Federal Equine Protection Legislation Advances

Two key pieces of equine protection legislation advanced out of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Consumer Protection June 24, most notably the Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, H.R. 3355, which would permanently ban the transport of horses bound for slaughter. The measure was endorsed by more than 225 equine-related businesses, groups, and organizations, as well as a wide array of stake holders which included The Jockey Club; The Breeders' Cup; Water, Hay, Oats Alliance (WHOA); and the New York Racing Association (NYRA).

Advancing alongside was the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 5441. PAST would eliminate the use of large, stacked shoes and ankle chains that are placed on Tennessee Walkers' feet to exacerbate pain in the show ring and produce the 'Big Lick' action. It would also revamp the USDA's inspection program and provide felony level penalties to give teeth to the HPA. The advance puts the bills in motion and creates an opportunity for additional legislating in the House and Senate.

Graham Motion Will Take Over Training Of Group 2 Winner Royal Patronage After Belmont Derby

Royal Patronage, winner of last year's Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket, will make his next start in the $1 million Belmont Derby on July 9. After that, ownership Highclere Thoroughbred Racing will leave the 3-year-old Wootton Bassett colt in the United States with trainer Graham Motion, according to the Racing Post.

Currently conditioned by Charlie and Mark Johnston, Royal Patronage appeared to struggle with the going last out in the Epsom Derby. Transferring the colt to the U.S., where the turf courses are often much firmer than those found in Europe, could help Royal Patronage achieve his full potential.

“He's a horse who loves good or faster ground and is not short of tactical speed, probably more mile and a quarter than mile and a half,” said Highclere's managing director Harry Herbert. “He's got really good form and we just felt it might give him the best chance of earning very big prize-money and running in Group 1 turf races in the States versus here where you might get soft ground.”

Royal Patronage will run in Johnston's name in the Belmont Derby, then be transferred to Motion's stable. Overall, the colt has a record of three wins and two seconds from nine starts, with earnings of $211,893.

“He's the first of our horses at this level to go out there and stay there and it's a great adventure for everyone,” added Herbert.

‘She Tries Hard Every Time’: Golden Vision Chasing Repeat In Sunday’s Ballade

Golden Vision, a 6-year-old daughter of Court Vision-Good as Gold, looks to defend her title in Sunday's $100,000 Ballade Stakes at Woodbine.

A six-furlong main track event for Ontario Sired fillies & mares, 4-year-olds and upward, the Ballade has attracted a competitive field of 13 starters.

Trained by Tino Attard for owners/breeders Elizabeth and Gordon Lickrish, Golden Vision rallied to take last year's running by a half-length at 6-1.

Although the dark bay hasn't returned to the winner's circle since that score, the lifetime winner of five races from 19 starts has finished in the top four over her past four engagements.

Golden Vision arrives at the Ballade off a runner-up effort on May 14, finishing strongly in the six-furlong main track race won by Spanish Ballerina (third in last year's race), whom she'll meet again on Sunday.

“She ran a very good race,” said Attard, who has 1,365 career wins. “She came into that race well and she's coming into this one in really good order too. She's been training well and hopefully she can do what she did in this race last year.”

Launching her career on December 1, 2018, Golden Vision won her debut, rallying from eighth of 12 at the half-mile call to take the six-furlong main track race by a length, in what was her only start of the season.

She would finish in the top four in her first nine starts, including a fourth in the Passing Mood, her first stakes try, and a third in the La Prevoyante Stakes, both in 2019.

“From day one, she has been a really nice horse for us,” said Attard. “She's one of those horses you love to have because she tries hard every time. She has a big heart. Around the barn, she's very quiet. When she races, she's a very honest horse. She's always been very consistent.”

Golden Vision could join Barlee Mist (1999-2000), Mysterious Affair (2001-02) and Brass in Pocket (2003-04) as back-to-back winners of the Ballade.

Other starters include multiple stakes winner Lorena, graded stakes winner Artie's Princess, and 2020 South Ocean Stakes winner Jilli Marie.

The race is part of Ontario Racing's Thoroughbred Improvement Program Ontario Sired Stakes Program. For more information on the program, click here.

The Ballade is race seven on Sunday's 10-race card. First post time is 1:10 p.m. Fans can also watch and wager on all the action through HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse Bets app.

NYRA Triple Play Features Turf Racing From Belmont Park

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will offer a NYRA Triple Play wager on Sunday featuring three turf races at Belmont Park.

The NYRA Triple Play, a Pick 3 wager with a $3 bet minimum available exclusively to retail customers, has a takeout rate of 19 percent. Initially offered as the final three races on the Sunday card, the NYRA Triple Play will now feature three specially selected races.

Sunday's sequence kicks off in Race 2 at 1:32 p.m. Eastern with a state-bred maiden special weight field of seven fillies and mares 3-years-old and up travelling six furlongs over the inner turf. Christophe Clement will send out a pair of top contenders in Coolcatsnkittens and Saratoga Gaze. The former, a sophomore daughter of Vancouver, closed to finish second at second asking in her seasonal debut May 27 in a six-furlong maiden claiming sprint on the Belmont turf. The latter, a 4-year-old Laoban dark bay, has hit the board in all three career starts, including a close third last out on November 21 sprinting six furlongs over the Aqueduct Racetrack turf.

The second leg will feature a field of 11 fillies and mares 3-years-old and up sprinting seven furlongs over the Widener turf in a $35,000 claiming tilt [Race 5, 3:03 p.m.]. A contentious group includes Translate, who makes her first start since finishing a close third in a six-furlong turf allowance on March 19 at Santa Anita for trainer Robert Falcone, Jr. Lionessofbrittany, trained and co-owned by Steve Klesaris, finished second last out in the five-furlong Melody of Colors in March 2021 over the Gulfstream Park turf. Summer At the Spa, trained by Michelle Nevin, offers recency while entering from a 1 3/4-length claiming score on May 22 over the Belmont turf, besting next-out allowance winner Tis a Pity.

Closing out the sequence in Race 9 at 5:12 p.m. is an overflow field of state-bred fillies and mares 3-and-up traveling one-mile over the Widener turf in a $40,000 maiden claiming event. The Barclay Tagg-trained Cupere, who finished off-the-board in a trio of maiden special weight starts on the turf, shows back-to-back bullet works as she drops for a tag for the first time. Our Jessica, a veteran of six starts, also makes her debut in the claiming ranks for red-hot conditioner David Donk. The Clement-trained Smokin' Hot Kitty, who finished fifth in a pair of state-bred maiden turf sprints, will also attract attention in a field of 12 with many chances and four also-eligible entrants.

Featuring a $3 bet minimum, the NYRA Triple Play will cover three races on Sunday cards throughout the 44-day Belmont spring/summer meet. Each NYRA Triple Play will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool. Wagering on the NYRA Triple Play will be available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country.
