Beckett ‘Happy’ With Westover Ahead Of King George

Last month's G1 Irish Derby hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is pleasing trainer Ralph Beckett in advance of his next start in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. on Saturday. The field for the Ascot prize is high on quality, with the G1 Oaks second Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), also signed on for the 3-year-old brigade. The 2021 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), as well as fellow Group 1 winners Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) have lined up, as well.

“He's trained well since, we've been happy with him and he looks like he's ready to go,” Beckett told TalkSPORT2 of his charge, who will be ridden once again by Colin Keane.

“Races like this are what we all do it for, days like Saturday, they don't come around too often so you've got to make the most of them.

“Juddmonte have an agreement with Colin Keane to ride their horses when he's available. This is just an extension of that.

“We don't have a stable jockey, we have three jockeys who ride for us regularly but if an owner wants someone else that is their prerogative and all concerned understand that.

“Colin obviously knows the horse now and in that sense it is pretty straightforward.

“It was great for Rob [Hornby] to win the [G1] Falmouth [S. on Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire})], he's been coming here once or twice a week for the last three years and that has been a very happy arrangement and we've had plenty of luck, that was a second Group 1 inside nine months.”

Epicenter ‘Visually Impressive’ In Work Toward Jim Dandy

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Epicenter worked five-eighths in 1:01.13 Monday over the Oklahoma dirt training track at Saratoga, dominating his company, the 3-year-old maiden Flute Master [1:03.12].

Epicenter, a Not This Time sophomore, boasts a record of 8-4-3-0 for purse earnings in excess of $1.9 million. He is targeting the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy, a nine-furlong test for sophomores on July 30.

“Visually-impressive is what he is,” Asmussen said. “He's an extremely talented horse and he's doing well. His work Monday was as good of a work as I've seen from him, and I've seen some impressive works from him. It's a good time to be doing well.”

Epicenter enjoyed a pair of Grade 2 wins over the winter at Fair Grounds, taking the Risen Star in February and the Louisiana Derby in March. He was sent to post as the 4-1 favorite in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby in May, finishing a close second when defeated just three-quarters of a length by Rich Strike. He enters the Jim Dandy from a rallying second in the Grade 1 Preakness on May 21 at Pimlico.

J. Kirk and Judy Robison's Jackie's Warrior, the reigning Eclipse Award-winning Male Sprinter, breezed five furlongs in 1:00.72 Sunday over the Oklahoma dirt training track in company with 3-year-old maiden winner Favorite Outlaw in preparation for a start in the Grade 1, $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt on July 30.

He will also potentially start later this summer in the Grade 1, $600,000 Forego on August 27 as part of his path towards a return engagement in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Keeneland.

The 4-year-old Maclean's Music colt is a perfect 3-for-3 this year, boasting wins in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap in April at Oaklawn, the Grade 1 Churchill Downs in May and a five-length romp last out in the Grade 2 True North on June 10 at Belmont.

“It's so rare to have a Champion colt be back in training and not only that, his three runs this year have been visually impressive,” Asmussen said. “He had a nice work here on Sunday and we're on target for the Vanderbilt.”

Jackie's Warrior, bred in Kentucky by J & J Stables, is a perfect 4-for-4 at the Spa, including juvenile scores in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special and Grade 1 Hopeful along with wins last summer in the Grade 2 Amsterdam ahead of a game neck score over eventual Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile-winner Life Is Good in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial.

“We want more of the same from him. He's 4-for 4 here which is an unbelievable record,” Asmussen said. “His win here in the Allen Jerkens against Life Is Good was as good of a horse race as I've been involved with. It was wonderful to come out on the right side of that.”

Jackie's Warrior made the first of seven sophomore starts on the Kentucky Derby trail, finishing third in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn before returning to one-turn races with aplomb with a head score in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs. He followed with a good second when defeated a neck by Drain the Clock in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens at Belmont in a campaign that culminated with a win in the Grade 2 Gallant Bob in September at Parx ahead of a sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Del Mar.

Asmussen will also be represented by multiple Grade 1-winner Clairiere in Sunday's Grade 2 $200,000 Shuvee in a re-match with familiar foe Malathaat. Entries for the Shuvee will be taken on Thursday.

Pacific Classic Shifted Back To Labor Day Weekend

This year's $1 million TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar has been moved back two weeks to the Labor Day weekend on Sept. 3. Like much of the stakes schedule, the date of the Classic, which will be run for the 32nd time this year, had to be changed to accommodate the late start to the meet, which kicks off a week later than usual on July 22.

Racing Secretary David Jerkens says having the entire meet go a week beyond Labor Day, to Sept. 11, caused them to look at the schedule differently.

“The Pacific Classic,” he said, “we could have left it where it was last year (August 21st in 2021), but now your prep races, like the San Diego, are a little quick. So we thought, Labor Day weekend would be the way to go.“

It's not the first time the date has been changed for Del Mar's premiere event. The Grade 1 Classic has been run as early as Aug. 9 and as late as Aug. 30. It was even run on a Sunday for many years. But never Labor Day weekend. Jerkens says that was the logical spot.

“If you run it the week we ran it last year, that third week of August, with your meet going until Sept. 11, it's kind of in the middle of the meet more than at the end, where it typically is,” he noted. “The following week is the Travers and we try to avoid that Saturday.”

Another benefit of running the TVG Pacific Classic — a 'Win and You're In' race for the Breeders' Cup Classic –in its current spot is that it aligns perfectly with the Breeders' Cup Classic almost exactly two months later. A trainer can run in the TVG Pacific Classic on Sept. 3 and have the desired four weeks to run in another prep race, like the Awesome Again at Santa Anita, and still have an additional four weeks to get ready for the big race.

This year's TVG Pacific Classic is expected to attract racing's hottest item, the undefeated Flightline, fresh off a dominating win in the G1 Met Mile at Belmont Park in June. The son of Tapit is stabled in John Sadler's barn here at Del Mar.

Down Royal Bests Her Male Rivals In A.P. Smithwick Memorial

Shadowfax Stable's New York-bred Down Royal, the lone mare in a field of seven, came home the best over her six rivals in Wednesday's Grade 1, $150,000 A.P. Smithwick Memorial to kick off steeplechase action at the Saratoga Race Course meet.

Expertly piloted to victory by Bernard Dalton, husband of trainer Kate Dalton, the 8-year-old daughter of Alphabet Soup scored the first graded victory of her career after closing from off the pace in the 2 1/16-mile affair over the hurdles. Down Royal extended her win streak to four-in-a-row for Dalton, dating back to her first stakes score in the Randolph D. Rouse last August at Colonial Downs.

Down Royal started from post 2 and was held patiently behind the pace set by Pistol Whipped, who led the field through the first two jumps as Iranistan was asked to take second position passing the wire for the first time. Chief Justice tracked in third along the rail as Pistol Whipped set the tempo over the firm turf.

Iranistan was asked by pilot Jack Doyle to make up ground down for the first pass down the backstretch and found himself in a three-way battle for the lead with Pistol Whipped and Chief Justice as they approached the fifth jump. Pistol Whipped struggled with that jump and quickly faded to the back of the field with Iranistan and Redicean leading them around the third turn and to the final fence. With the frontrunners tiring, the Barry Foley-piloted Chief Justice took command approaching the turn for home.

Dalton got to work aboard Down Royal, who made up ground from last to the outside of Chief Justice and continued to respond to urging on the outside path. Dalton called an audible in the stretch drive and angled her to the inside as Chief Justice was in an all-out drive to the wire, battling on gamely until Down Royal was able to get her neck in front at the wire in a final time of 3:49.57.

French Light chased behind the top two and checked in third 1 1/4 lengths behind Chief Justice with Historic Heart rounding out the superfecta another seven lengths back. Redicean and Iranistan completed the order of finish while the pacesetter Pistol Whipped was eased after 1 1/2 miles and vanned off.

Kate Dalton said it was not until late in the race that she was confident Down Royal would pull off the victory.

“About a stride before the wire,” said Dalton, with a laugh. “She was coming around the far turn and moving forward into third and frankly, I was delighted with that. The others were backing up and if she ended up staying where she is and being third, it would be a great run. But then she got up to second and it didn't look like she was going to pass Chief Justice and I was delighted with second, but she just kept giving 100 percent. It's what she does. I don't know why she's suddenly got so good, but she has.”

The win was the second Grade 1 victory at the Spa for Dalton, who sent out Diplomat to upset the 2017 Grade 1 New York Turf Writers Cup Handicap [now the Jonathan Sheppard], also with her husband in the irons.

“I didn't think I was coming here to pull a Diplomat, but apparently I was,” the conditioner said.

Bernard Dalton said it was emotional to win a Grade 1 aboard Down Royal, who he has piloted in 18-of-19 starts over the hurdles.

“This filly got me my 100th winner as a jockey at Nashville over jumps in America and you can't write that script,” Dalton said. “To come here and win a Grade 1 on a filly that you [bred] and have ridden probably 99.9 percent of the time in our eight years, you can't describe the feeling it gives you to accomplish this.”

Foley was full of praise for both Chief Justice's runner-up effort and for Down Royal's determined victory.

“It was a big run for him,” said Foley. “He was just very unlucky to get run down by a good filly, to be fair. It was a massive run out of her and I'm delighted for Bernie and Kate Dalton, they're hard triers and they deserve that. I think they're going to get a nice check for this because the winner is New York-bred and she gets the bonus.”

Down Royal, who was bred by Bernard and Kate Dalton, returned $15.60 for a $2 win wager. She earned $90,000 for her victory and now boasts a record of 23-6-6-2 with total purse earnings to $269,974.
