Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Jump Start, Uncle Lino Racked Up Stallion Awards In Early 2022
The race for leading sire by Pennsylvania stallion award earnings looked through the end of March like it often does at the end of the year, featuring the stalwart Jump Start with a comfortable lead.
However, the race percolating below the surface showcased a young stallion on the rise.
Uncle Lino, who joined Jump Start at Northview PA before moving to the operation's Maryland branch, is firmly in second place by 2022 incentive earnings, making his owner $39,341 through March 31.
A Grade 1-placed stakes-winning son of Uncle Mo, Uncle Lino's oldest runners are just four years old, but he has quickly amassed a solid resume with his runners in the Keystone State. Though he is still seeking his first stakes winner, he boasted seven stakes-placed runners at the time.
In Pennsylvania, stallion owners earn a 10 percent share of purse earnings earned by a runner bred and sired in the state when they finish in the top three at a Pennsylvania racetrack.
By that metric, Uncle Lino was most supported through the first three months of 2022 by Far Mo Power, a 4-year-old gelding who generated $3,528 in stallion awards.
Far Mo Power went two-for-two through the end of March, taking a pair of optional claiming races at Parx Racing.
His first start of the year on Jan. 26 was an eventful one, stumbling out of the gate, settling wide in the middle of the pack, and getting up at the wire to prevail by a head in a seven-furlong race. The gelding then followed up with a far easier trip on March 8, staying within striking distance of the leader and kicking free to win another seven-furlong sprint by 4 1/2 lengths.
Far Mo Power is owned by Joseph Sutton and trained by Louis Linder Jr. He was bred by Peter Giangiulio, out of the stakes-placed Power By Far mare J.D. Safari.
Burano, a 3-year-old filly, was a close second among Uncle Lino's stallion award earners, making the Northview operation $3,300 through the end of March.
The filly started the season with a bang, crushing a one-mile Parx maiden special weight field by 6 1/2 lengths in a near wire-to-wire effort on Jan. 3. She then finished second in a Jan. 19 allowance optional claiming race at Parx, going one mile and 70 yards.
Burano is trained by John Servis, and she runs as a homebred for S.M.D. Ltd. She is out of the winning Sir Cat mare Catsuit.

Racehorses Evacuated From La Teste de Buch
As parts of Europe continue to be subjected to record temperatures, the large forest fire raging in the Gironde region of south-west France has forced the evacuation of all 370 horses in training at La Teste de Buch racecourse. Though the fire is several kilometres from the track and training centre, the horses have been moved to racecourses in Bordeaux and Mont de Marsan, while others have been given refuge at Haras de Saubouas, largely to protect them from inhaling toxic fumes from the blaze which has destroyed campsites and woodland across more than 45,000 acres along the Atlantic coast.
Celine Bobacher, communications manager for La Teste de Buch racecourse, told Jour de Galop, “The fire advanced so quickly and is now close to the racecourse. The strong fumes became a concern. The surrounding neighbourhoods have also been evacuated.”
La Teste de Buch had been scheduled to host race meetings on July 24 and 25. The fixture on Sunday, July 24 will be moved to Dieppe, which had been set to race on Monday. That fixture will now move to Tarbes, while Dax will host La Teste's second meeting, which has been postponed until Tuesday, July 26.
The heatwave has also meant an adjustment to race times during Vichy's week-long festival have been moved to avoid racing during the hottest part of the day. In England, five race meetings were cancelled on Monday and Tuesday following the British government's issuing of an extreme heat warning.
Trainers and their teams in parts of Britain where the temperature has been approaching 40 Celsius over the last two days have been exercising horses as early as 3.30am in order to beat the heat.

Miles Ahead Voted Claiming Crown Horse of the Year
Miles Ahead (g, 5, Competitive Edge–Jennie R., by Awesome Again), winner of last term's GIII Smile Sprint Invitational S. and the Claiming Crown Rapid Transit, has been named the 2021 Claiming Crown Horse of the Year. The honor is voted on by the National HBPA's Industry Awards Committee, chaired by Todd Mostoller from the Pennsylvania HBPA.
Miles Ahead will be recognized at the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) annual awards dinner on Sept. 10. The Claiming Crown–designed to give the blue-collar workhorses their own championship day–is sponsored by the National Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association, TOBA and the host track.
Miles Ahead was purchased in 2019 for $175,000 at the OBS March 2-year-old in training sale by trainer Eddie Plesa, Jr. and the ownership partnership of David Melin, Leon Ellman and the trainer's wife, Laurie. After winning the Gulfstream Park Sprint S. in February, they accepted an offer to sell the gelding, who now races for Jay Em Ess Stable and is trained by Paul McGee. Miles Ahead most recently finished second by a neck to GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Aloha West in the Kelly's Landing S.
Eric Hamelback, NHBPA CEO, said Miles Ahead epitomizes what the Claiming Crown and the Claiming Crown Horse of the Year were created to recognize.
“The committee zeroed in on Miles Ahead and felt as if the horse and the connections were indeed the horse to be recognized for their accomplishments,” Hamelback said. “We are pleased that we can recognize and award a trophy to Miles Ahead at this year's TOBA awards ceremony.”
