Del Mar: Opening Day Oceanside Stakes Draws 14 Runners

Del Mar will open its gates Friday for the first of 31 racing days that will comprise its 2022 summer racing season, the 83rd time the horses have come to the scenic seaside place where the turf meets the surf. Topping the day's bill will be the 77th edition of the traditional Opening Day feature, the Oceanside Stakes at a mile on the grass for 3-year-olds, and the race has drawn a full complement of 14 runners.

The Oceanside will be the eighth of 10 races on the afternoon that will offer a first post of 2 p.m. The full card drew a husky 124 entries in total, 110 of which will be able to run because of safety considerations at the various distances. That averages out to 11 horses a race, a number not seen very often in Southern California and no doubt an indicator of the popularity of racing at the shore oval, which has become one of America's premier horse racing meccas.

The day will draw its usual big buzz in San Diego – there will be skydivers, a highly fashionable Hats Contest, lovely ladies dressed in summer delights, their gents sporting jackets and panamas and – for the second year in a row – a sold-out facility. The track has chosen to limit Friday's attendance primarily for the convenience of its patrons and all tickets have been spoken for. The crowd should be somewhere around 22,000. Last year the track limited its attendance to approximately 15,000 due to COVID restrictions.

The Oceanside appears to have a highly competitive field and luck will surely be a factor in the large group spread across the track's deep, green Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Possible favorite in the stakes is ERJ Racing, Madaket Stables, et al's Mackinnon, a colt by Triple Crown hero American Pharoah who is already a stakes winner at a mile on the Del Mar grass having taken the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes here last September. The chestnut subsequently ran third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, which was run at Del Mar last November 5.

Trainer Doug O'Neill will give top local rider Juan Hernandez a leg up on Mackinnon, who'll be coming into the race off a series of sharp workouts following a five-month break from the races.

Chief threat to McKinnon could be Little Red Feather Racing and Madaket Stable's Balnikhov, an Irish-bred gelding who has been close-up in a trio of stakes this year since coming over Europe. The steady soph has won three times, placed three times and finished third twice in 11 races so far and trainer Phil D'Amato has assigned top turf rider Umberto Rispoli as his partner.

Mackinnon breaks from Post 1, while Balnikhov goes from Post 8.

Del Mar will race Friday through Sunday for its first week, then go on a regular Thursday through Sunday schedule for the majority of the meet. There will be racing on Labor Day Monday, September 5, followed by a Friday-through-Sunday final week closing out the session on Sunday, September 11. The track's foremost offering – the $1,000,000, Grade I TVG Pacific Classic – will be presented for the 32nd time this year on Saturday, September 3.

Taiba Favored in Haskell

GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby hero and 'TDN Rising Star' Taiba (Gun Runner) was given the morning-line nod from post postion two at odds of 7-5 in the 55th GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational S. Saturday at Monmouth Park. The nine-furlong centerpiece of the summer meeting at the Jersey Shore offers the winner a fees-paid berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland Nov. 5.

It was a little more than three years ago that Maximum Security (New Year's Day) won the Haskell on a day where temperatures soared so high during the early afternoon that the race was delayed until late in the evening. The heat is on again this weekend, with forecast highs in the low to mid 90s. Trainer Bob Baffert is back in action following his three-month suspension and is hopeful he's shipped across the horse who can give him a record-extending 10th victory in the Haskell. Mike Smith, aboard Authentic (Into Mischief) in 2020, has the call.

“I don't think about records,” Baffert said. “I just think about sending a good horse there and I've sent some really great ones. I hope this guy is the same type of horse I've been bringing up there. We know he's very talented. He has to break well. Then it's going to be up to Mike.”

Not far behind him on the morning-line at 3-2 is undefeated MGISW 'Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings), who will be in stall seven of eight. The flashy chestnut tries two turns for the first time Saturday off a good-looking score in the GI Woody Stephens S. June 11. Trainer Chad Brown looks for a second Haskell, having saddled Good Magic (Curlin) to win in 2018.

The rest of the field is as follows: Cyberknife (Gun Runner), post 1, 6-1; One Time Willard (Micromanage), post 3, 30-1; Howling Time (Not This Time), post 4, 10-1; King of Hollywood (Palace Malice), post 5, 30-1; White Abarrio (Race Day), post 6, 5-1; Benevengo (Gormley) post 8, 20-1.

Extreme Heat: Ellis Park Moves Up Weekend Post Times

Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., is moving post time for the first race to 10:30 a.m. Central for this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday because of the forecast for extreme heat.

“Obviously the safety of our racehorses and backstretch personnel is paramount,” said Ellis Park General Manager Jeff Inman. “By starting more than two hours early, we will avoid the full brunt of the heat.

“Horses racing at Ellis Park over the decades have demonstrated remarkable resilience to heat, but we will be doing everything we can to ensure they can race safely. In addition to the much earlier start, that includes having multiple water stations and hoses at regular intervals around the track. Our state veterinarian staff will be hyper-vigilant looking for any signs of adverse reactions to the heat and be poised to act immediately.

“We wanted to go on and make the announcement to give our horsemen plenty of time to rework shipping plans where necessary.”

Training Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be 5-8 a.m. CT with no renovation break. The gate will be open for schooling from 6-8 a.m.

Weekly Rulings: July 11-17

Every week, the TDN publishes a roundup of key official rulings from the primary tracks within the four major racing jurisdictions of California, New York, Florida and Kentucky.

Here's a primer on how each of these jurisdictions adjudicates different offenses, what they make public (or not) and where.

New York
Track: N/A
Date: 07/18/2022
Licensee: Juan Vazquez, trainer
Penalty: Suspension
Violation: Reciprocity of suspension for “grossly negligent, cruel and abusive” behavior.
Explainer: Trainer Juan Carlos Vazquez is prohibited from participating in any New York State horse racing activity as his suspension by the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission goes into effect today. During this time, Mr. Vazquez is suspended in New York and cannot enter horses to run at any New York track, including The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) tracks (Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course) or Finger Lakes Race Track. New York is one of 38 racing states that honors out-of-state suspensions issued by regulators. Reciprocity is addressed specifically in N.Y. Racing, Pari-Mutuel Wagering and Breeding Law Section 910: “§ 910. Reciprocity of licenses. All license denials, suspensions and revocations imposed by the pertinent racing and gambling authorities of other jurisdictions, including states, United States territories, and Canadian provinces shall be recognized and enforced by the commission …”
