Cyberknife Can ‘Get Some Of His Confidence Back’ In Sunday’s Matt Winn

Gold Square's Grade 1-winning colt Cyberknife headlines a field of seven 3-year-olds that were entered in Sunday's $225,000 Matt Winn Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile Matt Winn will go as Race 8 with a post time of 4:22 p.m. First post is 12:45 p.m.

The Matt Winn annually serves as the next stop for many horses after the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). Cyberknife, trained by Brad Cox, finished 18th in the Kentucky Derby under jockey Florent Geroux.

“In the Derby the pace was very fast and something he may never have to experience again,” Geroux said. “I think the Matt Winn is a good spot for him to get some of his confidence back. He's been doing well out of the Derby and should have a better pace setup in this race than he had to deal with in the Derby.”

Cyberknife, who won the $1.25 million Arkansas Derby (G1) in his final prep toward the Kentucky Derby, has never won at Churchill Downs but has been based beneath the Twin Spires for most of his career. The son of Gun Runner finished second twice at Churchill as a 2-year-old before he broke his maiden at Fair Grounds. Following the Kentucky Derby, Cyberknife has recorded three published works prior to the Matt Winn. Geroux will once again be aboard for Sunday's race and break from post No. 6.

Here's the field for the Matt Winn from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Trafalgar (Colby Hernandez, Al Stall Jr.)
  2. Tough to Tame (Jose Lopez, Chris Davis)
  3. Camp David (Tyler Gaffalione, Rodolphe Brisset)
  4. Howling Time (Joe Talamo, Dale Romans)
  5. Droppin G's (Rafael Bejarano, Jerry Antonuik)
  6. Cyberknife (Geroux, Cox)
  7. Rattle N Roll (Brian Hernandez Jr., Kenny McPeek)

Dark Angel’s Dr Zempf Back To Winning Ways

Disappointing when only fifth trying a mile in The Curragh's Listed Tetrarch S. May 2, Peter Brant's TDN Rising Star Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was back in his comfort zone in Thursday's G3 Ballycorus S. as he successfully returned to the seven-furlong trip and Leopardstown venue of his Apr. 2 Listed 2000 Guineas Trial S. win. In front initially before handed a lead by the eventual third Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}), the 13-8 favourite who was also runner-up in the G1 Phoenix S. in August blew by that rival with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and gave generously for Colin Keane to score by two lengths from fellow Ger Lyons-trained TDN Rising Star Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}).

“I never had a doubt that he would get a mile and I was wrong,” Lyons admitted. “Colin said that he is strengthening up all the time. He shows me plenty of speed at home and we could bring him back to six, but Colin said don't do that. I'd say his future will be in America for Peter and I'd say that is where he will win his grade 1 around two bends. That was a lovely run from Straight Answer. Rory and Barry [Mahon] are adamant that the pedigree suggests he goes further. [Jockey] Gary [Carroll] said he'll win one of those over a mile.”

Dr Zempf is the third foal out of the G3 Prix Eclipse and Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge winner and G3 Prix d'Arenberg third Souvenir Delondres (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Her first was Dancin Inthestreet (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), who was third in the 2020 Palace of Holyroodhouse H. at Royal Ascot. She is a half to the Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S.-placed I'm So Glad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}) connected to the dual listed scorer and G3 Prix de Seine-et-Oise runner-up Terroir (Ire) (Fairy King) and the GII Schuylerville S. and GIII Astoria Breeders' Cup S. winner Distinct Habit (Distinctive Pro). Souvenir Delondres's 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB) is named Visiting Hours (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB).

Grand Glory Supplemented To The Prince Of Wales’s S.

Group 1 winner Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) was supplemented to the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. for £70,000 on Wednesday. A winner of the G1 Prix Jean Romanet for owners Albert Frassetto, John D'Amato and Mike Pietrangelo last August, the bay was knocked down for €2.5 million at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale. She is riding a two-race winning streak in her new colours of Haras de Hus after victories in the Listed Prix Zarkava and the G3 Prix Allez France in April and May, respectively. She faces seven others in the contest, including Sir Michael Stoute's Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}), the winner of the G3 Brigadier Gerard S., as well as G1 Sheema Classic hero Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) for Japan and multiple Group 1 winner Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for John and Thady Gosden.
