Doctor Oscar led at every call in the $60,000 Victor S. Myers Stakes on Saturday at Canterbury Park and held off a late charge by favorite Love the Nest to win by one length in the stakes record time of 1:08.60 for six furlongs.
The Victor S. Myers was one of four stakes for Minnesota-breds carded Saturday at the Shakopee, Minnesota racetrack.
Chad Lindsay rode Doctor Oscar for Pete Mattson, a Prior Lake, Minnesota, resident who owns and bred the 3-year-old son of Shackleford out of Miss Darla, by Montbrook.
Doctor Oscar, trained by David Van Winkle, is unbeaten in three starts this year and has won four of six lifetime starts while earning $116,238. He returned paid $5.20.
“He was just a big, healthy horse,” Mattson said. “His mother raced for me and made over $100,000 at Gulfstream Park. We knew he was well bred.”
Brewhouse, ridden by Nik Goodwin, won the $60,000 Frances Genter Stakes racing wire to wire. The betting favorite was not challenged until deep stretch when She's My Warrior, who had chased in second throughout, made a final move but came up a neck short.
The 3-year-old Tapiture filly, owned by Vicki McGowan and John Mentz, was timed in 1:10. 41 for six furlongs on a fast track and is now perfect in two career starts. She paid $6.00.
Brewhouse, who was produced by the Limehouse mare Birdhouse, is trained by Mac Robertson.
The $50,000 Ralph Strangis Stakes went to Zoe's Delight by disqualification as a result of front-running Thealligatorhunter interfering with eventual third-place finisher Hot Shot Kid inside the eighth pole.
Zoe's Delight, ridden by Luis Valenzuela, finished second but was moved to first as a result of the stewards' decision to move Thealligatorhunter, piloted by Alonso Quinonez, from first to third behind Hot Shot Kid.
Time for 7 ½ furlongs was 1:28.78 on firm turf.
Zoe's Delight, a 6-year-old gelding by Itsmyluckyday out of Delightful Ridge, by Come Summer, is owned and was bred by Winchester Place Thoroughbreds LLC and is trained by Tony Rengstorf. The winner paid $12.60.
Midnight Current and jockey Harry Hernandez won the $50,000 Minnesota Turf Distaff for owner Lothenbach Stables. The 4-year-old Midnight Lute filly out of Sharp Current, by Tiznow, won by four lengths as the 6-5 favorite in the 7 ½ furlong turf race, completed in 1:28.
Conditioned by leading trainer Joel Berndt, she returned $4.40.
Total handle for the 10-race Hall of Fame Night program was $3,299,658, the fourth largest wagering total in track history.
