Diana Winner In Italian Earns Triple-Digit Beyer Speed Figure, Brown Mulls Next Starts For Superfecta Finishers

Trainer Chad Brown's domination of the Diana (G1) continued on Saturday when Peter Brant's In Italian set a course record for nine furlongs over the Mellon turf course at Saratoga Race Course.

The four-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner added a seventh Diana score to his ledger, including six of the last seven editions. Three of his previous Diana victresses have gone on to secure honors for champion turf female, including Sistercharlie [2018], who also won the 2019 Diana, Lady Eli [2017], and Rushing Fall [2020]. Zagora, who gave Brown his first Grade 1 triumph in the 2011 Diana, was named champion turf female the following year.

Saturday's Diana saw a Brown superfecta as In Italian set torrid fractions up front and maintained her advantage into the stretch, fending off a late challenge by graded stakes-winning stablemate Technical Analysis to win by 1 1/4-lengths in a course record 1:45.06. Stablemates Bleecker Street and Rougir finished third and fourth, respectively.

In Italian garnered  a 100 Beyer Speed Figure for her record-setting performance.

“I'm very fortunate to have those four horses able to participate,” Brown said. “Obviously it was a very short field, but I can't control that. It's just another memorable accomplishment for our team and a wonderful day at the races for a lot of friends and family. It's certainly a day and a feat I'll always remember.”

Entering the Diana off a third in the Longines Just a Game (G1), In Italian was the longest shot of the Brown foursome at odds of 8-1, which included Grade 1 winners Bleecker Street and Rougir as well as Technical Analysis. But the 4-year-old British-bred Dubawi chestnut rose to the occasion when it mattered most, building on a consistent resume which also includes a triumph in the Honey Fox (G3) in March at Gulfstream Park.

“I wouldn't have run her if I didn't think she had a chance to win,” Brown said. “I thought all four horses were really lined up and ready to run from whatever their individual styles were. Each horse had a plan and each horse a really fair shot to get their trip and do it. All of them got good trips. In Italian just found a way to rebreak at the top of the lane and kick on, which would've made it hard for any horse to catch her yesterday.”

While In Italian flew in slightly under the radar, Klaravich Stables' Technical Analysis arrived off a hand-ridden triumph in the Gallorette (G3) at Pimlico while bragging two graded stakes wins at the Spa last summer in the Lake George (G3) and Lake Placid (G2). An unbeaten record in seven starts prior to the Diana made Brant's Bleecker Street the favorite, but the daughter of Quality Road had to make up ten lengths finishing third. Rougir, owned by Brant and Michael Tabor, just missed third by a neck to complete the superfecta.

Brown did not have any definite plans for their next starts, but said that In Italian could wait for the $600,000 First Lady (G1) on October 8 at Keeneland, where the Breeders' Cup will be held this year. He also indicated a possibility of a rematch between the top two Diana finishers in the $400,000 Ballston Spa (G2) on August 27 at Saratoga Race Course.

Brown said Rougir will “maybe” target the $500,000 Beverly D. (G1) on August 12 at Churchill Downs, while Bleecker Street will likely return to action sometime in the fall.

Bleecker Street, the lone American-bred filly in the field, captured the 10-furlong Grade 1 New York on June 10 ahead of the Diana, having won three other graded stakes events earlier this year.

“I think to a mile and an eighth to a mile and a quarter, anywhere in that range is fine,” Brown said regarding Bleecker Street. “What I don't want to do is run her three turns, I don't think that's her deal.”

For the past few years, Brown and his owners have gone to public auctions abroad in search of talented horses boasting strong turf pedigrees, including In Italian and Technical Analysis, both of whom were purchased at the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

“It's been a nice addition to cultivate our own horses from scratch, going and buying them and putting them in our system,” Brown said. “In recent years it became harder to buy horses that had already run a little bit, which we used to do more of earlier on in my career. With those horses being more challenging to purchase privately, we just started to have our own farm team of going and buying European-bred horses. You see the successful ones, and you get a batch of them and not every horse works out, but we've had tremendous success doing it and it's something we'll look to do more of for sure.”

After Sanford Win, Hopeful Likely Next for Mo Strike

Nasser Bin Omairah's Mo Strike (Uncle Mo), winner of Saturday's GIII Sanford S., will likely make his next start in the Sept. 5 GI Hopeful S., trainer Brad Cox confirmed Sunday.

“He's great and looks fantastic. I think the right thing to do, from a timing standpoint, is to look at the Hopeful and work our way back from there,” Cox said Sunday. “I think we'll skip the [Aug. 13 GII] Saratoga Special, because it's asking a lot of him and this gives him more time. We brought him back quick off of his maiden win, so he'll have all summer here. It's a great place to be, so there's no rush.”

Mo Strike was Cox's third winner of the three-day old Saratoga meeting. The trainer will look to add to his graded tally in the coming weeks with Caravel (Mizzen Mat) looking to repeat in July 23 GIII Caress S. and Arklow (Arch) making his 8-year-old debut off a nine-month layoff in the July 31 GII Bowling Green S.

Caravel and Arklow both breezed over the Oklahoma turf training track Sunday, the former working a half-mile in :49.60 (24/52) with jockey Tyler Gaffalione up and the latter drilling five furlongs in 1:01.72 (2/15).

Cox said he was particularly impressed with the way Caravel has trained since her win in the June 10 GIII Intercontinental S.

“She was amazing. She was amazing last week [:47.22 (1/29)] and this week she was too, but a little more steady–a maintenance move,” Cox said. “Tyler was on her; he's worked her several times in Kentucky and she looks like she's set up for a big race Saturday. I don't know if we need to see any improvement from her, just more of the same. She likes it up here and we're hoping she can duplicate her run from last year.”

Arklow has not raced since finishing fifth in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont last October.

“It's a tall task off the layoff, but he's shown the ability to run really well off layoffs,” Cox said. “Last year, his first race back was in the Louisville H. and he won that. I'm pretty happy with how he's doing.”

Brown Confirms Preakness Winner Early Voting For Jim Dandy

Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Early Voting will join stablemate Zandon in the starting gate for the $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) July 30 at Saratoga Race Course, while unbeaten Jack Christopher is to be the stable's lone representative in the $1 million Haskell (G1) Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Deciding to bypass the Haskell with Early Voting, trainer Chad Brown shipped the Gun Runner colt from Belmont Park to Saratoga early Sunday morning after he emerged from his Saturday morning breeze in good order.

“Early Voting is here and he'll be going in the Jim Dandy,” Brown said. “Jack Christopher looked great this morning and looked ready to go for the Haskell. At the end of the day, I was going to run two horses in one race and one in the other and I'd rather only run the one in the Haskell. I just didn't see the benefit of putting Early Voting in a larger field against a really fast horse and what it might do to him five weeks out from the Travers (G1, August 27 at Saratoga).”

Klaravich Stables' Early Voting won the Withers (G3) and finished second in the Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct before winning the Preakness May 21 at Pimlico Race Course. He worked four furlongs Saturday in :49.25.

Jack Christopher, winner of the Champagne (G1) and the Woody Stephens (G1) Belmont Park among four victories from as many lifetime starts, went in :49.80.

Blue Grass (G1) winner Zandon, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby (G1) May 7, worked on the main track at Saratoga for the first time Saturday morning, breezing four furlongs in :48.69.

$1-Million Pacific Classic Anchors Del Mar’s Lucrative Summer Stakes Schedule

Del Mar will offer an enhanced stakes schedule for its 31-day summer meet that features 34 major races with more than half of them boosted above their 2021 purse numbers resulting in a record gross value of $8,275,000.

The summer meet at California's seaside track starts Friday and runs through Sept. 11.

Besides the major stakes, there also will be increases from $80,000 to $100,000 for all five of its overnight stakes, according to information released by the track earlier this year.

Major stakes purse raises will be in effect ranging from $25,000 to $100,000, notably including amplifications to a pair of Grade 1 offerings – the six-furlong Bing Crosby Stakes on Saturday, July 30 climbing from $300,000 to $400,000 and the filly and mare showcase that is the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes on Saturday, Aug. 6 also rising from $300,000 to $400,000.

In 2021, the shore oval's stakes schedule carried a gross value of $7,450,000. This year's additional $825,000 in purse monies means an approximate 10% increase for black type runners, making it the most lucrative stakes schedule in the shore oval's history. All told 16 major stakes are worth more money for this go-round, along with the increases for the five overnights.

The track's premier event is the Grade 1, $1,000,000 TVG Pacific Classic, which will be run for the 32nd time on Saturday, Sept. 3. The mile and one quarter for 3-year-olds and up will be bolstered once again by four additional stakes surrounding it on a rich card that undoubtedly will be the highlight of the summer season.

Along with the Classic will be a trio of Grade 2 races, all carrying $300,000 purses: the Del Mar Handicap at 11 furlongs on turf; the Del Mar Mile at eight furlongs on turf, and the Caesars Sportsbook Del Mar Derby at nine furlongs on turf. The cherry on top of the afternoon will be the $125,000 Shared Belief Stakes at a mile on the main track.

Joining the three Grade 1 headliners already mentioned are three other Grade 1 presentations in the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks on Saturday, Aug. 20; the $300,000 TVG Del Mar Debutante on Saturday, Sept. 10, and the $300,000 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Additionally, the track will offer a stakes tripleheader on Saturday, Sept. 10 (TVG Del Mar Debutante, John C. Mabee Stakes, Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf) and nine other weekend dates where it has scheduled stakes doubleheaders.

Del Mar also will present its usual compliment of eight California-bred stakes, part of the Golden State Stakes Series that consists of 36 races at tracks up and down the state worth more than $4.4 million. Its stakes are the $175,000 Fleet Treat Stakes, the $175,000 Real Good Deal Stakes, the $150,000 California Dreamin' Stakes, the $125,000 CTBA Stakes, the $125,000 Graduation Stakes, the $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes, the $125,000 Generous Portion Stakes, and the $125,000 I'm Smokin Stakes.

Del Mar will open its season with a three-day weekend (Friday, July 22, 23 and 24), then have five four-day weeks (Thursday through Sunday), a five-day week (including Labor Day Monday, Sept. 5), then finish with a Friday-through-Sunday weekend (Sept. 9, 10, and 11).
