Wow Whata Summer Springs $168.60 Penn Mile Surprise
Benefitting from a savvy mid-race move to the lead by jockey Tyler Conner, Jeremy Brooks' homebred Wow Whata Summer posted an 83-1 upset over odds-on favorite Annapolis in Friday's Grade 2, $400,000 Penn Mile Stakes at Penn National racecourse in Grantville, Pa.
Trained by James Lawrence II, Wow Whata Summer – a 3-year-old by the War Front stallion Summer Front – paid a whopping $168.60 on a $2 wager after covering one mile on soft turf in 1:42.39. Annapolis, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., finished second as the 1-2 favorite, beaten 1 1/4 lengths, with Uncaptured and Angel Suarez third in the field of eight 3-year-olds. Completing the order of finish were Red Danger, Fort Washington, Ohtwoohthreefive, Witty and Noneedtoworry.
The Penn Mile was one of six stakes offering $950,000 on the 11-race card at Penn National, and Wow Whata Summer gave Conner the second of three stakes wins on the night. The leading rider at the current meet teamed with Erin McClellan-trained Maldives Model to win the first stakes of the program, the $100,000 Lyphard Stakes, then completed his triple aboard Nimitz Class for trainer Bruce Kravets in the Danzig Stakes. Both Maldives Model and Nimitz Class are owned by Tom Coulter.
The other three stakes went to Joseph Imbesi's odds-on favorite Buy Land and See for trainer Anthony Dutrow and jockey Flavien Prat in the With Anticipation; Chad Brown-trained, Prat-ridden Haughty, the odds-on favorite in the Penn Oaks for a partnership of Bradley Thoroughbreds, Belmar Racing and Breeding LLC, Tim Cambron, Anna Cambron, and Team Hanley; and Joseph Besecker's 7-5 favorite Bazinga, trained by Timothy Kreiser and ridden by Horacio Karamanos, in the New Start Stakes.
Conner hugged the rail throughout the Penn Mile after breaking from the two post. He settled into fourth early as Uncaptured Spirit set fractions of :24.08 for the opening quarter mile and :49.50 for the half. Moving boldly along the rail to take on the front-runner in the run down the backstretch, Conner and Wow Whata Summer seized command before hitting the far turn and held a 1 1/2-length advantage with a quarter of a mile to go after six furlongs in 1:14.43.
Annapolis and Ortiz raced to the outside of Uncaptured Spirit in third position for much of the way, but had too much to do after Wow Whata Summer took over the lead and cruised to the wire without ever being seriously challenged.
The victory was the second in seven starts for Wow Whata Summer, whose only previous victory came via disqualification in his career debut at Colonial Downs last July 20. He's been stakes placed since then, and was third in his only 2022 start, an allowance race sprint at Laurel on April 23.

Summer Front’s Wow Whata Summer Upsets Penn Mile
Wow Whata Summer sprung the second biggest upset of the year so far when he crossed the finish line in front for the first time, besting previously undefeated 'TDN Rising Star' Annapolis at odds of 83-1 in the GII Penn Mile S. Uncaptured Spirit (Uncaptured) hustled up to take immediate control with heavily favored Annapolis dueling another foe two lengths back in second and Wow Whata Summer engaged in a three-battle off their heels. Wow Whata Summer moved up inside the chalk as the first quarter went up in :24.08 as the pacesetter continued to enjoy a comfortable lead.
An overeager Wow Whata Summer tugged his way up to pressure the leader, sticking his nose in front as the half went in :49.50 as Annapolis continued to bide his time. Wow Whata Summer kicked clear turning for home as Irad Ortiz began to call upon the favorite. Annapolis bore out a bit in early stretch, giving up some ground, but Ortiz quickly righted the ship and sent his mount after the longshot leader, but Wow Whata Summer kept on finding, holding Annapolis at bay by 1 1/4 lengths.
Placed first via DQ in his unveiling at Colonial in July, Wow Whata Summer checked in third in the Hickory Tree S. there a month later and was fourth in that venue's Kitten's Joy S. four weeks after that. Checking in fourth again in the Laurel Futurity S. Oct. 2, he was a soundly beaten ninth when trying dirt in a Laurel optional claimer Nov. 21. Returning to the grass in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance at Laurel Apr. 23, the dark bay rallied from well back to be third behind the re-opposing Uncaptured Spirit.

Wow Whata Summer is the fourth graded winner for his young sire Summer Front. His dam Loan Guarantee is a half to SW Strong Incentive (Warrior's Reward), who is the dam of SW & MGSP Highly Motivated (Into Mischief), who captured a Belmont allowance over Memorial Day weekend. Loan Guarantee is also responsible for a 2-year-old filly named Cherished Wish (Mshawish) and a yearling colt named Wow Whata Party (Desert Party).

Haughty Dusts Rivals in Penn Oaks
Having been scratched from the GIII Soaring Softly S. last weekend, 'TDN Rising Star' HAUGHTY (f, 3, Empire Maker–Soaring Emotions, by Kingmambo) was re-routed for Friday's $150,000 Penn Oaks at Penn National and may have been a touch ring-rusty, but proved far too classy for her four overmatched rivals. A bit hesitant to load and on edge waiting for the gates to spring, the 2-5 chalk was tugging for her head as they raced under the wire with a circuit of the soft-rated turf course to travel as 60-1 outsider and turf debutante Irie Empress (Shackleford) went along at a snail's pace. Flavien Prat had the favored settled better entering the turn and cut the ribbons approaching the quarter pole, and though she drifted wide into the stretch and took enough time to gather in the front-runner, Haughty never felt the stick and waltzed under the line the handiest of winners. Somewhat controversially disqualified and placed third from an apparent debut victory at Belmont last September, the $70,000 Keeneland September buyback turned $310,000 OBS April breezer earned the 'Rising Star' designation on the strength of a four-length romp at Keeneland the following month. Despite a 16-day turnaround and some uncertainty as to whether she would make the race, Haughty gave an outstanding account of herself in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf when third and beaten three-parts of a length.
