Well-Bred Uncle Mo Filly Romps to ‘Rising Stardom’

It looks like legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who won the GI Kentucky Oaks this year with Secret Oath (Arrogate), may have another star filly in the making in his barn. The Hall of Famer saddled well-bred juvenile filly Summer Promise (Uncle Mo) to an impressive debut win at Churchill Downs Saturday.

Dispatched as the second choice at 3-1, the $500,000 KEESEP was away well from her rail draw and seized the early advantage as heavy favorite Key of Life (Mo Town) missed the break, trailing the field early. Summer Promise coasted through a :22.95 first quarter with a 28-1shot Danse Macabre (Army Mule) sitting on her flank. Turning for home full of run, the bay rolled home to an effortless five-length victory. Danse Macabre held second and Key of Life rallied for third.

Summer Promise is the 11th 'TDN Rising Star' for her sire Uncle Mo. Her blue hen dam Dream of Summer captured the GI Apple Blossom H. and made nearly $1.2 million before proving to be just as talented in the breeding shed. She is the dam of Grade I-winning sire Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway); Grade I winner Vexatious (Giant's Causeway); and MGSW & GISP stallion Destin (Giant's Causeway).

Galileo’s Aikhal Surges To International Success

Aidan O'Brien trainee Aikhal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Diamond Fields {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who ran fourth in last term's G3 Autumn S. and G1 Criterium International, came back off a 234-day sabbatical to finish last of 11 in this month's G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot and bounced back in style to register a career high in Saturday's G3 ARM Holding International S. on the G1 Irish Derby undercard. Stalking the pace in second until sent to the fore approaching the quarter-mile pole, the 20-1 chance quickened in style to poach a decisive advantage entering the final furlong and was ridden further clear in the closing stages to easily dismiss G3 Eyrefield S. winner and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas fifth Duke de Sessa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Fr}) by an impressive 4 1/4 lengths.

“We thought this was a very good horse last year, but he got a hold up in the spring and he went to the [G1] St James's Palace without a run which is certainly not ideal,” the winning trainer revealed. “It was a slow pace [at Royal Ascot] and then they quickened and left him. Ryan [Moore] said maybe we ran the wrong horse in the [G1 Irish] Derby when he got off him. They went a strong gallop and Ryan couldn't believe how well he was going. He ran right through the line.” Moore added, “He's a lovely, little horse and has done that very well. He was off a long time and went straight into the St James's Palace. He stepped up to a mile-and-a-quarter today and got the trip very well. You'd be delighted with what he has done there and he has beaten some real solid older horses. He won well and they weren't getting anywhere near him. Hopefully, he has got a bright future from here.”

Aikhal, kin to a 2-year-old filly by Frankel (GB) and a yearling colt by Kingman (GB), is the first of three foals produced by G3 Gladness S. victrix Diamond Fields (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who is a half-sister to G1 Irish Derby hero Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and stakes-winning G1 Investec Oaks, G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Pretty Polly S. placegetter Pink Dogwood (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). The March-foaled bay's second dam, Listed Bosra Sham Fillies' S. runner-up Question Times (GB) (Shamardal), is a half-sister to G3 Sceptre S. victrix and G1 Cheveley Park S. second Sunday Times (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), herself the dam of stakes-winning G3 Chipchase S. third Classical Times (GB) (Lawman {Fr}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and GI Just A Game S. heroine Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

AAEP Publishes Nocardioform Placentitis Guidelines

Equine veterinarians can help protect their clients' broodmares and unborn foals from nocardioform placentitis (NP) with new disease guidelines published by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. The AAEP's Nocardioform Placentitis Guidelines present the clinical features, risk factors, treatment, control measures and more for a form of bacterial placentitis that can cause abortion, stillbirth, or delivery of a weak premature or term foal.

NP was first diagnosed in central Kentucky in the mid-1980s, and its occurrence since has varied from sporadic cases to outbreak years in the region. Outside of Kentucky and the United States, NP has been reported primarily as isolated cases and rarely as outbreaks. The suggested window from exposure to clinical signs is generally three to five months. In addition, there is a strong association between weather conditions during mid- to late-pregnancy and increased occurrence of NP, specifically exposure to low rainfall and high temperatures during August and September in central Kentucky.

“The insidious nature of NP makes the early diagnosis and onset of treatment rather challenging in clinical practice,” said guidelines co-author Dr. Igor Canisso, Associate Professor of Theriogenology at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

Attempts to create experimental NP infection have been unsuccessful, limiting evidence-based assessment of therapy efficacy. Currently, mares suspected to have NP based on ultrasonographic lesions are usually empirically treated with antibiotics (e.g., sulfa, doxycycline, or gentamicin), anti-inflammatories (flunixin or firocoxib), steroids (altrenogest and/or estrogens) and supporting medications (pentoxifylline and vitamin E).

Dr. Canisso co-authored the Nocardioform Placentitis Guidelines with Dr. Maria Schnobrich, shareholder and theriogenologist at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital; Dr. Carleigh Fedorka, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Kentucky's Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center; and Dr. Barry Ball, who recently retired as the Albert G. Clay Endowed Chair and Professor in Equine Reproduction at the University of Kentucky's Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center.

View the Nocardioform Placentitis Guidelines or save them to your mobile device as a PDF file here. Besides Nocardioform Placentitis, AAEP guidelines for 23 additional equine infectious diseases can be found here.

‘He’s A Monster Of A Horse’: Westover Storms To Irish Derby Victory

Juddmonte homebred Westover emphatically rebounded from his unlucky third in the Cazoo Epsom Derby (G1) earlier this month when he cruised unchallenged to a dominating victory in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1) Saturday at The Curragh.

Westover, quick from the start, dueled for command early before settling to track pacesetter French Claim from second throughout, then drew even to challenge that rival with three furlongs to run. Eagerly responding on cue from jockey Colin Keane, the Frankel colt unleashed a strong rally in the straight and soon went clear, stamping his superiority as he drew away inside the final furlong to post a seven-length triumph.

Trained in England by Ralph Beckett, Westover covered 1 ½ miles in 2:34.80 on turf rated as good. He returned $4.80 in North American pools.

Aidan O'Brien-trained Piz Badile atoned for his 12th at Epsom by finishing best of the rest Saturday, overtaking French Claim a furlong out but could not catch the winner.

French Claim held on to finish third, another two lengths back, in the field of eight 3-year-olds, and Irish Oaks (G1) victress Tuesday, whom O'Brien supplemented to the Irish Derby Tuesday, rallied to finish fourth after racing toward the back of the field.

“I was (a bit keen for a furlong) but once he got in behind one, he gave me a beautiful ride,” Keane told England's Press Association. “He's a monster of a horse, so he is only going to be a better horse next year.”

Beckett said he also expects Westover will get better with age.

“It's important that you go out with your boots on in these occasions and Colin certainly did that today. I really didn't think he would win like that at this stage. He's a big horse and still a work in progress.

“I never felt he was going to stop when he got into his stride. He drifted out a bit into the middle of the track and is still, as I say, a work in progress. I hope there is more to come with him. He has a great temperament and that shone through today.

“This was always a race that would fit in well. The track suits him and it's wonderful to get it done. It's a big day for us.”

Westover won the bet365 Classic Trial (G3) at Sandown on April 22 in his season debut and to the Epsom Derby, where he had traffic trouble in the straight with Rob Hornby aboard. He has a 3-2-1 record from six career starts.

Westover is Juddmonte's 30th homebred classic winner and second Irish Derby winner following Commander in Chief in 1993. He was produced by the Lear Fan mare Mirabilis, who won the 2006 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (G3) for trainer Bobby Frankel and finished second in the 2005 Prix de la Foret (G1) at Longchamp. His is a full brother to Monarchs Glen, a stakes winner this year at Royal Ascot.
