the Platinum Jubilee but was still only just over four lengths in arrears. For Burrows, that performance may have been down to the application of headgear. “We tried something at Ascot, putting the cheekpieces on him, as he is so laid-back and it didn't work,” he explained. “Jim just felt he travelled a bit too well off a strong pace and he was bang there a furlong and a half down, but within that last furlong he was a spent force. We went back to what we know and we are thrilled to get him back. Quite often there is a little bit of juice in the ground at Haydock, so the Sprint Cup is on the cards.”

Minzaal's unraced dam Pardoven (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}), whose 2-year-old Maxi King (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}) was a 280,000gns purchase by A C Elliott at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale and whose yearling daughter of Footstepsinthesand (GB) was bought by Grande Ville Breeding for 80,000gns at the latest edition of that auction, is kin to four black-type performers headed by the G3 Gordon S. runner-up Firebet (Ire) (Dubai Destination). Their dam, the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial-placed Dancing Prize (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), is a full-sister to the G1 Fillies' Mile runner-up Dance To The Top (GB) whose progeny list is headed by the G2 Al Fahidi Fort winner and G1 Dubai Duty Free runner-up Bankable (Ire) (Medicean {GB}) and the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy scorer Cheshire (GB) (Warning {GB}).
