‘Good Kick’ Propels Rockemperor To Bowling Green Win, Millionaire Status

Rockemperor became racing's newest millionaire with a come-from-behind victory in Sunday's $250,000 Bowling Green (G2) going 1 3/8 miles over the inner turf at Saratoga Race Course.

Now boasting a record of 5-5-6 from 25 lifetime starts, Rockemperor banked $137,500 in victory, which brought his overall bankroll to $1,134,904. He returned $6.90 for a $2 win wager.

Owned by Michael Dubb, Wonder Stables, Madaket Stables, Michael E. Kisber, and Michael J. Caruso, Rockemperor finished a non-threatening fifth in both starts this year, which took place in Belmont Park's Fort Marcy (G2) and Manhattan (G1). The 6-year-old Irish-bred son of Holy Roman Emperor made his third 2022 start the charm, providing trainer Chad Brown with his fourth stakes victory at the meet.

Breaking from the outermost post 5, Rockemperor bumped with Cross Border, the winner of the last two runnings of the Bowling Green, as the Manny Franco-piloted stablemate L'Imperator set the tempo with Highland Chief just to his outside in second passing the grandstand. L'Imperator marked the opening quarter mile in :24.62 over the firm going with Rockemperor 3 1/2 lengths back in fifth towards the rear of the compact field.

Positions remained unchanged as L'Imperator led through a half-mile in :50.21 and three-quarters in 1:16.21, but the pace began to quicken as the field rounded the far turn.

Rockemperor made a sweeping three-wide move approaching the quarter pole with L'Imperator still to catch, confronting his stable mate inside the eighth pole, but a new challenge loomed as Arklow launched a late menacing bid. Nevertheless, Rockemperor had enough to stave off Arklown, winning by a half-length under Flavien Prat in a final time of 2:15.81.

Arklow finished another half-length ahead of third-place L'Imperator with Highland Chief and Cross Border rounding out the order of finish. Cibolian was scratched.

Rockemperor, second in last year's Bowling Green, secured his second North American graded stakes victory, and first trip to the winner's circle since a 15-1 upset win in last year's Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) at Belmont Park.

Prat, who piloted Rockemperor to victory in a turf allowance last June at Belmont, said his trip went according to plan.

“Going into the first turn, everybody kind of went so it worked out well and I got myself towards the inside, then I was traveling well all the way around,” Prat said. “I was pleased where I was and when I tipped him out, he gave me a good kick.”

Brown said the firm turf played heavily to Rockemperor's favor.

“The key to this horse is getting him on firm turf like today,” Brown said. “He had a really good trip today and I was really pleased with the way it worked out. Flavien did a great job. We had a plan and it pretty much went exactly the way we thought for both horses. Manny rode a great race and almost pulled it off. We talked about using him a bit early and then then backing it up down the backside and he did it beautifully.”

Brown was unsure as to Rockemperor's next outing, but echoed his desire to get the seasoned veteran over firm turf.

“He's getting up there in age but he's starting to round back into form. I think the key is getting into the fall and getting the firmer ground is going to be a little more challenging,” Brown said. “We'll keep every option open and see where he takes us.”

Brown said the triumph was extra special since many of the ownership partners were in attendance of the race.

“That's really what Saratoga is all about – a day with good weather and a lot of the partners are here,” Brown said. “It made for a great memory. A lot of pictures will be ordered on this one.”

Arklow, an 8-year-old veteran who made his 2022 debut off a nine-month layoff, surpassed $3 million in lifetime earnings when finishing second.

Trainer Brad Cox said the son of the late champion-producer Arch will likely use his runner-up effort as a springboard to the Kentucky Turf Cup (G3) on September 10 at Kentucky Downs, a race he has won on two non-consecutive occasions [2018 and 2020]. Arklow was third in the 2019 Bowling Green.

“I thought he was ready to run today and he was; came up a little bit short,” Cox said. “We didn't really have a clean run down the lane, but overall, this was a step towards Kentucky Downs and we're going to hopefully be competitive for the race he always shows up [in]. I think he wins [with a cleaner trip]. I think he's right there – he was right there – but he makes it very, very interesting if he gets a clean run down the lane.”

Rockemperor was bred by Haras du Mezeray from the Muhtathir mare Motivation.

Pletcher Triple-Handed For Whitney, Breeders’ Cup Classic Berth

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will have three chances to win his fourth Whitney (G1) Saturday when he saddles Life Is Good, Americanrevolution, and Happy Saver the $1 million nine-furlong test for older horses.

The 95th renewal of the Whitney will offer a “Win and You're In” berth to the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) in November at Keeneland.

CHC Inc. and WinStar Farm's Life Is Good, a 4-year-old Into Mischief bay, boasts a record of 7-1-0 from nine starts and purse earnings in excess of $3.5 million. He notched Grade 1 wins in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in November at Del Mar and the Pegasus World Cup Invitational in January at Gulfstream Park.

Life Is Good, who enters from a win in the John A. Nerud (G2) on July 2 at Belmont, breezed a half-mile in :48.25 Saturday over the main track under exercise rider Amelia Green.

“He was his normal impressive self,” Pletcher said.

CHC Inc. and WinStar Farm's Americanrevolution, a New York-bred son of Constitution, captured the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) in December at Aqueduct. He has posted four triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in his last five starts, including a 108 for his runner-up effort to Whitney rival Olympiad last out in the Stephen Foster (G2) on July 2 at Churchill Downs.

He worked in company with Happy Saver on Saturday over the Saratoga main track, covering a half-mile in :49.75.

“I thought it went well and we were very happy with the breeze,” Pletcher said.

Alain and Gerard Wertheimer's homebred Happy Saver boasts a ledger of 5-4-1 from 10 starts and purse earnings of $988,300. He captured the 2020 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont and finished second last year in his title defense to Max Player at Saratoga.

Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride Life Is Good, while Luis Saez retains the mount on Americanrevolution. A rider for Happy Saver, most recently piloted by Ortiz, has yet to be determined.

Dwyer Winner Charge It Preparing For Travers

Whisper Hill Farm's homebred Charge It, unplaced in the Kentucky Derby (G1) this spring, breezed a half-mile in :49.06 Saturday over the Saratoga main track in his first breeze back following a 23-length win in the one-mile Dwyer (G3) on July 2 at Belmont.

Pletcher said he was pleased with the effort as he readies the gray Tapit colt for the $1.25 million Runhappy Travers (G1) on August 27 at the Spa.

“We're very pleased. We're right on target,” Pletcher said. “We set out to have four breezes like we did before the Dwyer and the first one went really well. We'll do a little more in the next couple weeks. So far, so good.”

The Dwyer was Charge It's first race since finishing 17th in the Kentucky Derby on May 7 at Churchill Downs after which he underwent a throat procedure for a displaced soft palate.

Charge It has a 2-2-0 record from five career starts this year, including a runner-up finish in the Florida Derby (G1) April 2 in his stakes debut.

Gunite Game in Amsterdam Victory, Corniche Fades to Last

While all eyes were on returning champion Corniche (Quality Road) who faded to last, Gunite (Gun Runner) completed a big weekend at Saratoga for Winchell Thoroughbreds and trainer Steve Asmussen with a gritty victory in the GII Amsterdam S. in upstate New York Sunday. Sent off at 7-1, last year's GI Hopeful S. winner battled Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) through fractions of :21.78 and :44.60, while Corniche sat in stalking position behind the dueling leaders. As the champ backed up on the turn, Gunite strode to the lead into the lane before bravely holding off Accretive (Practical Joke) to win by a neck while completing the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.75.

“It's just nice to come back to where he won his Grade I last year and have another win in a Grade II,” said owner Ron Winchell. “He was training great. He was training like he wanted to go on from his 2-year-old year and do exactly what he did. Sometimes, you never know if they move on and continue to win graded stakes, but he got it done today.”

Of Corniche, jockey Luis Saez said, “He broke good and was in a good position. He was right there. He probably needed the race.”

Winchell Thoroughbreds was in the Saratoga winner's circle Saturday with GII Jim Dandy S. winner Epicenter (Not This Time), while Asmussen made the trip with both Epicenter and GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. winner Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music).

“We've been blessed with some extremely nice horses and they make it all possible,” Asmussen said of his Spa weekend.

Gunite, who captured his maiden at Churchill Downs last June, finished second in the Aug. 14 GII Saratoga Special before romping home by 5 3/4 lengths in the Sept. 6 GI Hopeful S. He went to the sidelines following a fifth-place effort in the Oct. 2 GI Champagne S., but showed he had improved with the time off when he returned to action with a runner-up effort in a Churchill optional claimer June 3. He prepped for this return to graded action with another gritty victory in the July 3 Maxfield S. in Louisville last time out.

“In his last race, he wasn't away cleanly and it put him in a different position,” Asmussen said. “I thought that was a similar race to the horse we ran here last year, just handy and in a good spot, tenacious to the wire. Extremely good win and obviously we're on to the [Aug. 27 GI] Allen Jerkens from here.”

Pedigree Notes:

Gunite was one of three first-crop juveniles by Gun Runner to win graded stakes at Saratoga last summer and is one of the Three Chimneys sire's five Grade I winners to date. The stallion was represened last weekend by GI Haskell S. winner Cyberknife and runner-up Taiba.

Gunite is the first foal out of Winchell homebred and stakes winner Simple Surprise, who has an unraced 2-year-old full-sister to Gunite named Surprise Attack who sold for $400,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. The mare also has a yearling filly by Copper Bullet and a weanling filly by Tapiture. She was bred back to Gun Runner this year.

Winchell Thoroughbreds also bred and campaigned Gunite's second dam, stakes winner and graded placed Simplify.
