Boardroom Overhauls Pacesetter Souper Sensational Late To Win Royal North

Boardroom made her turf debut a winning one, taking the $175,000 Royal North Stakes (G2) Saturday at Woodbine.

For the connections of Boardroom, there was a one big question heading into the 6 ½-furlong Royal North: Would the talented five-year-old take to the turf?

The LNJ Foxwoods' mare provided an emphatic answer.

It was Souper Sensational, also making her turf debut, who took the lead, as Jeanie B, second by a nose in last year's running of the race, found herself a head behind the pacesetter. Boardroom, under Rafael Hernandez, was third, with U.S. invader In Good Spirits taking up residence in fourth through an opening quarter timed in :22.42.

Souper Sensational maintained her head advantage over Jeanie B, as Boardroom and In Good Spirits remained third and fourth, respectively, after a half in :44.37.

As the field rounded the turn for home, Souper Sensational was still calling the shots, as multiple stakes winner Boardroom was called upon for her best run.

Third and gaining at the stretch call, Boardroom dug down deep and collared her rival in the late stages, finishing a neck in front of Souper Sensational in a time of 1:13.55 over firm going. La Libertee was third and Gidgetta finished fourth.

Plagued by troubled trips on more than one occasion throughout her career, Boardroom was finally able to call the shots with a smooth journey.

“Josie [trainer, Carroll] told me, 'Raffi, just make sure she breaks good out of the gate.' She's an unbelievable horse. Everything worked good, exactly like Josie told me, and here we are. Even though the pace was fast, she was doing everything easy. She just stretched her legs down the lane.”

Despite having to work overtime for the win, Hernandez had faith the daughter of Commissioner out of Money Madness would be able to seal the deal.

“I know my horse, when I keep asking, she's going to give me the best she can.”

Which is exactly what Carroll has come to expect from her multiple graded stakes winning star.

“The last race, she missed the break,” said the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame conditioner, of the second-place finish in the Grade 3 Whimsical on May 8. “She just didn't get herself into position in time. She was flying on end. She handled the grass really well at Palm Meadows and I was pretty confident she'd like it. I was a little concerned because I knew it would be pretty hard and fast and that was something she hadn't been over. This is just a really good mare. You can't go over there with anything but confidence. She just gives you everything every time.”

Last year, the bay, bred in Kentucky by Polo Green Stable Inc., had an abbreviated campaign.

Carroll lauded LNJ Foxwoods for their handling of Boardroom, who returned $7.70.

“I'm so fortunate that I have owners who are going to do the right thing by the horse. When you take the time and do the right thing by them, they pay you back.”

With the victory, Boardroom now has six wins, two seconds and a third from nine career starts.

Peter Miller Suspended Seven Days, Fined $10,000 For Program Training

Trainer Peter Miller has been suspended seven days and fined $10,000 by California Horse Racing Board stewards for violating the CHRB's rule prohibiting program training. The ruling, issued on Saturday and resulting from a stipulated agreement and mutual release with the CHRB, said Miller violated Rule No. 1502 during a period from Dec. 23, 2021 through March 24, 2022, when he said he was taking a hiatus from training while holding an owner's and stable agent's license.

Miller stepped away from active training last November, citing personal reasons, and transferred most of his stable to former assistant Ruben Alvarado. He took what he called a voluntary hiatus after having five horses in his stable die and receiving three sanctions for phenylbutazone overages.

A May 23 complaint against Miller and Alvarado said that Miller “has engaged in behavior consistent with the duties of a trainer at the San Luis Rey training center … including entering horses, conducting endoscopy exams, giving instruction to riders, examining horses, consulting with veterinarians, controlling and accessing bank accounts purported to belong to Ruben Alvarado Racing Stables, assigning jockeys and creating training charts.”

Miller had one starter race in his name in 2022, Respect the Code, who finished eighth in an allowance race at Churchill Downs on May 29. He said at the time that he would be returning to training in Southern California for the upcoming Los Alamitos and Del Mar meets and planned to race at Santa Anita following the conclusion of those meets.

The suspension, which runs from June 6 through June 12, precludes Miller from having access to all premises under CHRB jurisdiction. Regulatory rulings of this type are reciprocated in other racing states.

Emmanuel Romps Gate To Wire In Pennine Ridge In Turf Debut

Emmanuel made his turf debut a winning one in Saturday's $200,000 Pennine Ridge (G2) a nine-furlong inner turf test for sophomores, at Belmont Park.

Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher and perfectly handled by Irad Ortiz Jr., Emmanuel, the 9-5 mutuel favorite, led the compact field of six through moderate splits of :25.19, :51.72, and 1:15.91 over the firm inner turf.

The Chad Brown-trained duo of Unanimous Consent and Napoleonic War launched their bids through the final turn with Elizar attempting to advance along the rail. But Emmanuel continued to find more as the field straightened away, powering home to a one-length score in a final time of 1:51.11.

Pletcher said he was pleased with the turf debut for the talented bay, who breezed twice over the Belmont turf in advance of the Pennine Ridge.

“He's bred for the turf, but he's always trained really well on the dirt. He's had some good dirt races, but we kind of wanted to experiment with this,” Pletcher said. “My biggest concern was two weeks ago we worked him and it had a little give to it like it does today, and I didn't think he was as good as he was the following work when it was firm. It looked like we had a pace advantage and took advantage of that and he ran well.”

Ortiz, who won four races on the card, said he took advantage of Emmanuel's early foot.

“He was the speed of the race. He broke well and put me in a good position. I just kept it together and stayed out of his way,” Ortiz said. “He was ready. He's by More Than Ready, so he had a great pedigree to run on turf. I expected that he would like it and he did like it.”

The Flavien Prat-piloted Napoleonic War completed the exacta by a half-length over the late-running Limited Liability with the top-three finishers earning an automatic berth into the 10-furlong $1 million Caesars Belmont Derby Invitational (G1) on July 9, the first leg of the Caesars Turf Triple series for sophomores.

Unanimous Consent, Daunt, and Elizar rounded out the order of finish. Main-track only entrant Gilded Age was scratched.

Pletcher, who watched his Dynamic One capture the $200,000 Blame at Churchill Downs just moments after Emmanuel's win photo, said he'd like to continue on to the Belmont Derby with the versatile colt, who will now look to follow in the footsteps of Oscar Performance [2017] and Catholic Boy [2018], who parlayed Pennine Ridge wins to Belmont Derby success.

“That's what we're thinking. We'll see how he comes out,” Pletcher said. “We haven't ruled out going back to the dirt at some point. All our options are open.”

By More Than Ready and out of the Hard Spun mare Hard Cloth, Emmanuel made his first four career starts on dirt, graduating at first asking in December at Gulfstream Park and following with a sharp optional-claiming score in January at Tampa Bay Downs.

Emmanuel then tried his luck on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, finishing fourth in the Fountain of Youth (G2) in March at Gulfstream ahead of a pacesetting third in the Blue Grass (G1) in April at Keeneland.

Bred in Kentucky by Helen K. Groves Revocable Trust, Emmanuel banked $110,000 in victory while improving his record to 5-3-0-1. He returned $5.80.
