The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Where Are All The Horses?

The Triple Crown comes to a close with Saturday's Belmont Stakes, the culmination of a three-day racing festival at Belmont Park offering stakes for virtually every division of Thoroughbreds on both dirt and turf at the Elmont, N.Y., track. And while most of the best horses in training are participating, many of the races wound up with small fields: four starters in Friday's Bed o' Roses; five each in Saturday's Acorn, Just A Game, Ogden Phipps and Met Mile, and six in the Woody Stephens. All are grade 1 events with the exception of the G2 Bed o' Roses.

In this week's Friday Show, Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills discuss what's contributing to the field size crisis, including the disconnect between the shrinking foal crop (minus 45 percent since 2008) and the number of American Graded Stakes scheduled in 2022 (only 7 percent fewer than in 2008).

What will it take for the alarming downward trend in field size to be reversed, in light of the lack of cooperation among racetracks and the absence of leadership in industry organizations to address the issue?

Overanalyze’s Two of a Kind Holds ‘Em All in Tremont

Two of a Kind remained unbeaten in two starts with a game front-running score in the Tremont S. Thursday at Belmont.

Unveiled at over 7-1 May 4 at Churchill, the Brian Lynch trainee popped out to the front from the rail and widened in the lane for a 3 3/4-length score. Made a narrow 2-1 favorite Thursday, the bay wasn't quite swiftest out of the gate, but overtook longshot Putthepastbehind in the opening furlong. Clicking off a :22.40 quarter while lightly pressed by Zelenskyy Strong (Uncaptured) on the turn, he discarded that rival nearing the lane, but faced a fresh challenge from No Nay Hudson (Ire) (No Nay Never). Two of a Kind continued to find down the stretch though, turning back that rival and a resurgent Putthepastbehind.

“He's always been a precocious sort of colt. He's physically very mature and mentally he's mature,” said trainer Brian Lynch. “We can't be anything but happy with these last couple performances, the one at Churchill and the one today.”

Wanamaker’s To Host Pre-Saratoga New York-Bred Racing Age Sale

The New York Thoroughbred Breeders' Inc. is partnering with the online Thoroughbred auction company Wanamaker's to provide a New York-bred horses of racing age sale in advance of the 2022 Saratoga Race Course meeting.

Horses will sell Wednesday, July 13, the day before the 40-day Saratoga meet begins and the last opportunity for buyers to purchase a New York-bred at auction ahead of Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Select and Preferred Yearling Sales in August. Entries for the sale will close July 5 and the catalogue will be released the following day.

“This is a remarkable opportunity to get immediately involved in the New York-bred program ahead of the lucrative Saratoga Race Course meet,” said NYTB Executive Director Najja Thompson.

“Partnering with Wanamaker's and their innovative online auction format makes it easily accessible to participate in our program with breeder awards up to 30 percent, Open Owner Awards up to 20 percent and programs including the NYRA Maiden Allowance Auction Series and New York-Sired bonus program. Now is the perfect time to invest in New York-breds.”

The entry fee for the auction will be $300 and commissions will be five percent on sales and zero percent on RNAs.

The NYTB partnered with Wanamaker's for its annual stallion season auction in January. The auction raised funds for the NYTB to continue fulfilling its mission to promote New York breeding and racing and protecting the welfare of industry stakeholders. A portion of the proceeds from seasons sold for Kentucky stallions was donated to the Foundation of Appalachian Kentucky to aid the relief and recovery efforts of those impacted by tornadoes in the region in late 2021.

Wanamaker's was founded two years ago and offers buyers and sellers a consistent year-round marketplace with monthly online auctions.

Got It Made Tops Fasig-Tipton June Digital Selected Sale

The Fasig-Tipton June Digital Selected Sale closed Thursday afternoon with six offerings sold. Among those sold were racing prospects, broodmare prospects, and in-foal mares. Bidding initially opened on Monday, June 6.

Got It Made (Hip 6), offered in foal for 2023 to current leading third-crop sire Not This Time, sold for $145,000 to Anderson Farms to top the sale.

Consigned by Rosilyn Polan (Sunday Morning Farm), the 5-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo is a half-sister to three winners out of Seaside Escape, a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner and Grade 1 producer Cavorting. Got It Made hails from the immediate family of last year's Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner Rattle N Roll. Her first foal is a yearling filly by Demarchelier (GB). She was not bred for 2022.

Buyers may still make offers on horses that failed to meet their reserve by visiting the sale page and then clicking “Make Offer” next to the horse they are interested in purchasing.

Offers are currently being accepted on the 2-year-old half-sister to undefeated Grade 1 winner and multiple graded stakes winner Jack Christopher, recent $90,000 maiden special weight winner Bali Dreamin, and mares in foal to Independence Hall, Maclean's Music, Mo Town, Silver State, and Yaupon.

Dates for the next digital sale, which will take place in August, will be announced in the coming weeks. Selected horses of racing age and breeding stock will be offered on-site in Lexington, Ky., on July 11 at the July Selected Horses of All Ages sale.
