‘I Was Riding For My Dad’: DeShawn Parker Records 6,000th Career Win

Tuesday, June 21, will be a date that forever sticks with Jockey DeShawn Parker. He rallied home aboard For Mama to score his 6,000th career win, a feat that only 20 other jockeys have accomplished in the history of Thoroughbred racing.

Parker started off his night two wins away from the milestone and connected with Wicket Intent in the third race of the night for Trainer Caio Caramori. Parker had one more shot on the card at Horseshoe Indianapolis. There, he climbed aboard the Jeff Greenhill-trained For Mama seeking to complete the milestone.

For Mama got away in heavy traffic in the six-furlong sprint and racing room never shook loose and was surrounded, so Parker kept the 3-year-old gelding behind leaders Circle Indy and Alex Achard, Got Lost and Sammy Bermudez, and Runaway Image and Declan Cannon. Around the turn, the field remained tightly bunched and it appeared For Mama would have to wait for another day to break his maiden. But Parker did what he's done so many times before, he waited patiently until the right time arrived.

That time arrived a quarter of the way down the stretch for Parker and For Mama. A slight opening appeared between Got Lost on the inside and Circle Indy on the outside. It took a little urging at first, but Parker encouraged For Mama to split rivals to find the racing room they needed. Once he was through, it was only Got Lost he had to get past. The two matched each other stride for stride until late in the stretch when For Mama got the slim margin at the wire for the win, just a head in front of Got Lost. Golden Rapper and Marcelino Pedroza Jr. closed in to finish third.

For Mama was the favorite of the maiden field, paying $2.60 for the win. The Can the Man Indiana bred gelding is owned by James Wyenandt's Bosharon Stable, who also teamed up with In Good Company Farm as the breeder.

Parker was joined by Eric Halstrom, vice president and general manager of racing, along with Rachel McLaughlin, racing broadcast manager, for the presentation. Several jockeys came in to help Parker celebrate such a significant milestone.

“This means the world to me, and I was riding for my dad, because I couldn't have been here without him,” said Parker, who lost his father, Daryl, a longtime steward in the state of Ohio in the spring of 2021 to cancer. “He knew I was getting close to this milestone, but he never said much about any of the milestones. He's the one that kept me calm, and if I was getting worked up over something, I would give him a call and tell him what was going on and he'd calm me down. I miss not being able to do that.”

Parker earned his 5,000th  career win at Mountaineer Park in 2016. He moved his tack to Indiana on a full-time basis in 2017 and scored the leading rider title at the track just three years later in 2020. In five and one-half years of riding at Horseshoe Indianapolis, he is already among the track's top 10 with 492 career wins and just under $13 million in earnings in Indiana.

“I'm happy to get this (milestone) done,” added Parker. “I wanted to do it, and I've been trying to do it, but it seemed like I just didn't have the right horse at the right time. Everyone kept encouraging me to get it, which was nice, but I have to say it's even better than I expected to get this milestone. It's a load off, and I couldn't be happier.”

Parker's milestone win will forever be remembered aboard For Mama for Father Daryl.

Premiership Betting Review – 9 April 2006

Manchester United look set to push Chelsea all the way for the Premiership title following a convincing 2-0 win over Arsenal. Wayne Rooney struck confidently after 53 minutes while Ji Sung Park’s first league goal on 77 earned three precious points at 11/10.

Chelsea brushed aside West Ham United 4-1 at Stamford Bridge despite falling a goal behind and being reduced to 10 men early on. Defender James Collins gave the 12/1 Hammers a dream start after nine minutes and Maniche saw a straight red for a lunging tackle on Lionel Scaloni shortly after.

But two goals in as many minutes from Didier Drogba on 28 and Hernan Crespo on 30 put Chelsea back in control. Further strikes from John Terry on 53 and William Gallas on 68 ensured the 3/10 on a home win was never in doubt.

Liverpool recorded a fifth straight win as Bolton Wanderers suffered a fourth consecutive defeat as they succumbed 1-0 at Anfield. Robbie Fowler celebrated his 31sy birthday by netting the decisive goal for the 8/15 Reds on the stroke of half-time.

Tottenham Hotspur maintained their credentials for a Champions League place next season with a 2-1 win against Manchester City. Paul Stalteri gave 8/13 Spurs the lead a minute before the break while Michael Carrick added a second on 49. Georgios Samaras hit back three minutes later but Martin Jol’s side eased to victory.

Birmingham City’s good run of form continued as they picked up a useful point at Wigan Athletic. Paul Jewell’s side, without a home win this year, took the lead through Andreas Johansson three minutes after the break but David Dunn earned a 13/5 draw on 76.

Portsmouth salvaged a point against Blackburn Rovers. Craig Bellamy gave Rovers the lead after 32 minutes but Lomano LuaLua levelled four minutes before the break. Bellamy put the visitors in front again on 62 but substitute Svetoslav Todorov earned Pompey a share of the points at odds of 9/4 with 12 minutes left.

West Bromwich Albion saw two precious points slip from their grasp as they drew 0-0 with rivals Aston Villa in the Midlands derby. The draw, available before kick-off at 23/10 before, mean Brian Robson’s side remain two points adrift of safety.

Sunderland’s crunch-game against Fulham was abandoned after 21 minutes because of bad weather conditions at the Stadium of Light. Referee Mike Riley abandoned proceeding after 21 minutes after heavy snow made the pitch unplayable. Brian McBride gave the 5/4 Cottagers the lead but the result will not stand.

CHRB Charges Richard Baltas With Having 23 Horses Improperly Administered Race-Day Substance

Trainer Richard Baltas has been charged with 23 counts of violating California Horse Racing Board rules prohibiting administration of race-day substances from April 15 and May 8, 2022. CHRB stewards also cited violations of the absolute insurer and conduct detrimental to horse racing rules in their complaint posted on the CHRB website on Tuesday.

According to the complaint, surveillance videos documented employees of the Baltas stable administering substances to horses on days they were entered to race on 23 occasions. The complaint states the substance was analyzed by the University of California, Davis, which reported the presence of Higenamine and Paeonol.

Higenamine is a dietary supplement that is prohibited in human athletes by the World Anti-Doping Agency as a B2-agonist. It can occur naturally in a Chinese herb. Paeonol is another natural product that has been used in humans to treat inflammation. Neither is on the list of prohibited substances of the Association of Racing Commissioners International, but CHRB rules prohibit the administration of dietary supplements on race day.

Baltas was banned from participating at tracks owned by The Stronach Group after one of his entries, Noble Reflection, was a late stewards scratch on Santa Anita's 10th race on May 8. The CHRB said at the time it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the scratch, presumably by reviewing videos of the Baltas barn captured by one of the 1,000 state-of-the-art surveillance cameras that were installed throughout the Santa Anita stable area in 2016.

Although the Stronach Group ban was not a regulatory action that prevented Baltas from racing elsewhere, most of the horses from his large stable have been dispersed to other trainers. Since May 8, Baltas has had six starters at Churchill Downs and one at Lone Star Park.

Since taking out his trainer's license in 1991, Baltas has won 722 races from 4,265 starters for earnings of $43,7 million. He's won seven Grade 1 races among 50 graded stakes throughout his career.

Baltas has been ordered to appear before the board of stewards at Los Alamitos racetrack on July 1 at 10 a.m. PT.
