‘Never Had So Many Accolades For Finishing Second’: Spendarella Returns Stateside After Big Ascot Effort

Trainer Graham Motion said Gainesway Farm's Spendarella arrived stateside Thursday following her strong second in the Group 1 Coronation on June 17 at Royal Ascot.

The 3-year-old New York-bred daughter of Karakontie won her first three starts, including scores in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride at Gulfstream Park and Grade 2 Appalachian at Keeneland ahead of her 4 3/4-length defeat by the undefeated Inspiral in the one-mile Coronation.

Motion, who finished second in the 2020 Coronation with Sharing, said he was proud of the runner-up effort engineered by William Buick.

“I've never had so many accolades for finishing second in a race,” said Motion, with a laugh. “While it was a little frustrating to come up second again in that race, it was very rewarding that she proved that she belonged. There were several Group 1 winners behind her.”

Motion said he will take his time finding a next spot for the homebred, although the nine-furlong Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on August 20 is a possibility.

“It's a little tricky to place her going forward,” Motion said. “William felt pretty strongly she's a miler and I think he's probably right, although over here maybe you would get away with a mile and an eighth with our firm flat turf courses. We'll probably look at anything up to a mile and an eighth from here on out, but I'm not in a hurry to run her back. I think she's a Grade 1 filly and I'd like to keep her in Grade 1s. We'll see how the summer goes.

“She ran so well and has had four races now this year,” Motion added. “There's a couple races in the fall I'd like to have her around for. She came back pretty well and is actually in quarantine at Churchill right now.”

Motion said he was pleased with the fourth-place finish from Highland Chief in the 10-furlong Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Manhattan on June 11 here, which came on the heels of an upset score in the 11-furlong Grade 1 Man o' War on May 14.

He said the 5-year-old Gleneagles horse will target the 12-furlong Grade 1, $750,000 Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer on August 27 at Saratoga which offers a “Win and You're In” berth to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf in November at Keeneland.

“He ran a good race. I was a little concerned running him back in a month, but I didn't have a better option and I thought he was doing well,” Motion sad. “He had a license to regress after such a big race in the Man o' War. I'll point him to the Sword Dancer and find one race to get him there. I think that horse will appreciate a little more distance over here. I think a mile and a quarter is a little quick for him.”

Motion said True Valour, a pacesetting third in the Grade 1 Jaipur sprinting six-furlongs over the Belmont turf on June 11, will return at Saratoga with an eye towards the Grade 3, $300,000 Troy going 5 1/2-furlongs on August 5.

The 8-year-old multiple graded-stakes winning son of Kodiac garnered a 99 Beyer for the one-length loss to defending champion Casa Creed.

“I love that horse. For an 8-year-old to come out running like that at his age [was impressive],” Motion said, noting it reminded him of the 8-year-old Nature Strip, who captured the Group 1 Kings Stand at Ascot. “These sprinters seem to get better and better with age. He came out of it great and we'll point for the race at Saratoga.”

Motion said Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Long Valley Stables' Divine Huntress has enjoyed a little down time after her runner-up effort to Matareya in the Grade 1 Acorn on Belmont Stakes Day.

The sophomore daughter of Divining Rod was purchased privately from a maiden win in December at Parx and followed with an optional-claiming score there in January before fading to ninth in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra at 1 1/16-miles in February at Fair Grounds.

Divine Huntress was an even fifth in the nine-furlong Grade 3 Gazelle in April ahead of a fourth-place finish in the nine-furlong Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan in May at Pimlico.

Motion said the cut back to one-mile in the Acorn may have suited the talented bay.

“Each time we run her we've learned something about her,” Motion said. “I feel she had excuses in New Orleans and when we came to Aqueduct she probably benefited from the race. I thought her Black-Eyed Susan run was pretty solid. I think the mile suits her.

“She could come to Saratoga, but I ran her back quickly and I don't want to be in a hurry to run her back,” he added. “I've given her a pretty easy couple of weeks here.”

All-Star Cast For Takarazuka Kinen

Hanshin Racecourse is the site of Sunday's fan-voted G1 Takarazuka Kinen over the metric 11-furlong trip, with the winner earning a fees-paid berth in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland Race Course the first weekend of November. And with scarcely an exception, 18 of Japan's best middle-distance horses–with formlines from all over the world–are set to face the starter.

A logical case can be made for perhaps as many as nine runners Sunday afternoon, including reigning Horse of the Year Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}), who looks to bounce back from a lacklustre ninth as the $1.50 (1-2) favourite when making his 4-year-old debut in the G1 Osaka Hai at this venue back in April. In finishing four lengths adrift of the upset-minded Potager (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the Carrot Farm colourbearer was suffering the second defeat of his career, the first coming when pipped by this year's G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic hero Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the 2021 G1 Tokyo Yushun. Blinkers go on and his latest fast work–with the new equipment–made something of a statement.

“His preparation has gone well, and he's probably in better shape than he was for his last race,” said trainer Yuichi Shikato. “He has been more switched on wearing blinkers in training, and running in between two other horses. It was too bad about his last race, so I want to see the real Efforia this time, and hope that he can show what a talented horse he is and give his best showing in the race.”

Leaving votegetter Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) (by a shade less than 3000 votes over Efforia) made all when winning last year's G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) by five lengths and, since finishing fifth to Efforia in the G1 Arima Kinen in December, led throughout to win the G2 Nikkei Sho (2500m) in March and the 3200-metre G1 Tenno Sho (Spring) May 1, where he had the talented G2 Qatar Prix Foy hero Deep Bond (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) some seven lengths behind in second. Titleholder's pint-sized older half-sister Melody Lane (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) is one of three females in Sunday's test.

Two graduates of this year's Dubai World Cup program could make things tough up front for Titleholder. Authority (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) was one of four winners for Christophe Lemaire on Saudi Cup night when leading them a merry chase in the G3 Neom Turf Cup over an extended 10 furlongs and set the pace in the Sheema before being overhauled late by Shahryar and the fast-finishing Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) took his rivals past every pole to annex the G2 Nakayama Kinen (1800m) by 2 1/2 lengths Feb. 27 and most recently shared the spoils with Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Dubai Turf. The 5-year-old is a bit of a question mark at Hanshin and over this distance.

Stay Foolish (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) is another with imposing Middle East form, having accounted for Sonnyboyliston (Ire) (Power {GB}) in the G3 Longines Red Sea Cup in Riyadh in February before repeating the dose–albeit from slightly off the speed–in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan Mar. 26.

Also not without a chance are the consistent Hishi Iguazu (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), second to Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in December's G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup and a running-on fourth in the Osaka Hai; and 2020 Filly Triple Crown heroine Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}), who was a respectable sixth to multiple champion Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune) first off a 15-month absence in last month's G1 Victoria Mile.

Saratoga Purses Boosted By Over $1.6 Million; Maiden Special Weights To Run For $105,000

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced significant increases of more than $1.6 million to its purse schedule for the 2022 summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course, which opens on Thursday, July 14 and continues through Monday, September 5.

The condition book for the Saratoga summer meet is now available online at nyra.com/Saratoga. Physical copies of the condition book will be available in the Belmont Park racing office beginning Wednesday, June 29th.

“We're pleased to be able to offer these purse increases across the middle core of our racing program,” said Frank Gabriel, Jr., NYRA's Senior Vice President of Racing Operations. “We look forward to continuing to support our horsemen at the upcoming Saratoga summer meet. These purse increases should only add to the already competitive racing on offer at the nation's greatest race meet.”

All open two and three-other-than allowance races will see an increase of $15,000 to $120,000 and $125,000, respectively, while a-other-than allowances will be increased by $12,000 to $115,000. Restricted one and two-other than allowances will both see an increase of $5,000 to $95,000 and $100,000, respectively.

$50,000 starter allowances will increase by $8,000 and offer a $70,000 purse while $50,000 claiming races will offer an $80,000 purse, up $8,000 from last year. Additionally, there will be a $6,000 increase for the $40,000 level, a $5,000 increase for the $25,000 level, and a $4,000 boost for both the $32,000 and $20,000 levels. All claiming purses in excess of a 2:1 purse to claiming price ratio are subject New York State Gaming Commission approval.

Open maiden special weight races at Saratoga will enjoy a $5,000 boost, increasing to $105,000. New York-bred maiden special weights will increase by $3,000 to $88,000.

In addition to these purse increases, the NYRA Maiden Allowance Auction Series will return this summer for the fourth year following its launch in 2019. All races in this series are restricted to horses that sold or RNA'd for $50,000 or less at their most recent auction recognized by Equibase, providing an additional incentive and opportunity for owners to compete at Saratoga.

The Maiden Allowance Auction Series races will be offered in the first condition book of the Saratoga meet for purses of $83,000, a $3,000 increase over 2021. The Maiden Allowance Auction Series condition will also include up to $14,442 in New York Breeding Fund open company owners awards for New York-breds finishing first through third in the Maiden Allowance Auction Series.

Pari-mutuel wagering funds the majority of the NYRA purse account, which is awarded to horsemen and, in turn, benefits hundreds of small businesses operating at NYRA tracks and others dependent on the thoroughbred racing industry. Thoroughbred racing in New York State is responsible for 19,000 jobs and more than $3 billion in annual statewide economic impact.

Highlighted by the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers on August 27 and the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 6, the 2022 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course will feature 77 stakes worth $22.6 million in total purses.

Nathaniel Filly Yorkshire Oaks Bound After Hoppings Win

Friday's G3 Jenningsbet Hoppings Fillies S. at Newcastle represented one of the early skirmishes between the Classic generation and the older fillies and mares and it boiled down to a battle between two members of the former category with Poptronic (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) emerging on top of Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Pitched into this by Karl Burke on the back of a five-length novice success over nearly 11 furlongs at Ripon at the start of the month, David and Yvonne Blunt's homebred looked to be doing too much early with Sam James keen to restrain her behind the pace. Keeping enough in reserve for the pursuit of fellow 3-year-old Rogue Millennium in the straight, the 8-1 shot gained the advantage at the furlong pole and stayed on to score by a length.

Poptronic, who was also successful on Wolverhampton's Tapeta over an extended mile in late December, has a big date on her dance card now. “We talked about the Yorkshire Oaks at the Ebor meeting, so I would imagine that will be her target if she was good enough,” Burke said. “She obviously proved herself good enough today to have a go at it. They went pretty steady early, but we didn't really want to make it with her. She is a bit keen, but Sam said she looks a bit keener than she actually is. He said she wasn't too bad, but swings her head around a little bit. It was a great performance and she is obviously a filly on the up.”

The dam Alpine Dream (Ire) (Dream Ahead), a daughter of the G2 Lowther S. winner Infamous Angel (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) connected to the G3 Hotham S. runner-up Mankayan (Ire) (Intello {Ger}). Her unraced 2-year-old filly is by Brazen Beau (Aus).
